There are a lot of good books on the theme of a captain just joining a ship. Many times the captain is the main POV and he or she has to motivate the crew. Sometimes this is the first time the officer is a captain, sometimes he or she has been captain of other ships. And I’m sure there are a few books where the POV is not the captain, who may be a complete stinker.

Two that come to mind are Auberon by Blaze Ward which we read in March 2018, and Hunting Party by Elizabeth Moon which is the first book of the Heris Serrano trilogy. (I’m not seeing Hunting Party on the bookshelf, how odd....)
