I believe I am caught up to this point. Thanks for all the adds!

Shirley (stampartiste) | 43 comments I recently added these three books to my TBR shelf. They were written by Miklós Bánffy and take place in Hungary:

They Were Counted (1934), They Were Found Wanting (1937) and They Were Divided (1940).

Sara I am continually impressed by how well-read you are! I wasted too many years on junk-food-for-the-brain mysteries and my legal studies!

Pillsonista | 30 comments Kelly wrote: "Sara I am continually impressed by how well-read you are! I wasted too many years on junk-food-for-the-brain mysteries and my legal studies!"

I would hardly call legal studies, of any kind, a waste Kelly! ;-)

And honestly, I truly do not believe one kind of reading is superior to another, so long as it is done for love and enjoyment. If those "junk-food-for-the-brain" mysteries, as you call them, brought you pleasure, then I don't believe that there was a difference in our reading.

But as for what I read, again, all credit has to go to my father. For him, reading was interconnected to experience. While the former is never a substitute for the latter, reading allows one to get close to experiences that we may never actually have the opportunity to enjoy in life. That's why he always encouraged my reading to be as eclectic as possible: the more eclectic the reading, the more eclectic the (potential) experiences. The imagination can never have too many avenues or outlets.

It's almost like, for my dad, a new book was like meeting a new person. And just as you can never meet too many people, so you can never read too many books!

Your dad sounds wonderful. Nobody in my family reads. They all saw/see me as a bit of an oddball. Reading is not something they encouraged. They wanted me to be more "normal". LOL. The reading paid off in law school.

I do wish that I had made the choice to expand my horizons 20 or 30 years ago though.

Those 3 hours were very productive, because you came up with a great list, Celia!

And another addition to the United Kingdom:

Anglo-Saxon Attitudes by Angus Wilson.

Have you read it, Luís? I'd love to know your opinion.

I desperately want to, but I'm afraid it might actually effect how I think about Pessoa, whom I all but worship (adoration is a small word to describe my love for Fernando Pessoa).

Do you want this one by Frances Goodrich or the diary published in Anne's name?
