Okay so I’m looking for a book but what I remember from it is pretty vague. I read it between the years 2009 and 2011 and it was a young adult ish fantasy book for people between maybe 11-16.
The first couple pages was a list of different things saying what they were (fairies and brownies and such) I remember this because I remember thinking it was odd to have a creature called a brownie. I remember in the beginning, there was a boy who I think was with his parents fell over something and ended up in another world. I remember he was attacked by something that made him laugh, that was how the animal/person? attacked. I remember there was a girl fairy who was also a main character and I think she had family problems. A crappy sister or a dying/dead Mom or something. (Sorry if this is posted twice I tried before and it didn’t work and I don’t really know what I’m doing)

I'm fairly certain that this is The Divide by Elizabeth Kay. It sounds exactly like it and it's one of my favourite series. In it, the boy has lots of medical conditions and he's in the rainforest at the beginning?
