I just finished it and found it disjointed but imaginative. It is very dark, so much so that I would consider it a nega-Potter!

Andrea | 455 comments For this task, I read Vita Nostra by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko. It takes place in a fictional university called the Institute of Special Technologies, and the main character, Sasha, is a student. It also features other students and teachers prominently.

Stacey D. | 1908 comments What are you reading this week? The Rebel Angels by Robertson Davies

Where is it set, and is it a real school/university or a fictional one? It's set in a fictional university called College of St. John and Holy Ghost, presumably in Canada. Many believe it's based on Toronto's Trinity College.

Are the main characters teachers or students? Both. The novel's narration shifts mainly between the points of view of a professor and a grad student.

Fictional. It is set at Osthorne, a high school for people who are able to do magic.

The book is told from the perspective of Ivy, a PI who is investigating a murder at the school. The rest of the characters are either students or teachers at the school.

I wound up going with Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey

- Where is it set, and is it a real school/university or a fictional one?
It's set at the fictional Osthorne Academy for young mages.

- Are the main characters teachers or students?
The POV character is actually a private investigator who has come to the school to find out who killed one of the teachers. The rest of the characters are a mix of teachers and students.

I read Educated for this week. In true Mid-Western American passiveness, I'll say this was an "interesting" book. Not really my cup of whiskey but I can see how many enjoy this book.

Students.

Gaudy Night

- Where is it set, and is it a real school/university or a fictional one?
It's set in a real university (Oxford), but a fictional college within it.

- Are the main characters teachers or students?
It's more focused on the teachers, but the main character is actually an alumni (or Senior Member, as they say it).

This was a re-read from my teens, and it was a very pleasant comfort read, but also interesting to pick up on some of the nuances that went over my head as a teen, about women's education and related issues.

Marie | 1049 comments I read Tricky Twenty-Two by Janet Evanovich.

It's set on and around the campus of the fictional Kiltman College in New Jersey. The main character isn't a teacher or student, she's a bounty hunter trying to catch a student who has jumped bail.

I ended up reading Chemistry by Weike Wang, which was probably not the best choice for the prompt, but I'm going with it. It's set in a university (it may have mentioned which one, but I forgot), except she quits working on her Ph.D. in like the first 20 pages or so.

So.... it really isn't set in the university much. But then she starts tutoring, so she's sort of a teacher, and I'm just going to count it anyway.

But for you literalists, this book would be great for the STEM prompt... just not so much for this one.

Are the main characters teachers or students? A student falls in love with a succubus-like vampire so her best friend has to safe her. It was silly, and not in a good way.

Cendaquenta | 207 comments What are you reading this week?
I just finished Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones.

Where is it set, and is it a real school/university or a fictional one?
It's set in a village on Bougainville Island, part of Papua New Guinea. I believe the village, characters, etc. are all fictional though set against the backdrop of real events. It's a pretty makeshift school - just one guy reading to any kids that will come - but a fair portion of the book is set in the schoolhouse building, so I'd say it counts.

Are the main characters teachers or students?
It's told through one protagonist, 13-yr-old Matilda, who is a student, although the teacher, Mr. Watts, is the next most prominent character.

- What are you reading this week? The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead
- Where is it set, and is it a real school/university or a fictional one? It takes place at a reform school/prison and is based on a real reform school in Florida that sounds like hell on earth- after it was closed hundreds of bodies were found on the campus. Really really horrible story.
- Are the main characters teachers or students? Students with the teachers the torturers.

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 452 comments What are you reading this week? On Beauty, by Zadie Smith
Where is it set, and is it a real school/university or a fictional one? Wellington college, in New England. Google says this is not a real place.
Are the main characters teachers or students? Both and neither, really. The Belsey family are the central characters, and are lecturer (father), student (daughter) and other (sons and mother).

I pretty much missed the Zadie Smith boat. My first Smith book I read just two years ago, and I'm not sure that Swing Time was the best one to start with. On Beauty is in a completely different vein. So many of the previous GR reviews have appraised this book in a far more intelligent way than I can, so I'm not going to even try to discuss the class and racial politics (as well as the, well, politics politics) in this book, except to say that I found Smith's approach fascinating. This is a family drama - of children trying to find themselves in young adulthood and parents whose relationship is straining under the weight of the husband's infidelity - played out in the social and moral context of a university town. The retelling (or homage, I suppose) to Howards End really appealed to me, and I think that elevated this story as there were elements in it that might have tainted things for me without that. Mainly, I struggled with the intellectual college setting. It no doubt says more about my own level of intelligence, or the quality of my university experience, but I can't connect with or even believe in characters who intellectualise to nth degree in even the most common-place discussions. I failed to like a lot of the characters, which did cause me frustration when I just wanted to give quite a few of them a slap, but I didn't really find that a problem. I actually think Smith intended to create that response in the reader, as the characters themselves are so carefully crafted that there could be nothing accidental in making them so flawed. It was really only the mother, Kiki, who I warmed to. I really enjoyed her friendship with the wife of her husband's academic arch rival, and was very moved by the things Kiki faces, such as her changing body and her husband's cheating. I could have read a book just about her, but that probably reflects where I am in my life. This story isn't fast paced or action packed, but it got under my skin and I was curious as to where it would take me. I liked where it did.

A Little Something Different

Where is it set, and is it a real school/university or a fictional one?
It never says, but it sounds like it could be any university anywhere.

Are the main characters teachers or students?
Main characters are students with a lot of supporting characters, both at the university and around town.

This was such a feel-good story! I, along with everyone in the book was rooting for the main characters to get together. Sometimes you are just the last person to see what is obvious to the rest of the world!
