Well I had that book spoiled for me so I'm glad you get to read it fresh! I ended up just watching the film and I wouldn't count it as a super power.

The title "the girl with all the gifts" is from the myth about Cassandra that Melanie likes. Cassandra was the girl with all the gifts. Melanie is just unusual. I would not say she has superpowers.

Yes, definitely and I highly recommend it!

message 54: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 69 comments Thanks all. I guess I'll just read it and see and find a new book if it's too much of a stretch.

I wondered this as I've recently got the book. I've read a little bit more on the internet and the girl is the only one immune to a deadly toxic fungi invading the planet. She's being experimented on to try and make others immune too. It's possibly a little bit of a stretch but it sounds interesting and different so I've decided to read it anyway :)

El Deafo doesn't work, but if you are looking for a children's book I highly recommend Savvy.

message 57: by Serendipity (new)

Serendipity | 146 comments If the ability to jump into the world of a book and interact with the characters is a super power (and if it is it's one I'd quite like to have) then I'll probably read The Book Jumper.

message 58: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Would Dorian Grey count?

Kat (kattlovestea) Milena wrote: "Can anyone recommend some superhero graphic novels for a comic/graphic novel beginner? Thank you in advance."
If you have watched any of the marvel movies I recommend this, it is a different take on Hawkeye and is pretty awesome
Hawkeye, Volume 1: My Life as a Weapon

Captain Marvel is one of my favorites, I just finished Captain Marvel #1
If you want to start at the beginning (more or less) Captain Marvel, Volume 1: In Pursuit of Flight

Monstress, Vol. 1: Awakening is another one, not about superheroes, but the main character definitely has super human power

*I forgot hawkeye does not have superpowers :( still worth a read though

OMG! Yes! Love this series.

Not sure if Mortal Instruments (ie: City of Bones would qualify because Shadowhunters are more like warriors with powerful ruins than "supernatural beings" . But this series by Cassandra Clare works well.

message 61: by Marisa (new)

Marisa Molina (molinaml) | 0 comments You.. know all this talk about Cassandra Clare.
I am going to read either The Bane Chronicles or The Red Scrolls of Magic. Thanks guys : )

It's not a superhero one, but I love American Born Chinese. The Monkey King definitely has some super powers.

YES!!! My love for the Fraction/Aja Hawkeye series has no bounds!!! it's one of the best superhero comics ever, IMO. The only reason I didn't mention it here is because Hawkeye does not have super powers. He's just a really good archer. And a serial monogamist. And a dog owner :-)

My thought was that Clary herself has a sort of super power but then again its been ages since I've read the series ( been dying to read it again, I loved it and I think I missed the last book)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 160 comments Multiple times I read the synopsis of a book where something happens to two sisters and one gains the ability to read minds...anyone have any idea what book that is?

You know, her sketching (for those who haven't read it, I'll leave it at that) does start coming into play at the end of book one. So that would makes sense. I stand corrected. But I love all her books so I would tell everyone to read her TMI or TID series.

message 67: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 160 comments I found this list of fantasy book with teens with magical powers (could be super)

message 68: by Lindi (new)

Lindi (lindimarie) I think I'm going to read Charmed: Season 9, Volume 1. The TV show is one of my favorites, and so many of the reviews say it's like watching an episode.

I was struggling if I really counted their powers as superpowers - since they're technically witches and lack the "origin" story of a superhero, but they do routinely use their powers for the greater good so I'm counting it.

message 69: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1752 comments I wouldn't worry about it not being a superhero story, the prompt just says super power.

"Superpower" is also a term used to describe very powerful countries so it can also be interpreted as someone with an awful lot of real world power.

message 70: by Trina (new)

Trina Gloury (mactrin) | 76 comments Ugh, fantasy is not my jam. I know super powers aren't exclusive to that genre, but they are most frequently found there. I will either go with another Harry Potter book or maybe Vicious. People I know who aren't the biggest fans of fantasy really enjoyed Vicious.

message 71: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 186 comments I just added The Book of M to my TBR and it looks like it could work well fo this prompt.

message 72: by Daniele (new)

Daniele Powell (danielepowell) | 5 comments In the non-fiction department, I'm thinking AJ Lee's biography would work without too much of a stretch: Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules

message 73: by SadieReadsAgain (new)

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 767 comments Urgh...I am not loving this one. Would telepathy or immortality count as superpowers? Because I think Touch Not the Cat has telepathy in it, and that How to Stop Time has a character in it that has lived for centuries. Other than those, I got nothing.

message 74: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1752 comments I found this very comprehensive list of super powers, telepathy and immortality are listed. I personally like "literary manipulation" as a superpower!

Yeeeeeeessssssss! I wish I could go back and experience those books again. They're amazing. If you can, I'd get it on audiobook. The other books in the series - Scumble and Switch - are equally wonderful in a way that I don't expect from trilogies. (There's always one that lets me down.)

Marvel 1604 - This is fun, the Marvel heroes are moved to another era (1604, obviously).

I am a beginner and I really enjoyed it.

Ronja (roszanen) | 10 comments Would Palace of Treason work for this one? The heroine has a sort of emotional synesthesia.

Duckoffimreading The Power - all the women in the world develop an electrical power out of their hands. Dystopian, but w women running the world. I liked it!

Marvel 1602 comes highly recommended by me. Some of the fun is seeing how some of your favorite Marvel heroes translate to the 17th century. My favorites were Daredevil and Captain America.

It has a very satisfying ending as well.

Ah, 1602, I was off two years! I have a new and wonderful tradition of reading a nice big stack of graphic novels on Christmas Day - I will add this one to my list for that.

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1301 comments Yes Johanna, the children in the Miss Peregrine books have superpowers. This is a great choice for this prompt (I have read them so I am going with something else).

message 94: by Wendi (new)

Wendi Lee (wendimlee) | 24 comments I read Dreadnought last year and really enjoyed it. Lots of superpowers!

The Biased Bibliophile (thebiasedbibliophile) | 13 comments Renegades (Renegades, #1) by Marissa Meyer Renegades would be absolutely perfect for this prompt! And the third book in the trilogy comes out next year!

I would agree. I've read El Deafo and it stays pretty true to real life events, not really anything superhero-ish

Juliebean (juliebean512) | 145 comments I haven't seen anyone mention this one yet Hero. It's about a teenage boy who is coming out as both gay and with superpowers with a father who can't stand either one. The hero world is interesting - sort of a behind-the-scenes of the Justice League sort of thing, with tryouts and training.
Hero by Perry Moore
