Daniel The book I read was “Homecoming by Yaa Gyasi. The novel consists of stories telling about the life of two half sisters, Effia and Esi, as well as the overall existence of the slave trade that took place in 1700’s-1900’s. It begins in the mid-1700’s in Ghana in an area that was made up of several Akan nation-states. Two of these states where the Fanta and the Asante nations. During this period Ghana was engaged in slave trade practices with the British. The British took advantage of existing system of taking war prisoners as slaves and bought those slaves for use in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The story tells of the two half-sisters contrasting existences during the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade time period. Effia is married to an Englishman and lives comfortably in the Cape Coast Castle. Meanwhile, without Effia even knowing, her half-sister Esi is imprisoned below her in the castle’s dungeon. Esi is sold with hundreds of others and shipped off to America. The novel then tells of Effia’s trials and tribulations dealing with all the warfare in Ghana, while telling of Esi and her children’s trials and tribulations in America. Overall, I did not find this book to be very entertaining. Although I do recognize the sobering reality that it was able to illustrate, it was not a book that I would necessarily recommend unless you are a wild “wild reader".
