2018's BotM theme schedule has helped us read and discuss a greater variety of books this year. Now the IRCB team is working on putting together 2019's theme calendar, and is looking for ideas.

What are your ideas for new month themes?

Were there any themes last year that you'd like to see again?

Your input will be used to help the IRCB team construct the 2019 BotM theme schedule. It will be announced on January 1st.

So many possibilities!

Some ideas I have bouncing around:
-Comic with non-traditional art style
-Comic by small press/self-published
-Graphic novel (not a volume of a series or superhero one-shot)
-All-female creative team
-Volume of a manga
-Eisner winner

I don't know why you don't want people to hear my views. Is it because they don't conform to your authoritarian standards of what diversity should be? You're doing a great disservice to the rest of the members of this group by shutting me up because some of them may agree with me and wish to open up a public dialog about it. I guess diversity is only important when it comes to how dark I am rather than how I think.

In spite of my bias, being on this side of the Atlantic, might I suggest:

a U.K. published title

a European non English language (translated into English of course) title.

There are quite a few series that we have started as a group. How about the next volume in a previously started series?

a writer or artist Debut graphic novel or comic book.

what i mean by this is choosing a comic that is written or drawn by someone who does not have any published comic work before that comic

And let's have some fun too!

- Bad girl comics - who doesn't like them?
- Comic with ultra-violent artwork - horror might go here, but decapitations, dismembering and any form of bloody gore are also welcome
- Extra-terrestrial invasion comics - this one is almost serious
- Something with plenty of love and sex in it, but not quite porn - ok, maybe light porn
- Genetic manipulation or symbiotic relationship - the less moral, the better
- Military strategy/warfare - any place, any age
- Story with a black single lesbian adventurer with firm beliefs in God, a patriotic attitude and SJW tendencies, who has adopted one refugee teen and an abandoned baby after an interdimensional conflict between lizard-like creatures; she must be family-oriented, a romantic at heart, but also strong-willed - if anyone has a recommendation, please let me know

*kids graphic novels/all ages graphic novels. There are some incredible books out there that are 100% reading even if you're over the targeted age range
*Comics that focus on nature rather than people
*Comics that focus on travel?
I'm sure many of these have been done before but there's always good new stuff to find. :)

I love these ideas, too. I figured I’d throw my two cents in.

I really enjoyed the episode about foreign published comics and graphic novels. Maybe it could be fun to come up with a book from a different country each month?

Comics that were originally published as ZINES!

we could also have a free form month where we don't have one book that unites us all but instead a general theme and go with indie comic zines. that way we could share our discoveries and how/where we found them, what we like about the format of zines vs mainstream published comics etc.

(also, I'm fairly sure American Born Chinese actually started as a self-published zine, because I feel like I found a few issues in my library's zine collection, but the internet and I are not friends today, so I can't verify this fact at the moment.)
