Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments ALL ABOUT UNO

This is a 3 month team challenge starting 1 February 2019

At the end of the challenge 30 April 2019 the team with the most points wins!

At the start of each month each team is given a minimum 13 hands of 7 "UNO" cards

The idea is to "play" each hand for points. It is up to the team how many "hands" they can get through in the month, but they must play one hand completely before being able to get points for the next

The team can choose to skip an entire hand to get to the next one, but they are not given a replacement hand. (You can only skip one hand in a month)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Hi everyone and welcome to Team Nick Charles. I'm Alison and I'll be your Captain for this challenge. This is my fifth year playing and third year as a captain so hopefully I should know what I'm doing (I make no guarantees on this). If you have any problems or questions though let me know.

I'll set up some posts at the start of this thread with all of the important stuff later today but in the meantime if you could check in and post a link to your challenge shelf that would be awesome.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Hi Alison & everyone! I'm Lauri from Hawaii checking in! So excited to be here! I can't do a link to save my life and have never been able to utilize the spreadsheet, so I will ask for help frequently... My shelf name is Uno-2019 and this will be my third year playing. I am a serial book starter and read several books simultaneously. I went to the library today to start stocking up.... Can't wait to get started! Please feel free to chat or friend me

Hi Lauri, great to have you on the team. Don't worry about links or spreadsheets, I can add things for you. I know some people love a spreadsheet and others are not so keen :)

I wish I could have several books on the go at the same time but I've never been able to manage it. The most I'll do is an ebook and an audio at the same time and never the same genre (I start to confuse them if they're too similar).

I was at the library yesterday too but only picked up one book, I have so many books on my kindle and on my shelves that I haven't read that I feel like I should not be getting more. I'm hoping I can find books that'll fit the cards from the ones I already have.

message 12: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Hey Ana, good to meet you. You've picked a great challenge as your first. Uno is fairly straightforward and quite relaxed compared to some of the others but if there's anything you're not sure of ask away.

I do feel I should warn you it is a slippery slope. Once you do Uno there's a strong possibility you'll become a team challenge addict :)

message 13: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Ha! Alison, you are so right! While Uno was not my first challenge, I am totally addicted to the big group challenges! I can't seem to stop myself... I promised that I would cut back this year, but no. As soon as I saw sign ups for Uno I'm all like 'Sign me UP!'
Last night, I looked at our first four hands & mapped out what can fit with the books I've borrowed so far. I think I enjoy the planning even more than the actual reading. But I really like chatting and getting to know my teammates most of all 😄

message 14: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments I did exactly the same Lauri. One of my New Year's resolutions was to cut back on team challenges and within a week I'd signed up for Uno and volunteered to captain a team :) So much for easing off. At least Uno is one of the more straightforward ones and allows for a bit more flexibility in what you read.

I also love the number of people you get to meet and chat to doing these challenges. Although I have found it does not help my TBR :)

Are you doing any other challenges right now?

message 15: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I'm not doing any big group challenges right now. Just a bunch of individual ones and I have 2 forever TBR Twins I met in a different group. We hit it off so well, we've been reading together for a couple years now. I really enjoy being able to discuss books in an in-depth way with friends. I call them friends although we've never met -- our reading tastes and world views are just so compatible it's just a joy!

How about you? Thanks for being our Captain, by the way! I admire you all so much...

message 16: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments I tend to volunteer for captain (or co captain) due to a combination of control freakery and nosiness :) I can't stand not knowing what's going on.

No other big group challenges right now for me either. I'm doing the Upside Down challenge over at NBRC and I'm sort of trying to do the Popsugar challenge but I have a tendency to read what I want and try to make it fit rather than reading specifically for tasks.

ŷ is fantastic for finding reading buddies. I don't know many people in real life who read as much or the same types of books as me so it's great when you meet others here who do. I do try to convince friends and family to read books I've enjoyed but my success rate is low. So what kind of books do you read?

Crumb | 141 comments Could someone maybe answer this question for me... This is my first year playing UNO. Are we assigned hands before the game begins? Are those the hands that we are playing on the spreadsheet?

message 19: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Crumb wrote: "Hi all! I'm so excited to be playing this year!! It is my first time.. what tips do you all have for me?"

Hello and welcome to the team. Uno is great fun and not too challenging so don't worry about being a newbie. There are at least two experienced players on the team so we'll keep you right. It's also really difficult to go wrong.

My top tips -
- Try to finish off any books you're part way through before the start of the challenge. Only books started after the start of the challenge count so any books in progress can't be used. This also means it's best not to start a huge big weighty tome just prior to the start.
- Add your books to your Uno shelf as you go. It's easier to keep it up to date than try to fix it at the end of the month (it also makes the captain's lives easier).
- Keep a note of character names as you read (I have the memory of a goldfish so kind of have to do this), ideally we want to find as many different card options for books as we can.
- Make sure you shelf the edition that you're reading (and not the default one) particularly if it's for a colour task
- If in doubt about whether a book fits, ask before you read it. There's nothing worse than reading something only to discover we can't use it

Hands for each month will be assigned just before the start of the month. We have already been assigned our hands and cards for February which you can find in either of the spreadsheets linked at the start of the thread. I'll also post the February cards in one of the posts for those who can't see the spreadsheet.

Crumb | 141 comments Thank you for all the tips! I'm going to look at the hands and finish the book I'm reading.. I think that's the best way to go!

message 22: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Hi Crumb! Good to meet you! Whereabouts in the world are you? My best advice for you is to relax and enjoy the wonder that is UNO! It's really easy to make books fit into the slots, much easier than you imagine. I usually read with scratch paper or I stick a post-it on the inside cover and jot down character names... I really enjoy the planning most of all!

I usually read historical fiction, but lately I've been really into cozy mysteries, paranormal, chick lit & YA. I read between 5-12 books at the same time. I flit from book to book depending on my mood, I also don't like ereaders & don't do audio. I crave the feel & weight & even the smell of a real book! I know it's silly, but still. I once went through about a 3-year period where I read strictly romance novels! I had fabric covers for my books so people couldn't see the covers!

Lol. That is a brilliant solution although if you were sitting near me I would be sneaking a peak at the text :) I have to admit I love my ereader because no one can tell what I'm reading (I do like my romances) although it does sometimes require a bit of angling.

I do like proper books, I just find it easier with my kindle as I do most of my reading on the train travelling to work. Audio's are usually for when I'm driving or cooking so progress can be slow. I've also been having some issues with my phone just randomly starting to play whatever I've been listening to. Not so good when you're at work and have been listening to Call Me By Your Name. There are bits of that book you do not want to broadcast to your coworkers.

Also, I’m from Texas, though I have no such accent. I sound like I’m a little bit from everywhere (weird, I know, and totally my mother’s fault). When I start talking, people will ask, “So where are you from? I usually just stare at them weird. They don’t believe me when I try and explain that I’m local. Oh well!

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Hi Jessi & Lauren! Nice to meet you! I am in Hawaii and quite a night owl. Alison, II often feel very alone during challenges. I work days, Mon thru Fri so I don't check the posts till late afternoon & then obsessively keep checking long after my team has gone to bed :)

Sadly I am petless. Our landlord doesn't allow pets. We do feed one ginger cat in our apt. building's parking lot & like to pretend we actually have a cat....

Hello, hello! It's wondersul to meet you Lauri, Jessi, Ana, and Crumb! And Hello Alison! I love that you're in Scotland- I've alwasy wanted to visit over there. :D

Quick question: are we assigned "cards" to play? Like one person is assigned "0" and another a "2" and then we try and find a book that goes with that number? Or is it a free for all, and whatever you're reading, you try and find a place for it in one of the hands?

message 39: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Great question, Lauren! Yes, Alison -- how are you going to run this one? Should we call out certain cards, or should we just post our finished books with all their possibilities & then you just plug them in? I've been on teams that did it both ways & I don't really have a preference...

I really want to start reading now! Double drat! 🤓

message 40: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Rogers The numbers for the first hand is:
8
4
3
1
Draw 2
0
Wild Draw 4

So if we each pick one, would that work?

message 41: by Crumb (new)

Crumb | 141 comments I think if we each pick a card.. that would be quite effective. Although, I've never played UNO before..

message 42: by Crumb (new)

Crumb | 141 comments When does the game begin?

message 43: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Hi all, sorry I'm at work so just saw this discussion.

My preference would be not to call specific cards but to post completed books with all the card options. We'll likely have to juggle things around to where they best fit so the more options you can give for a book the better.

When we get further into the month we can have a look and see if there are any big gaps we need to fill and maybe start assigning cards then.

The cards I do think we need to assign are the colour and Wild draw 4s. They aren't always the easiest to find so we want to make sure they're covered. We currently have the following colour cards for February, in addition to two Wild Draw 4s (which you need to repeat one of these cards for) so if you could all have a hunt through your books and let me know if you have anything that'll fit that would be great.

9 YELLOW
3 YELLOW
7 YELLOW
3 BLUE
4 BLUE
4 RED
3 GREEN

message 44: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Crumb wrote: "When does the game begin?"

It starts on 1st February. I'll add a countdown to the official start time when I get home but only books started after then can be used

message 45: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments In terms of tracking books and completions I haven't asked for a separate books read thread as I find it easier to just have everything all in the one place. When you do finish a book could you please post here that you've finished and in the following format

Completion Post
Book title:
Author:
Completion date:
Pages (Word count for Children's books, Graphic Novels, Manga, Cook Books, Plays and Poetry books):

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Jessi wrote: "Question- When doing a Reverse card do you read a book another member has read from any hand? Or does it have to be from that hand?"

It's much wider than either, it just needs to be a book another team member has read at any time. They don't need to have read it for this challenge.

Ok! That sounds great!

message 49: by Crumb (new)

Crumb | 141 comments And how do Wild cards work?

message 50: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments A regular Wild means that you have to find a book that would fit one of the number cards in the same hand. You essentially duplicate a card in the same hand. Our first Wild for February is in hand 12. The other cards in that hand are 3, 6 8, skip and reverse so for the Wild you read a book that fits a 3, 6, 8, skip or reverse.

Wild Draw Fours require you to duplicate a colour card but as it's unlikely you'll have a colour card in the same hand you can duplicate any of the colour cards we have that month, but only once. So one player could read a book that fits 9 Yellow for one of the Wild Draw Fours but you'd need to find a book that fits a different colour card for any other Wild Draw Four.
