Hi Team! I excited to lead the challenge! I’m currently reading The Bookshop on the Corner, which is set in the UK, but can be flexible based on the other challenge categories. I will create a tracking spreadsheet this evening so that we can track our progress. I look forward to reading with you all :)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2962 comments Hello Team Europe!

I'm currently listening to The Siren which could work for the Greek flag (white and blue cover), and currently reading The Kingdom of Copper (not sure, maybe the Lithuanian flag at a push) and Romeo and/or Juliet (set in Italy).

Marina H | 1312 comments Hi Team.
I'm looking forward to work with you :-)
I'm currently working on a few books which I'm sure I'll finish during the readathon:

- Under huden by Belinda Bauer: Set in UK and author from UK
- Planen by Morten Pape: Set in and author from Denmark
- Sort land - fortællinger fra ghettoen by Ahmad Mahmoud: Also set in and author from Denmark
- Summer Sisters by Judy Blume

I have a couple of days of next week, so I hope to finish more books.

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Hey all!! Im finishing up the last 101 pages of The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland by Jim DeFede. So that will count towards something. I have to go reread the rules and I'll edit.

Happy reading everyone!

Edit: This could work for Turkey ( title starts with T). I can't find anything else :/

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) Maybe this will motivate me to finish Tomorrow Will Be Better: A True Story of Love and One Family's Triumph over the Horrors of World War II this week! It's set in and is by someone from Czechoslovakia (the part that is now the Czech Republic--I would assume that counts).

I have some stuff going on this weekend, so I may not get the big jump on reading that some of you can, but next week I'll try to really motor through some audio books that count, if I can find some.

message 7: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2962 comments I've had a quiet afternoon at work so managed to finish listening to The Siren by Kiera Cass (Greece: blue and white on cover).

Here's the wiki for European flags for anyone needing ideas:

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Update from the mods...

When using the title towards a county articles do not count, use the first letter of the first word.
This means my book would only count towards Denmark ( The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland) which looks like its already being used. I wasn't able to find author initials in any of the countries :-(

If anyone can think of any other places to fit it??
The Day the World Came to Town 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland by Jim DeFede
I have to check flags later... looks like my cover has blue and yellow.
Edit: Would work for Khazahstan or Sweden, wherever its better used :-) probably Khazahstan

Sofia | 33 comments Hi all! I've just start reading The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton (for my AtY week 6).

It sets both on UK and Australia, but I can use it for other countries (Finland, France, Kazakhstan or Kosovo). It's big book, but I want to finish it during the weekend. Let's go Europe!

By the way, I am from Portugal and I am reading the portuguese translation, I don't know if that helps somehow.

message 13: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Hello team! I am happy to be reading with all of you.

I just started Good Man, Dalton by Karen McQuestion. We can figure where to put it when the time comes. Hope everyone has fun!

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments Hello all! This is my first Book-a-thon and I'm happy to be here and looking forward to reading with Team Europe!

I am currently working on The Gilded Wolves The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves, #1) by Roshani Chokshi which I should finish this weekend. It is set in Paris, so could certainly cross France off the list. Green cover with some gold and the author's initials RC would give some other possibilities too.

I should also finish To All the Boys I've Loved Before To All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #1) by Jenny Han , but I'm not sure where to fit in. European countries really don't put "J" in their country names so author initials are out. I'd say the cover is predominantly white(ish), so I suppose it could be used for a country with white in the flag? I only had a little over 150 pages in this when I woke up this morning, so should be marking this one as done today.

Happy reading, all!

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments Hi Team Europe!

I have about 200 pages of Les Misérables left so I have France covered if it's still needed.

I'm next in line for The Song of Achilles at the library too so if that comes up I might be able to tick off Greece too.

message 16: by Deborah (last edited Mar 01, 2019 03:46PM) (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I finished To All the Boys I've Loved Before - not stunningly great literature, but I enjoyed it and it was good to read something light to kick things off.

This works to check off Turkey (starting with "T") and could probably also work for a country with a white flag if we need to shift things around.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #1) by Jenny Han

The Day the World Came to Town 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland by Jim DeFede

Can use it for either flag: Khazakhstan or Sweden, whichever you want to put it under.

Moving on to Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly
Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly

Could work for Hungary ( title)
United Kingdom or Ukraine ( author initials)
Flag for Azerbaijan (green/blue/red)

Jill | 725 comments Hi felllow Team Europe readers!
Charles Martin
I am currently reading two books. Both should be done by Sunday night.
Granite Mountain: The Firsthand Account of a Tragic Wildfire, Its Lone Survivor, and the Firefighters Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice which would work for either Germany or Georgia (title begins with “G)
And
Water from My Heart by Charles Martin which might work for Monaco or North Macedonia (initials from the authors name in both those country names).

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Hi All!!

I'm currently working on two books which I hope to finish up tomorrow.

Breach by W.L. Goodwater Breach by W.L. Goodwater can fit the following countries: Germany, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, or Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Set 50% in Germany
- Title letter for Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, or Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Cover/Flag colors are Red, Yellow and Gray which could match (if we call the Grey a form of Black) flags of Belgium or Germany

Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman can fit the following countries: United Kingdom, Cyprus, Liechtenstein, France, Iceland, Netherlands, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, or Switzerland

message 20: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 245 comments Hi Everyone! Here is the link to the spreadsheet.

I have it set up so that everyone can view it but only I can edit it. Let me know if you have any issues viewing the sheet. I shifted some books around so that currently each country has 1 book attached, and I noted in the "completed" column the name of the person expected to fulfill the column (TBC) and highlighted the people who have actually completed their books. Next to each book, I noted numerically the way in which way the book is fulfilling the country (see the second tab for the 5 options). Please let me know if you have any questions or if anything is inaccurate. Also, I can shift things around as people you finish more books, so that we make sure anything read is counted somewhere.

Lastly, for myself I will start by reading The Bookshop on the Corner (as mentioned for UK), Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows - title starts with E for Estonia, and The Best We Could Do - title starts with B for Belarus. I may get a 4th book in (hopefully).

Now that we have a template in place, I should be better at responding to specific posts throughout the week, and will check in at least daily.

Marina H | 1312 comments Goodmorning team!

The spreasheet looks great, Kristina!

It's only 6 o'clock in the morning here in Denmark but I'm up early and just making myself a cup of tea before picking up Summer Sisters. I'm halfway through but it's easy to read so I hope to finish today.

I do have to go shopping later and I have some work to do during the weekend, but I'll dedicate the rest of my waking hours to reading 😁

message 22: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I agree, spreadsheet looks great! Here, I'm starting to wind down for day one, but I did add My Plain Jane to my books in progress list. I think it's likely to be a quick read and could knock out any of the countries starting with M. This one has three authors, so I probably could find some initials that work too, though I havent looked yet.

I need to make a library run tomorrow, but otherwise plan on spending much of my day reading and enjoying a rainy day in.

Michelle (maezyreads) Hi! I'm newly added to this group as of last night.

I finished reading The Holiday Cottage by the Sea this morning. I'll let you choose which country to put it under as the UK is taken. (Takes place in England.)
North Macedonia (FYROM on map) - Holly Martin (HM initials)?

I'll be reading this soon and is written by an author from Sweden. My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Finishing up Hello, Universe for Hungary ( Quickly), I should be done in an hour or so.

After that I'm moving on to
The Silent Patient ( could work for one of the S countries: San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden)
and at night on my kindle
Nine Perfect Strangers ( could work for one of the N countries: N. Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway)

message 27: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I finished The Gilded Wolves to mark off France.

message 28: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 245 comments Welcome Michelle!

I've edited the spreadsheet through message 28. I also added the link to my first post (message 2) for easier access.

Hi Tracy, I've added The Silent Patient to Spain and Nine Perfect Strangers to Netherlands for now.

Are you all reading books that you plan to apply to the AtY challenge? Or other challenges you're doing as well?

message 29: by Marina H (new)

Marina H | 1312 comments I'm only working on one book for the ATY challenge. This year my goal is to only use books with more than 500 pages and I can't read two books that long at the same time.

message 30: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I'm reading for multiple challenges (ATY plus Popsugar and Reading Women). I'm trying to include some ATY prompts in my reading this week, but it somewhat depends on which holds come up at the library so I haven't hit any ATY prompts yet. My Plain Jane will be my first ATY completion of the week (I'm using this plus Jane Eyre which I finished last month for my two books on the same topic).

message 31: by Michelle (last edited Mar 02, 2019 12:37PM) (new)

Michelle (maezyreads) I'm currently working on my ATY challenge for 2019. I'm a super fast reader so I'm doing a few challenges this year. :)

I'm 1/4 of the way through My Dearest Enemy which can be used for Malta. (First letter.) I'll be finished it tonight.

message 32: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments I'm just doing ATY and Popsugar this year. I'm using the same books for both challenges.

message 33: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments Taking a quick break in my afternoon reading to let you know I finished Granite Mountain: The Firsthand Account of a Tragic Wildfire, Its Lone Survivor, and the Firefighters Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice which looks like is slotted for Germany. Don’t think I will finish my second book today but I should finish it tomorrow.
I am reading books for numerous challenges but my next book up (Hedy's Folly: The Life and Breakthrough Inventions of Hedy Lamarr, the Most Beautiful Woman in the World) will be for ATY.

message 34: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Finished Hello, Universe ( it was cute)

The first 2 books I've read counted towards Pop Sugar, but the next 2 are for ATY :-)

message 35: by Marta (last edited Mar 02, 2019 04:02PM) (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments Hello guys! Just checking in. It appears that my current reads are rather American, but I guess we can use titles.

I have just finished The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. I guess that might count for Albania, Armenia, Andorra or Austria, or if I go by the author’s initials, Sweden or Switzerland.

Well, Tales of the Tikongs is 92 pages, I guess that does not count, even though it feels longer as it is small print.... I am also working on Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles, this is a graphic novel, 168 pages, also feels longer. Author is Mark Russell, could work for San Marino.

I also have on deck The Enchanter by Vladimir Nabokov, which may work for Slovenia on author’s initials, or Russia for Russian-born author.

message 36: by Deborah (last edited Mar 02, 2019 04:12PM) (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I started Spelled this morning and I'm already halfway through so should have it done either today or tomorrow.

It would work for anything open that starts with S. It would also work for Bosnia or Belarus (author B.S.) though we do have things slotted in there already.

Cover is black, but there is red, white and blue (and a green title).

Spelled (The Storymakers, #1) by Betsy Schow

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Hi! Just checking in. I agree, spreadsheet looks awesome! I am a slow reader, and today was super busy, so I am still working on my first book. I am hoping to get more reading done tomorrow. Welcome to the new team members, and hope everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend!

message 44: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (maezyreads) Just finished My Dearest Enemy by Connie Brockway which works for Malta.

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) I probably won't have any finishes to report for a couple of days because of the length of the books I'm working on, and other stuff going on this weekend. I did forget to mention the other book I'm working on though: Reamde by Neal Stephenson.

The cover mine is orange with a little bit of black and white, so maybe we could do something with that or author initials.

message 46: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 245 comments I've updated the spreadsheet up to message 47. Great job on the progress so far!

Welcome Simone! I have slotted Snow Falling on Cedars for Serbia. Since San Marino is taken, I have slotted Beneath the Scarlet Sky for Belgium for the title.

Hi Jill - since the initials of the author of Hedy's Folly is R.R., I've slotted the book for Andorra.

Hi Marta - I've slotted The Age of Innocence for Albania. Unfortunately, Tales of the Takings is too short to count on it's own, I have slotted Exit Stage Left for San Marino for the author, and The Enchanter is slotted for Russia for the author.

Hi Deborah - I've slotted spelled for Slovenia.

Hi Raquel - For Reamde, based on the authors initials (N. S.), I have slotted the book for Liechtenstein.

I'm hoping to finish at least 1 of my books tomorrow. All of my books will apply for AtY, and 2 will apply for the Popsugar challenge. Also, since it's Women's History Month I'm trying to focus on reading women authors with women protagonists.

message 47: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2962 comments Not much to update, still reading Kingdom of Copper... Though I should be able to finish off my choose your own adventure book today easily enough.

message 48: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments Checking in to end the night, I managed to finish Spelled for Slovenia.

I'm about two-thirds of the way through My Plain Jane so expect to finish in the next day or two.

I'm starting Britt-Marie Was Here which could count for Bulgaria.

message 49: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments I finished Les Misérables this morning. My library hold hasn't come in for The Song of Achilles yet so I'll try and find something to take it's place

Marina H | 1312 comments I've finished Under huden this morning, so Ukraine is covered.
