Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments Hello Ladies!! What an awesome team 😁

message 6: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Hello! When I first saw this challenge I couldn't choose what stream - it is so fun to have another chance to do these tasks. Looking forward to playing with you!

message 7: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Oh just as a heads up, I'll be travelling tomorrow - May 28 and then June 5 til the end of challenge. I will have my laptop with me and be able to check in, although I'll miss my two monitors :)

Has anyone thought of a name? My only thought was maybe a mash-up of all our detectives, but I've never been good at thinking up names.

message 8: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Hi all, just checking in. Really looking forward to another shot at these tasks.

I am rubbish at team names but a mash up sounds good, either that or a detective team (although I've been struggling to think of any that aren't duos)

message 9: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments I'm not really any good at team names either. Maybe we should make Nanci come up with the name since she's checking in last. She should be checking in in the next day or so. I think she was doing a bike tour/ride thing that lasted through May 15th.

Just kidding about the name Nanci :)

Maybe we could do something with alliteration using the word detective or investigator?

message 10: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments How about the defective detectives? :D

message 11: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments LOL, I like it

message 12: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments Any thoughts or preference on how we should go about this?

Free for all on the tasks until close to the end? Or work methodically through the streams? I think we only get points if we complete the entire stream so the latter probably makes more sense.

Nanci and I did a B stream but I don't care if we just start at the top of the list and work our way down or are more selective with the stream choice.

message 13: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments We did a B stream too, but I'm ok with doing any. B seemed easier, but now I dont remember why! Methodical seems good, and we could even strategically pick 2 or 3 to work on first.
I do have a purple cover book I need to read for review. It's kind of long, so I may try to read it prechallenge, and yet its tempting to wait to start til the 20th :)
Oh I like defective detectives too!

message 14: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments We went for B stream too as it seemed easier, we didn't have many team members actively reading for specific tasks so went for the max number of spell it outs and page number tasks possible.

We probably should decide on a stream if we're doing one with really specific tasks. Three weeks is not that long.

message 15: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Hi all!
What an awesome team we have and I'm so thrilled to be a part of it! Thanks, Judith, for letting everyone know why I'm just now getting to the check-in.

We just got home from biking across the state of Missouri on the Katy Trail. We rode about 250 miles in 6 days through lots of different conditions. It was lots of fun, but it's good to get both feet back on the ground and I'm ready for another round of UNO!

Defective Detectives works for me. :)
I am flexible on how we accomplish the tasks. Off to look at them now!

message 16: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments I still like the B stream better after looking at the tasks again. Maybe we start with the B1 or B2 streams, work our way through all of them and then see where we are time wise?

Note: I’m saying “all of them but realize we may not have time for that either.

message 17: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments FYI I PM’d UNO Pixie our team name

message 18: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments And I just realized we’d already been renamed 🙄.

Our team name maybe a bit too accurate

sorry, I was stalking threads ;)

message 20: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments I think UNO Pixie is just the ultimate detective!

Nanci - that sounds like a wonderful adventure - but yes, I bet being home is also wonderful!!

We drove from Idaho to almost Kansas today - we're doing a bikeride too - only I drive and my husband rides, so I have a super easy role.

Hmm...with only 3 weeks, how many streams do you think we can get done (I think each is 30 books)? We have our spreadsheet too - yay! But maybe we should pick a couple? I'm really happy to do whatever everyone thinks.

message 21: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments Maybe start with 2 and see how it goes?

message 22: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments I am desperately in need of a trip anywhere at the mo so you're all making me very jealous. I just moved house at the end of last year so most of my time off has been spent unpacking, decorating and getting work done. It's great being in an actual house rather than a flat but the list of things that need done just keeps growing.

Is the best thing tactically to pick streams that are pretty close to each other? It could make it very boring reading wise (we'd be reading for the same tasks more than once) but would make it easier to move books around if it looks like we're maybe going to struggle to finish a stream.

That is a long drive, Suzanne! So funny that you're also on a biking trip, even if you're the one driving the car. Also funny to think that just a few days ago we were just a little outside Kansas City. Enjoy the scenery!

How fun to be in a new house, Alison! There's always tons to do, but it's a good sense of accomplishment to see things coming together. Hopefully, you'll be able to squeeze in a few days away in a bit.

message 25: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments I'm good with starting with B2 stream. How about we choose at least a pattern to go and then just see how far we get? Then we could start claiming tasks. I'm going to the library today to see what lower page books I can find to fit some of the tasks. :)

message 26: by Judith (new)

So you were thinking B2-B2a-B2aa to start?

Do we want the second to be B2-B2a-B2ab? (so all the same except for the last set)

Or go with a B1 stream?

I'm fine with doing either.

message 27: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments I'm fine with any of the streams. It's always fun finding books to fit tasks!

One thing I was wondering last night when I couldn't sleep is do we want to stay away from the streams with the various page counts? Our team did one of those, which made it so easy to place books. However, it does rope us into reading a couple long books, including one over 450 pages. I'm honestly not sure if that is an issue or not with a 3 week challenge!

I have some audiobooks that would be long enough to cover that length. As long as I don't have to do more than one or two that length I think we could make it work.

But you bring up a really good point that would be easy to over look.

message 29: by Judith (last edited May 16, 2019 08:20AM) (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments Maybe do B2-B2a-B2aa and then B1-B1b-B1bb to start?

We'd have a fair amount of spell it outs which should be easy to knock out and only one set of the page numbers.

Edit: or B1-B1b-B1ab

message 30: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments Nanci and I did B1-B1b-B1ab and I think the hardest tasks to find was male with black hair on cover (darn you dark brown), sunglasses on cover, and we sort of by accident lucked into the MC in hospital (but that is for all B streams).

message 31: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments I'm good with pretty much any stream. Between kindle unlimited and overdrive I can usually find something to fit most tasks. Some do rely on a bit of luck (MC in hospital) but we can always hunt the team spreadsheets for ideas.

message 32: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments I think those two streams (or the alternate) sound great!!

message 33: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments Okay, let's do B2-B2a-B2aa and then B1-B1b-B1bb to start.

I think we can just use the spreadsheet for tracking/sign-ups since we all have editing rights.

I'm going to take a few spots to make sure I don't inadvertently start a book too soon. Especially with my audio books. I tend to just go right to the next one on the list.

message 34: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Perfect! I’m at the library now, so I’ll look at the SS for that stream, Judith! I’m a slower reader, so if some of you can take the long ones with some audio books that would be fantastic!

message 35: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments I have a question about task 3B* 'read a book where the main character end up in the hospital". Could this be a mental ward in a hospital? I have a book where one of the MC are committed for a week or so. It doesn't sound like she's going to end up in there at the end of the story. Not sure yet. I just searched for the word "hospital" to see if it would work for the task and read a few paragraphs to sort out it was a mentally ill ward. What do you all think?

message 36: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments I would say that would work. I take that prompt to mean the person becomes a patient at a hospital at some point during the book. To differentiate from a character that might work there as a nurse or doctor.

Mental ward in a hospital is still part of the hospital and if they are a patient it works.

message 37: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Thanks for the clarification, Judith. I actually just realized I need to read it by tomorrow for another challenge, so I can't use it for ours. If anyone else wants/needs it for the challenge, it seems like it's going to be pretty page-turning!

message 38: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Oh nice - what is it called?

I'm excited we have a plan!

Nanci | 1864 comments Suzanne wrote: "Oh nice - what is it called?

I love having a plan!
The book is What Remains True by Janis Thomas. Warning...it is about the accidental death of a little boy, although it is lovingly told partly through the eyes of the boy, so far.

message 40: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Nice to know about one that will work. I will at least keep it in mind. Once I pick up the hubby from his late afternoon ride (so windy - I don't envy him!), I'm planning on spending my evening looking at books - yay!

message 41: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Headwind is tough when you're riding! How many miles/days is he riding?

message 42: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments About 60 to 75. More than hed like, but we had time constraints. Poor guy.

message 43: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments (I think total miles for this trip is around 450)

message 44: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Yowzer! That's a ton! We couldn't make very good time on the crushed gravel. Also, lots of it was soft sand, which was really slow and tough pedaling.
Hope he has better conditions tomorrow!

message 45: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Oh that's a rough surface!! What a neat experience though:)

message 46: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Do you ladies think that The Pioneer (The Pioneer, #1) by Bridget Tyler works for "just a persons head on the cover" ?

message 47: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments I also have The October Man (Rivers of London, #7.5) by Ben Aaronovitch which shows as 52.7% violet on tineye, which might work for the purple cover? But I could easily find a safer purple cover.

message 48: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Ok one more - we didn't have to deal with the whole black hair on cover thing. Would The Duke Is But a Dream (Debutante Diaries, #2) by Anna Bennett work?

message 49: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments That last one looks like black hair to me even when I blow up the picture

message 50: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1873 comments I think the head and color one work too.

You can’t even see her shoulders. And if I had to eyeball the color on the other one I’d say it was purple. I thought purple when I looked at it. But if others feel differently we can always find something else
