Well, you may be falling behind, but your choices still are timely. Both sound like great Octoberreads in preparation for Halloween.
Finch sounds like a pretty good sequel to City of Saints and Madmen, and possibly a little more coherently organized. In my opinion that can only help it, but "City of Saints..." held as one of its defining characteristics its postmodernist ramblings and meanderings. I wonder if even a slightly more coherent form will make the story lose any of its lustre (whether you liked that lustre or not).

To supplement my Halloween prep I just just picked up Ghost Hunters William James and the Search for Scientific Proof of Life After Death, but I already have 7 books on my currently reading shelf, so I'm really pushing it. And next month's sci-fi BOTM, Blindsight , yet to be started, looks downright scary also.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Went to B&N yesterday with a giftcard from last year that I finally used to pick up Soulless by Gail Carriger, Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith.

message 54: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) I accidentally bought an ebook from B&N yesterday. I wanted to use a three-day coupon I'd been e-mailed, but discovered after I'd already purchased the ebook that those coupons are not valid for use with digital editions. :(

So, I'm the proud (?) owner of my first ebook Best Served Cold.

My second ebook may turn out to be Way of Shadows if that book wins the run off for January.

Laurel Nyphron Rising just arrived in the mail! I know that I have about 5 books on the go, but I have to fit this one in - I'm so excited!

Peregrine Score! I found an abandoned copy of Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson by the back door of my apartment building. It's an older edition, and banged up, but free. I purchased The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin.

You'll have to let us know what Ariel is like. I've seen it at the bookstore a couple times now and it's on my radar...

message 59: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (sisimka) I picked up Time's Eye and Sunstorm yesterday at the library sale. Added to the TBR pile.

I'm heading to NYC for my annual trip in two weeks - any New Yorkers care to comment on any new and interesting literary destinations? A new bookshops (maybe a new used bookstore?) pop up?

Well, not literary - but if you like Irish or celtic music....I don't know if the Eagle Tavern is still there, or if they still do Tuesday Night Free Beer for Musicians in their back room - but it made for some unbelievable GOOD music, quite free, if you have a loose Tuesday night, and the stamina for all hours. Good as some major folk festivals....

I was in a book slump last week and almost read it. I am terrible for books. I buy them and never read them. I have it on a TBR pile so it is on the horizon.

I actually laughed out loud as I read your comment, Ken. Buying books we never read, dragging home piles of second hand treasures we think we need to own, slipping them onto the pile - rearranging the TBR pile to read the ones you want to first, instead of the ones you think you should read. Leaning the pile against a wall to stop it falling on the cat, and eventually buying a whole new bookshelf to contain it. It's all part and parcel of the reader's life, eh?

Jon (jonmoss) Got a tweet from that TGS made #1 on the NY Times Best Sellers list:

The Gathering Storm by Robert Jordan & @BrandonSandrson is a #1 New York Times bestseller! Congrats Brandon & Team Jordan! #TGS #WoT

I'll be curious to see your opinion of the Elizabeth Bear novel, Ron. I'm putting the finishing touches on my review of that one for FanLit.

As for me, I just received The Silver Skull by Mark Chadbourn.

message 71: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) I received The Affinity Bridge via BookMooch today in the mail. I also picked up a copy of The Hobbit Or There and Back Again at a used book store because it was in better shape than my three decades old edition. Also snagged A Sorcerer's Treason by Sarah Zettel and Song of the Beast by Carol Berg at the same time.

But what's really got my attention right now, is the signed/numbered copy of The Gathering Storm I received in the mail a couple of days ago. :)

I will let you know as soon as I'm through it, Stefan; at the moment I'm about three-quarters through "Ink and Steel" and very much wishing "Hell and Earth" was in mmpb so I could continue the story (Bear says it's one huge novel chopped in two by the publisher) without interruption.

message 73: by Laurel (new)

Laurel A friend who works at a local bookstore was able to get me a copy of Elantris in hardcover. I now have all of his books, save the YA series, in hardcover and am so happy! I'm often introduced to authors after they have been publishing for some time, and its getting increasingly harder to find their earlier work in hard cover.

Case in point, I am starting to read Lois McMaster Bujold and Steven Brust. I love their work, but can find very little in hardcover. Thankfully, I have been able to track down a copy of Curse of Chalion, The. It should be arriving next week!

message 74: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1404 comments Most of the early Brust wont be in Hardcover. I think the first Vald books were either Issola back in 2002

Jim Shannon (envaneo) | 37 comments Saturday I bought John RIngo's Book #2 in the Posleen war series.

Ron (ronbacardi) | 302 comments I found a new Neal Asher book "Shadow of the Scorpion" yesterday, and today was in a second-hand store and found Peter Hamilton's "Mindstar Rising" and one of Brust's Vlad novels, starts with a "T", thought I might give it a try.

message 77: by Jim (new)

Jim Shannon (envaneo) | 37 comments I've got a few Asher books on my shelf I've been meaning to try.

message 78: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (sisimka) McDevitt's Time Travelers Never Die and Sanderson's Gathering Storm finally arrived yesterday. I guess SFBC had more orders than they could fill by the release date on those! Anyway, husband has already laid claim to TGS - I'm still on book 7 or something of the WOT series. I've got my eye on the McDevitt anyway.

I'm hoping Ron has Taltos, which would be a much better starting point. (I still recommend reading them in order of publication, at least until he finishes the whole series.)

message 81: by Ron (new)

Ron (ronbacardi) | 302 comments Nope, it's Teckla all right. Maybe I'll save it until I find some better entry point. I hadn't really paid attention to the chronology, I just saw this and thought I might give it a whirl.

I'm forcing myself to not buy any books for myself till after the holidays. Our family exchanges gifts & I have some books on my list, so I'll shop for myself after the holidays.

message 83: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (rocalisa) | 487 comments I splurged and bought all the Vorkosigan compilations I didn't have from Baen's ebooks site. I have them all in paperback/hardcover already, but these days I find it a lot easier to read on my iPhone so it's nice to have electronic versions as well.

I do love Baen's policy on ebooks (all around $5 or $6, no DRM and they sell all over the world) and will be buying up Lee and Miller's Liaden books (which I also have in dead tree versions) next time I have some spare cash.

message 84: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (sisimka) Baen's ebooks are very, very cheap, they have webscription deals where you get a month's worth of reading for one low price too! Although I'd frequented their free library, I didn't start using their site in earnest until I got my Kindle, now I 'shop' there at least twice a month.

message 85: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1198 comments Baen has been very ebook friendly for a number of years now. The first publisher I've run across that has been so.

I really appreciate how they often will have first books available for free. You can try before you commit to the entire series. :)

My husband used to like the Honor Harrington books and one of the hard backs came with all of the books up to that point in ebook format. If I'm remembering correctly, it even included a note to feel free to share them with others. I always purchase from them when possible.

message 86: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I've wanted to read the Miles Vorkosigan series for a while now - everyone raves about it! However, I couldn't find it at my local book stores, nor did the library have it. Apparently, its been read to death and the books could no longer be repaired...

Happily, Lois McMaster Bujold announced on her site that she had recently signed a number of books at a Minneapolis book store that people could mail order. I've been wanting a signed copy of hers for a while, so I looked to see what they had. Warriors Apprentice has been re-issued in hard cover! It should be here in a week or so!

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I received RealmShift by Alan Baxter and On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers for my birthday. I also picked up The Legend of Drizzt Omnibus, Vol. 1 - the graphic novel format - because it's hard to find and I got a good price on it.

The Bishop's Man

message 89: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (rocalisa) | 487 comments I've just bought a historical mystery, The Ninth Daughter An Abigail Adams Mystery by Barbara Hamilton, after seeing a review on the Tor.com site, telling me it is both a good story and actually by Barbara Hambly.

Speaking of whom, Hambly has just put up four short stories on her website that can be bought in pdf format for $5 each that are futher adventures of some of her characters. At the moment, two are Benjamin January stories that have been previously published, one is a convention story and the last is a new story about Antrgy and Joanna from the Windrose Chronicles.

I have bought the latter, but haven't had a quiet moment to read it yet.

David Lawson | 10 comments I haven't shopped for books in a while, but recently I found White Gold Wielder by Stephen R. Donaldson. I get a little angry when no one in my generation has heard of these books, I demand advertising.

Laurel Jon just sent me a hardcover of Lions Of Al Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay so that I might get Kay to sign it in April when he tours! Jon, you're the greatest!!!

message 92: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1404 comments Thats a good book. He is touring in April cause of his new book coming out that month. Under Heaven is the name. Can't wait. He's another author who can do no wrong.

I just placed a very large order on Amazon to reward myself for reaching my weight-loss goal. The loot:

Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman
Scales of Gold by Dorothy Dunnett
Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon
Blindsight by Peter Watts
The Line Between by Peter S. Beagle
The Dosadi Experiment by Frank Herbert (for my husband)
and the entire Miles Vorkosigan series, which I've been meaning to try even before joining this group :) I figured I'd want them all so might as well get them all at once (when I could use Amazon's 4-for-3 discount on mass market paperbacks!).

Also, not books, but the entire series of Farscape on DVD which has just been released again so we were able to get it for $64 instead of the $400 that people were asking on eBay!
