This book was suggested as a buddy read because several people wanted to read it this summer. I moved it to the Current folder.

Who is planning to read this book?

Please discuss general comments about the book or the entire series, but do not reveal anything that might spoil the book for others. You can also discuss your first impressions about the book, based on the first few chapters.

If anyone would like to start a new topic thread to discuss the whole entire series, please feel free.

Linda | 915 comments I'm trying to get a copy. Won't be able to until after the 9th, since I leave Tuesday

Alison | 4 comments I got my copy this weekend from the library so will probably start reading next week sometime :)

Jenn | 12 comments I started it today and like it so far. It’s a little confusing at first but I expect it to be interesting.

Kim (skullfullofbooks) I finally bought the book after being too confused by the audiobook. I'm hoping actually reading it will help to alleviate my confusion. It just seemed like a lot was happening at once when I was listening to it originally.

Linda | 915 comments Looks like someone renewed the library's version, so I just broke down and bought it, knowing I can pass it on to my niece and fam or the orphans.
Jenn, I'm only through the first book, but like you, find it somewhat confusing in the way sci fi always is to me.......he's been hired to work on a project, but we don't understand what that project is. It's hit me in the past, the way McMasters Bujold can put out "plasma arc" in the first few pages, but you can kind of/sort of envision what it is. But it seems like those aspects are more important here, so it's hard to just dismiss them and keep on reading
I'm not sure I totally get the way construction on Trantor is, how they can move from place to place and never go outside. His description almost got me there, but fell short.
However, I am having fun with some of the inventions.....the way Asimov was ahead of his time with some technologies, such as the ability to interrupt or scramble spyware, paying with "credits", but others make me laugh.......like microfilm. I love that he thought microfilm would be a lasting technology. And calculators.

Kimberly | 33 comments I’m about 50% through, and find the text interesting and confusing. Each book time hops and so I have to orient myself in the future, with all the changes in leadership. I’ll keep reading but as of right now this is one of my least favorite GAR books. It’s not linear, and there are so many breaks/endpoints in the text. Will keep reading and report back.

Is anyone else reading the GAR Big Book of Books as you engage with the books on the list. I really enjoy reading the book synopsis after finishing the book, because they package the text and author “bio so nicely. I had to stop Foundation and read the synopsis in the Big Book of Books to better orient myself to the text. As I said- I’m finding this one to be an interesting challenge. Happy Reading!
