This is the spoiler thread for Foundation (book 1 in publication order). You can also comment on the whole series, however use a spoiler cover on comments that might reveal too much to others. You can also open a new thread topic to discuss the WHOLE series if you'd like.

Alison | 4 comments I read Foundation on the recommendation of my husband (it is one of his favorite series)! He said that it may seem disjointed because the book was actually first released as separate short stories in the 1950’s. I didn’t find it disjointed at all...one section seems to flow into the next pretty well! I am not a huge dystopian fan but did enjoy this read...especially the “psychohistory premise and think I will add the next in the series to my TBR! :)

Linda | 915 comments I'm having trouble with it, the same trouble that I usually have with sci-fi.
I'm through the first two books...........no women............wtheck?!
And so far, since the books pick up with totally different characters, I'm not invested in them, so I'm not sure that I care enough about the message itself to read the whole series. Maybe I'd do better with "I, Robot".

Jenn | 12 comments Yeah, this book didn’t work for me. I thought it had some interesting ideas but some parts were boring, especially the last part. Parts 1 and 3 were probably the best. I don’t feel compelled to finish the series and was surprised this book is a favorite of so many. I can see how it had original ideas that continued to inspire science fiction but I think more exciting science fiction is out there.

Linda | 915 comments I'm glad to know I'm not alone, not glad that I broke down and spent money on it and that the best parts are already behind me, when I'm only halfway through! :D

Linda | 915 comments I finished it. This will not be the book that "converts" me to sci fi. Won't finish the series, though I might give the robot books a chance.
I feel like the suspension of disbelief was too much to ask of this INTJ personality of mine, which picks up on nuances.....

Such as the shift from "Space only knows"(since there's no God) to "By Galaxy" and later, "By Seldon".......

Or why it is that there is no "God" any longer, but we still have monarchs, emperors, and royals, who were supposedly designated by God as "special" or better than the rest of the population. Stuff like that.

Kimberly | 33 comments Wow Linda! I finished the book and did not even see that no women were in the text.

Seriously? No women at all? I've heard that criticism about classic sci-fi before, but zero?

Linda, did we discuss the MBTI before? I'm also an NT - Intuitor and Thinker (ENTP or INTP.) Male Intuitors/Thinkers often like Sci-Fi, but women, not so much. Many college professors are also N's.

When I read the blurb for The Intuitionist I wondered if he was talking about Sensors vs Intuitors. One of these days I'll find out.

Note - I added a new folder to discuss the whole Foundation series.

I'm glad you liked it Alison. It's really nice when a couple can find books they both like.

Ha, I'll bet some of the analysts at Facebook, Amazon, and Cambridge Analytica were fans of Foundation, and are trying to figure out how to use psych-history to predict human behavior.

Cambridge Analytica (the company that got the Facebook leaked information) was trying to come up with the best measures to predict voting behavior and attitudes. Some of the Free personality tests online are used in databases to try to learn how to predict (or manipulate) voting attitudes, buying habits, etc.

My fear is that they've figured out that you can learn a lot about a person by the books they read.

Kim (skullfullofbooks) I'm bored about 50% of the way through. I keep thinking that maybe I drifted off and missed some action in the audiobook, only to double check my paperback copy and no, this is all it is. I am just not the audience for this book.

That accent was a pain in the butt to read too. I thought the narrator was just making up his accent for what felt right so I switched to reading it and that was a mistake, lol.

It really is a 50/50 with these books on whether I like to love it or hate it.
