Janis | 7 comments This was a book for an advanced English class in high school. I remember the title being I, Ego and I thought it was by Ann Rand. It takes place in the future, its very bleak everything is done for the common good. The main character is a girl, I don't remember her name - I just remember she couldn't understand the word "I" and how it worked in the sentence. There were very few books left. It was sort of like Farenheit 451 meets 1980.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Here's a list of classic dystopias.

/list/show/7...

There's others on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, even bigger than this--but they usually have a mix of classic and modern. This one is strictly classic.

Janis | 7 comments Thank you for the advice - I checked the list no such luck. I'm surprised I didn't see The crysalids on the list, it would fit right in.

Melanti | 330 comments It seems silly to mention it, but have you looked at Anthem by Ayn Rand? It's quite commonly taught in high schools.

There's a secondary main character who is female and "I" doesn't show up until the last couple of chapters and I think the word "Ego" is pretty important in the very last chapter. And they don't see their first book until the last few chapters either.

Janis | 7 comments Thank you, this could be it. I wonder why I remember it as I,Ego. Perhaps that was the name of a chapter. I think this is the only book from Ayn Rand that I don't own.

Again thank you, it does sound like the correct book
Janis

Melanti | 330 comments It's out of copyright by now so you can scan through and make sure before buying a copy.

It looks like most of the chapters are untitled but the next to last one is called "I am, I think, I will." Or perhaps your teacher assigned some supplementary reading entitled "I, Ego" or made a big deal of those words in particular?

Janis, do you want to make sure it's the right book before we moved this to Solved?

message 8: by Janis (new)

Janis | 7 comments yes please. The book I read was quite slim not thick like Anthem, perhaps we were reading a condensed version or a specific extraction from the main novel. I'm going to try sending an email to the school board - they should know what reading materials were handed out in class.

Michael (otisbookjones) | 2 comments Anthem is a very short novella, only about 100 pages or so...

Janis | 7 comments Ok. Move it to the solved, I don't know what I was looking at online but this is sounding like its the correct book.

Thank you all of you
Janis

You might have accidentally been looking at another of the author's books, Atlas Shrugged, which is quite a doorstop!

This has now been requested by 3 people meaning Ann has to read it.
