Glad you enjoyed it! I bailed on this series after 5 or so books. I like having a pair to root for and my little heart couldn't take a more realistic dating style.

Could you edit the top part to shelf #3 favorites? Thanks!

Thanks for checking in :) I'm... staying above water. Work is less than ideal and it's all I've been living and breathing for the past few weeks. Reading has unfortunately taken a backseat to that and mindless TV. I'm addicted to my current read though and hoping that will stick a band-aid on everything.

No worries! Thanks for letting me know :) Hope it's a trip for fun!

Book - The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas
Shelf - Favorites
Pages - 435 pages
Date Read - Oct 8
Rating - 5 stars
Review - Well... I've made a huge mistake. I can't believe I didn't follow the crowd and pick this up sooner. I'm so disappointed that I don't get to eagerly await releases etc for this series. The Assassin's Blade is everything I want when picking up YA, a stong MC, tons of action and intrigue, fantastic side characters... emotional investment (sobs).
The Assassin and the Pirate Lord
Perfect introduction to Celaena and her world. I'm seriously impressed with how well crafted this novella was. It introduced several characters, a world, had it's own complete story arc AND an ominous overall series story arc, and none of it felt rushed to me. (view spoiler)
The Assassin and the Healer
Loved this novella just as much as the first. I wish it had picked right up where Pirate Lord left off but am also sort of relieved... I enjoyed seeing this new side of Celeana. She's growing as a character so quickly but it all has seemed very genuine considering the huge life events. I really hope we meet Yrene again.
The Assassin and the Desert
I was expecting to like this novella the least, it gave me so many GoT's Pyat Pree and Faceless Men vibes (both of which were some of my least favorite parts - yet I love fantasy cults). I ended up liking this novella just as much as the rest and absolutely adored the characters introduced in it.
The Assassin and the Underworld
Loved it and hated it! And loved it some more. I'm not a big fan of sayings that include 'all the feels' buuuttt this novella definitely gave me those.
The Assassin and the Empire
:O Excuse me while I rearrange my other book choices to try and immediately pick up Throne of Glass. Maybe it's a good thing I have the whole series to just binge through if that's how the author does cliffhangers!!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Review: Miranda is 16 when a meteor hits the moon and throws it off kilter and closer to the earth. Within days tides are raised to extraordinary heights and tsunamis wipe out low lying coastal areas. But this is only the beginning. Soon there are earthquakes and volcanoes erupt; the weather changes as ash fills the sky. At the beginning Miranda's mother stockpiles everything she can before other's start planning. The story covers decisions her family, neighbors and friends make to survive. A devastating look at the world in crisis and its effects on the small scale. Well done. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Review: Callie Sharpe, online wedding planner, has returned to Lucky Harbor at her parents request to check up on her grandmother, Lucille. She has had a couple of fire incidents. Lucille is a social media terror, matchmaker, and eccentric but mentally in tact. Tanner Riggs and 2 partners run Lucky Harbor Charters. In high school he was the jock and risk taker, she was the nerd with a crush on him. He had a shotgun wedding at seventeen, a son and was divorced at 19. What followed was years as a SEAL and explosives expert on offshore oil rigs before an injury brought him home. He now has his 15 year old son living with him. Callie was left at the altar. Both are relationship phobic. Good addition to the series.

Book - Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco
Shelf - Vampires
Pages - 435 pages
Date Read - Oct 15
Rating - 4 stars
Review - I forced myself to not immediately devour Throne of Glass and ended up picking up this sequel instead of my originally selected vampire read.
I enjoyed this book just as much as the first. It was charming and fun and fast and interesting and very, very awkwardly YA. Maniscalco is heavy handed with 'big ideas' like feminism (Audrey Rose is a young woman who is interested in forensic science, specifically autopsy work). I was incredibly excited that this book featured a side character lgbt relationship but that too required big monologues about how wrong people's prejudices are of these times. I get it, it's the 1800s. I don't need to be spoon fed, nor does the intended audience in my opinion. I LOVE these inclusions in historical mystery YA but just wish they were more seamlessly written into the story.
I loved the Romanian setting for this one. I wish more genre books were set in places other than the US and UK. The Romanian folklore was so rich and interesting. I was surprised to learn that strigoi wasn't a word Richelle Mead made up for the Vampire Academy series! I also learned quite a bit about Dracula/Vlad Tepes. I would love to find an adult urban fantasy set in a small, secluded, extremely superstitious community (I feel like there's a series that fit this perfectly on the tip of my tongue and I just can't reach it...).
This book gave me a lot of And Then There Were None vibes. I absolutely loved the small setting and cast, as well as feeling like everyone had been brought to one place to be murdered. Combined with the folklore, it made for a very fun October read.

How are you and Sandy coming on your Free Space?
I noticed Team 3 already has 4 in a row (needs shapeshifters). Four others have 3 in a row. The rest of us have 2. :(

I just saw that :O I can't believe they're so close with only 4 shelves called so far! My fingers are crossed that this isn't a quick game.
I don't believe Sandy will be back until next week. I, however, need to start mine. I've been hoping for challenges to line up but this weekend is looking good for reading.

Review: Ruis Elder is a Null in a psi society, where everything is run by psi and his 'gift' negates psi wherever he is. As someone who lives as an unemployable outcast he steals when necessary. When he is caught he must face the Council. Ailim D'SilverFox, judge and new head of her family, must petition the Council for a $1.5 million gilt loan to save the Family Residence. They meet in the Council antechamber. Ruis' Null qualities blanks her psi telempathy, removing all her stress and makes her restful. He is pleased to find someone who appreciates his qualities. Though they are separated by their status and abilities they determine to help each other. This was a very satisfying futuristic romantic suspenseful adventure.

Book - Kingdom of Exiles by Maxym M. Martineau
Shelf - Fantasy romance
Pages - 450 pages
Date Read - Oct 23
Rating - 5 stars (maybe 4)
Review - Kingdom of Exiles wasn't AT ALL what I anticipated. Because of the cover and the author's pen sounding name, I assumed this book would be light, fluffy and, frankly, not that great. I was completely wrong. Kingdom of Exiles has a rich, unique world that I cannot wait to dive back in to. I really enjoy 'quest' story lines with a band of characters so this was especially my kind of book and I'm so glad the world was worth exploring. I loved Leena, our heroine, and her magic system of taming and calling on her creatures. I really appreciated how deeply she cared for her beasts as animals are near and dear to me, it would likely have ruined the book for me if they'd been disposable to her. Noc, our hero whom I hated quite a bit upon first meeting, and the Cruor's powers were a little less interesting to me but I really hated them in the beginning... Which brings me to my maybe 4 rating. Noc definitely wasn't my ideal hero for Leena. When you have a band of characters, I feel like the hero we're supposed to root for the heroine to be with really needs to be something special and stand out. He was just not my favorite.

Review: The Main characters, Rain and Ellysetta, are connected in a way that happens only once. They are soul mates. Rain, having scorched the earth a thousand years ago, feels evil begin to rise again, but in order to save his people he must claim his soul mate, Ellysetta. But others are after her too. A spurned suitor, royalty, and evil mages. Rain must keep her safe at all costs while waiting for her to decide to be bonded to him.
This was a great book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the world of magic that was created in this book and the growth of the character Ellysetta. Well done to the author...

Review: A plague, call The Doom, erupts in Scotland and quickly crosses the world killing billions. Some people are immune and others get new or enhanced magical powers. As with any disaster there are those looking for a scapegoat and the magicals, named The Uncanny, become the target. The story follows 3 groups originating in NYC, all deciding to head west for various reasons. Max and Lana are witches who head to western PA to find his brother. Arlys, Chuck and Fred head for OH to find Arlys' family. Dr. Rachel, paramedic Jonah and Katie with 3 newborn babies just head out of the chaos looking for a safe place. All run into a variety of situations until they meet up about halfway through the book. Then survival and rebuilding become a focus, with ultimately a new set of problems and disasters. Exciting, great world building and beginning to a series. Very different for Roberts but her characters are typical of her style and her concepts fall in line with her past writings. Very good new direction.

Review: Rachel is a bounty hunter, along with her vampire partner that wants her blood and her friendship. After making a mistake that hurt Nick, that relationship is faltering and Kisten is looking pretty good.
Rachel is still fighting being a familiar to Al and must ensure she never gets in this power. This alternated between fast paced story and dragging in some sections. I did not find this as good as the last one but will probably read on in the series to see if it was a fluke.

5 supernaturals
Review: Alexia is a spinster, but she has come to terms with this...that is until Lord Maccon turns up when she accidentally kills a vampire. But he was such a young vampire. Being Soulless and a preternatural she can turn any supernatural back into a human so long as she is in contact with them.
There are some awesome characters in this one and the story line was very good. This also included some fairly humorous scenes even if some of the characters were typical of the era that it covered. I really found this to be a greatly enjoyable book and could be a new favorite of mine as well.
