OMFG :-)

To anyone under 30 this probably means nothing, but to us old farts, this is a return to our youth.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2217 comments Huh...not under 30, but not a return to my youth either... the far side = amusing cards? The art-style certainly looks like the stuff you see in the humour section of card shops and the name rings a bell.

David H. (bochordonline) Not greeting cards, Ruth!

The comics often had a lot of great science jokes, and one of his comics led to the name now commonly used for the tail-spikes that the stegosaurus had:

Which quite a few Palaeontologists hate because there is a good word for it.... Spikes.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2217 comments David wrote: "Not greeting cards, Ruth! "

Yeah, I looked it up after posting. I've only ever come across the cards though, or maybe seen the calendars in shops, so I assumed that's what the designs were made for.

The style does lend itself well for greeting cards.

On its best days 'The Far Side" was brilliant. Even on a bad day they still made me smile. Much like XKCD

We don't know much about what's coming other than the tease page.
But it better be new material Gary :-?

;-)

Trike | 11064 comments I saw this the other day and I’m tempering my expectations. The strip is endlessly quotable and we do it all the time. (“The coconut-like sound of their heads colliding secretly delighted the bird.) Some of my all-time favorite Far Side cartoons involved UFOs. Pretty much every time a flying saucer showed up I laughed and laughed.

Mark (markmtz) | 2812 comments I received The Complete Far Side, 19801994 as a Christmas gift a few years ago. It is a glorious collection.

Brian (yetanotheranotherbrian) | 24 comments I also have the two volume "The Complete ..." and concur with the glorious rating.

Mark (markmtz) | 2812 comments After Larson retired, countless cartoonists continued to mimic his style. One of my favorites is a one-off drawing by a fellow named Curt Danhauser, who like myself, is a Trekkie...

message 11: by Mark (new)

Mark (markmtz) | 2812 comments And cartoonists are still drawing Far Side-style panels. This one from last year by another Trekkie

message 12: by Mark (new)

Mark (markmtz) | 2812 comments I'm a little worried. Larson's humor was always amiable. The world has gotten a lot meaner in recent years.

I loved me some Far side back in the day.

School for the gifted is still a personal favorite

I just hope this reboot comes anywhere close to my memory of it.

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5145 comments I might quibble that the world was more amiable back then, but...Berkeley Breathed has done a bangup job with Bloom County over the past several years. If Larson can bring back Far Side half as well it'll be a massive hit.

You may be right, but it's seems much easier to see the meanness.

Breathed hasn't missed a beat in his comeback.

I wonder what Bill Watterson is up to these days?

Now, THAT would be the trifecta. Bloom County, Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes. *Picard voice* Make it so!

message 17: by John (Nevets) (new)

John (Nevets) Nevets (nevets) | 1894 comments Didn't he make a reappearance a few years back where he did some one else's comic strip with out telling anyone?

Yep, here is the story. Man I'm getting old, I thought this was like 2 years ago, turns out it was 5.

message 18: by Mark (last edited Sep 18, 2019 07:56PM) (new)

Mark (markmtz) | 2812 comments Calvin & Hobbes have also made several appearances in Bloom County on April 1 2017, 2018 and maybe 2016. I'm not sure if Watterson was involved in drawing the strips, but I think it was done with his permission.

I definitely remember Far Side cards in UK shops in the 90s, so if this is a Mandela Effect false memory, it’s shared by both of us Ruths...
I’m pretty sure my dad still has a compilation book in his toilet...

I'm expecting a lot. How can I maintain my cranky old man persona, if I don't get disappointed often ;-)

Mark wrote: "I wonder what Bill Watterson is up to these days?."

That would be more exciting than "The Far Side", but very unlikely.

Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side and Robotman were my go to comic strips in the 80s and 90s

If that isn't Watterson, Breathed can do a damn fine Calvin...

Thanks for that video link! I enjoyed it. Darn doors... grumble grumble...

message 26: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 4392 comments I use the fact that badly designed doors are called "Norman doors" as a conversation point whenever I come across one. :'-)

message 27: by John (Nevets) (new)

John (Nevets) Nevets (nevets) | 1894 comments Where I work we have some non standard/ custom doors that need to be that way for some practical reasons. From the outside the doors look normal and have a handle that makes it pretty obvious it is a pull door. Once inside the door is carpeted and just needs to be pushed to open. There is a slight half recessed moon handle that is necessary to pull in the door against a gasket to dead bolt it from the inside. I'd say 85% of the people get it right on the first try, probably because they remember that when they came in they pulled, so when they leave they should probably push. We do often get new people using this door, so for many it is there first time.

My desk is near one of these doors, and every so often I notice somebody struggling with how to leave. And I have to say "just push". While not as bad as some of the doors in the video, I'm now thinking I should put a plate on that has push engraved on it, on the door. It's only been this way for 12 years. ;-)

I finally got around to reading The Design of Everyday Things and I thought it was pretty good, although quite outdated. (First published in 1988.)

In my review I contrast the superb design of my Volvo versus the utter shit design of my Mercedes: /review/show... Bad design can kill you.

Do you have photos of your trip online?

message 31: by Mer (new)

Mer | 205 comments @Trike, I dont. There are quite a few of them. I’m sure they’re out there but the url list would be huge. I could scan to my icloud and share but that would be IP infringement. Thoughts?

I meant pics of Zimbabwe, not the Far Side cartoons.

Although the photos from the trip are paper, rolls of film, and in file formats that are no longer convertable, it just occurred to me that I did just do a tech refresh on my iphone. I'll dig out my photos and rephoto some for you.

This is now live. As of the 24th of December.

It is just re-runs of older cartoons, for now. But their is the promise of new material from Gary Larson.

TheFarSide.com offers a deep dive into Gary’s offbeat sense of humor with The Daily Dose, an ever-changing, random selection of cartoons. Comic Collections offer a different themed collection of his classic cartoons updated weekly. You’ll also find exclusive, never-before-seen extras such as sketches straight from Gary’s personal Sketchbooks. And finally, beginning in 2020, and commemorating the fortieth anniversary of The Far Side, we will periodically unveil new work by the man himself! In truth, we really have no idea what might show up. But, on the other hand, what’s changed?

A letter from Gary Larson:
