Hi everyone! We're doing something slightly different in 2020. Our reading challenge is based on 10 creatures/magical beings, so for our 2020 group reads, we'll choose which magical being to read about as a group next. Then, we'll nominate books, vote on which books to read, and we'll have our group reads.

Here's the poll: /poll/show/1...

Fairies/Changelings won our poll! Now it's time to nominate books that contain fairies and changelings. You can nominate: 1 adult book, 1 YA book, and 1 traditional collection or individual tale. Nominations end in one week, Monday the 30th, and then we'll vote to determine the winning books.

Happy Holidays!

We had a Fae group read a few years ago and I am happy this theme won again, because I can ever get enough.
Just so we don't nominate the same books again this is what we have already read:
/topic/group... and we read Roses and Rot, Except the Queen and The Darkest Part of the Forest, all of them phenomenal books that I enjoyed immensely and highly recommend!
We also read some interesting novels with Fae in our portals group read : /topic/group.... The Treachery of Beautiful Things and Stardust
For our Yuletide group read we read /topic/group... and Some Kind of Fairy Tale which also has an interesting take on the Fae.
Can some of the long time members please help remind me what other books with fairies we have already read so they are Not nominated again?

Margaret wrote: "We've also read The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, Seven Wild Sisters and Someplace to Be Flying by Charles de Lint, all delightful."

Someplace to Be Flying does not have any fairies in it. Neither does The Cats of Tanglewood Forest, but Seven Wild Sisters does.

If anyone is not sure what to nominate we have not had a group read for Tam Lin by Pamela Dean
I am not going to nominate it myself because I have already read it, but if someone else wants to and by any chance it wins, I would definitely participate in a group read.
There is a thread for it and I suggest NOT reading it because it has spoilers. I started it because I was considering ditching the book after the first part and I was asking people if it gets better. It was hilarious to reread the old thread because I ended up loving it, so much that I reread it. It is one of those books that starts out very realistic, so much so that I wondered if it had been wrongly categorized as fantasy, but the magic is definitely there but hidden at first.

Other great fairy books that I am suggesting because we have not had a group read for them, but am not nominating myself because I have read them ( but would participate in group reads for them) are:
Tithe by Holly Black
Winter Rose by Patricia A. McKillip
Jack, the Giant Killer by Charles de Lint

When I was lookIng up for more Faerie books I found this thread in the Mythic fiction group :
/topic/show/...
I noticed a lot of members here are in it. I used to be, but when the moderator took off and left the group without one, I left too. Anyway I just rejoined.

Other good suggestions for people to nominate, that we've not had group reads for, how could I have forgotten, War for the Oaks by Emma Bullone of the first Urban fantasy books ( before Urban fantasy became what it is now) and Elfland by Freda Warrington

I'll nominate Tam Lin by Pamela Dean for Adult. I still haven't read it!

Tithe by Holly Black for YA, another I haven't read yet!

For traditional, I'm going with something slightly different: Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. I think this should count as traditional since it's a classic, but if people disagree, I can find something else!

That's okay. In the past we have sometimes read children's books instead of YA. More important is the content fits the theme.

The types of fairy books I love best are the ones that take place in our world or mainly in our world with the magic hidden at first, but it hard finding something that is not PN Romance

You might like Changeling's Island. (Just a rec, not changing my nomination. 0:)

It does look good! I remember you nominated it a few years ago, but I did not vote for it because my library didn't have it.
I just requested it as an inter library loan, but who knows when it will arrive! I am still waiting for The Owl, the Raven, and the Dove: The Religious Meaning of the Grimms' Magic Fairy Tales which I wanted to read for the challenge.

message 21: by Niledaughter (new)

Niledaughter | 52 comments YA : I am going to read The Queen of Nothing, I am not sure if the nomination is suitable since there are two books before it in the series , if not I would second the nomination of Tithe

Adult : I have no new book to read for now, but I already read Fever Series ( 1 to 5) and liked it if you would like to put it in your consideration
/series/4119...

Also War for the Oaks was a nice read, it works for both fairies and shapeshifters.

It seems I did not make myself clear

I nominate :
1- YA The Queen of Nothing
I wanted to know if will be considered as a nomination or not because it is the third part of the trilogy.

2- Adult Possession

The other books - Fever Series and War for the Oaks - were only suggestions if anyone would like to consider nominating , I would be open for reread or discussion.

Possession is a great choice!

I have been thinking about what we can do for The Queen of Nothing. Because its the third book in a series it definitely couldn't be a nomination but you can two things, either:
Nominate the first book The Cruel Prince and if I wins and generates interest we can set up a threads for the entire series
Or
You can ask if anyone wants to read it as a buddy read, in which case we can also put the thread in the same group read folder.

How does that sound?
Edited to add I would definitely do a buddy read for Queen of Nothing! I have ordered it from my library but there is a very long cue!

Because there were less YA and Traditional Tales choices than adult books I have only nominated them
YA The Iron King (The Iron Fey, #1) by Julie Kagawa
And the Original Tam Lin tale, which I believe can be found online

The Iron king caught my attention because it always pops up on the Fairy lists. The cover is a bit off putting, but that's rarely the author's fault. It has mixed reviews but the reason I am nominating it is because my library has a number of copies and there is not much of a cue.

No problem, I already started reading "The queen of nothing". I will not nominate for the YA category this round.
Thanks :)
