Hi all! Starting up the monthly discussions for March 2020 book-of-the-month suggestions. This discussion is for the CLASSICS CATEGORY.

Books that qualify for this category:

1. Must have a publication date 1969 or before. For newer books, please make your suggestion on the Modern Classic/Popular Reads thread.

2. Have not been previously ready by this group. Previously read books can be nominated in the Bookshelf Catchup thread. See the group's Bookshelf for previously read books.

3. Be reasonably well-read to fit the "Everyone Has Read This but Me" claim.

Not a hard and fast rule, but please try to limit your nominations to one book per category. But please do second any that interest you! The number of seconds determine poll inclusion.

>>> Attention, please: We will be featuring page numbers in the poll, so please include page numbers in your nomination if possible.

Nominate by January 15 to count

Betsy | 930 comments Vincent, Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky's translation.
I'm one of those kinds of people that believe translated books are really difficult because the translator is basically rewriting it, so they must be creative authors themselves.
I studied English Literature with this copy and I wouldn't have wanted another. I looked at various translations and they change so much, even the way of constructing sentences. I think this version is great for seeing the mirroring layers there are in the story. Very deep and beautiful.

Thanks much - I just downloaded a sample from Kindle and if the group selects it I will try it - or else get to it later - in the midst of a few books now
