BarbaraAnn Hi Everybody! Welcome to Spaceship Shortbread

Please introduce yourself and tell us where you are, if you've played UNO, what you like to read, etc.

My name is BarbaraAnn and I think this will be my 3rd year playing UNO. To me, this is one of best team, games because it's pretty low stress. I live in Illinois in the US, so currently stay indoors as much as possible until spring takes hold. I read a bit of everything - fantasy, mystery, science fiction, etc.

message 13: by BarbaraAnn (last edited Jan 21, 2020 06:44PM) (new)

BarbaraAnn For the most part, I don't think there's any need to claim books to read ahead of time - most books will work for a number of cards. Color cards are the big exception. I've listed the color cards for February - feel free to claim those if you have any books that match. I've set up a team spreadsheet by the February color cards that everyone can access and use to enter books - if anyone isn't comfortable using a spreadsheet, just enter a tracking post in the thread and one of us can enter the book data into the thread.

Tiffany Oiney_Reads_Another (oiney_reads_another) | 66 comments My name is Tiffany. I've never played UNO or any other team reading challenge. I live in Ontario Canada. I like to read all different genres, and I have a major case of FOMO(fear of missing out) due to my addictions to Instagram book reviewers! I look forward to playing with you all!

Here is my UNO Shelf

Elizabeth | 47 comments Hi everyone! My name is Elizabeth, and I live in Ottawa, Canada. I'm excited to see another Canadian on the team! (Hi, Tiffany!)

I've never played UNO before, but I've played other team reading games in the past. I'm excited to jump into this one!

I have pretty eclectic reading tastes, so I'll read just about anything. I love sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers, mysteries, nonfiction, self-help, biographies, etc. Two genres I don't enjoy are classics and young adult fiction, but just about everything else is fair game.

I'm boarding a cruise ship in a couple of days and I won't have internet access for a week, but I'll be back on February 1st ready to jump in!

message 17: by BarbaraAnn (new)

BarbaraAnn Hope you have a great trip Elizabeth!

message 18: by Cinthia (new)

Cinthia (cinthiah) | 308 comments I'm Cinthia, and I live in Michigan, USA. This is either my 3rd or 4th time playing UNO. This is one of my favorite team challenges and I look forward to playing with all of you.

I read almost anything, but my preference is towards YA and NA books, especially if there is romance involved. In the past few years I've also learned to enjoy fantasy and paranormal books. My least favorite genres are thrillers and mysteries, so it looks like we have a pretty rounded team with all sorts of preferences. :D

Thank you BarbaraAnn for setting up the spreadsheet. That's the format I think works best because we can all see the possibilities for the books. It makes it so much easier to switch things around. :)

message 19: by Denise (last edited Jan 23, 2020 04:57AM) (new)

Denise (duckiedee) | 83 comments Hello! I'm Denise and I currently live in Rhode Island. This is my 2nd time playing... I played a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to playing again and getting to know you all. I love to read almost anything, not a huge fan of romance novels, but if it has an actual plot and original story to it I'm game. Lately I have been focused on spiritual exploration and biography, but I also love to read fiction of all kinds.
I agree, the spreadsheet is a great way to keep us organized and on track. Thank you BarbaraAnn!

Anubha (BooksFullOfLife, LifeFullOfBooks) (anubhaghoshal) Hello everyone! I am from India, Asia. I haven't played Uno before and this is my first time playing this game. This is actually my first team challenge and am eager to participate! I can read any genre but my preferred ones are Fantasy, Historical fiction, Middle grade fiction, YA, Classics, and Mysteries. I don't usually pick up non-fiction by choice because I have to read a lot of non-fiction for my post grad. So yeah, hope you all are having a nice day/night. (Time difference I guess?)

message 21: by Kamaria (new)

Kamaria (bonniegealach) | 83 comments Hello, I'm Amar from Lebanon, Asia. Haven't played UNO before so this is too my first time as well.
I'd read any book genre, really, but fantasy is what hypes me best!

message 22: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 11 comments Hi everyone! I live in Pennsylvania, USA. This is my first UNO challenge along with being my first team challenge. I love to read pretty much anything that catches my eye. My least favorite categories are spy/espionage and romance with no plot. My favorites are fantasy and mysteries.

Raine (raine_renner) | 23 comments Hi all! I'm Raine! 've been sick with the flu this past week so I'm finally getting around to checking in with this group finally.

I'm from Illinois. This is probably my 2nd or 3rd UNO challenge, though the last time was a few years ago. I pretty much read romance books, though I've just recently binge-watched Good Omens on Amazon Prime so I may add that book to my TBR.

message 26: by BarbaraAnn (new)

BarbaraAnn Hi Everybody - HAPPY MONDAY!

re Colors - generally, if something looks like a color, it will work. the main thing is to make sure the color fits for the edition you're reading as another edition wouldn't count. It looks like our team will have a lot of different types of books read, which is great except that my TBR will probably grow by leaps and bounds as I see books others have read and need to add them. Less than a week to go before we start.

I feel the same way! I love seeing what other people are reading, but that always leads to my TBR being hundreds of books long lol. I'm really loving figuring out where my current Feb tbr fits within our monthly hand.

BarbaraAnn Hi Karla - please either enter your book into the team tracking sheet with the options it will fit or if you're not comfortable with google sheets, please enter a tracking post when completed.

message 35: by Kamaria (new)

Kamaria (bonniegealach) | 83 comments A misconception on my part, do we choose a hand to play? I could start any minute, but I don't know what to do..

message 36: by BarbaraAnn (new)

BarbaraAnn Hi Amar - one of the great things about Uno is you can read just about anything you want and it will work. Please keep track of characters & locations to see what cards your book might work for. When you've finished a book, either mark the book/items in the tracking spreadsheet or enter a tracking post here. also, if your book matches any colors, please mark that as well.

message 38: by Cinthia (new)

Cinthia (cinthiah) | 308 comments Also, if someone is not planning on using the spreadsheet, just create a completion post here in the thread and one of us can add it to the spreadsheet. This is a good format:

Book title:
Author:
Date read:
Uno cards this fits:

Here's an example with one of my books that's already on the spreadsheet, so anyone who's playing for the first time can have a better idea:

Book title: Blood Vow
Author: J.R. Ward
Date read: 2/1
Uno cards this fits:
0 - character Zhadist
2 - 2nd in series
4 - character Fritz
7- character Vishous
8- character Elise
9- setting - New York
SKIP - character Peyton

message 39: by Cinthia (new)

Cinthia (cinthiah) | 308 comments Something else that occurred to me is that we should all occasionally look at other people's books on the spreadsheet, and if it's something you've read before you should add your name to the 'reverse' section. This would be much easier than going through everyone's threads to see if something has been read before! :)

message 40: by Cinthia (new)

Cinthia (cinthiah) | 308 comments Karla wrote: "I can’t get onto the spreadsheet yet, but you can add me to REVERSE for

Tiffany Oiney_Reads_Another (oiney_reads_another) | 66 comments My library app has purged a bunch of titles! So, I'm waiting to see if Jungle Book audio (just over 3 hours long) comes back soon!! I hate planning ahead with this app lol they do this to me all the time!

message 43: by BarbaraAnn (new)

BarbaraAnn hoopla changes like that as well.

message 44: by Cinthia (new)

Cinthia (cinthiah) | 308 comments I added your books., Karla. You actually only need to list one item for each number, just so we know that the book qualifies for it. So just one name under SKIP is enough. :)

Also, tin eye didn't verify those colors for me. It claims the first book is gray and the second is grey and blue (but it totally looks green to me!). Does anyone else get a different result? I'm pretty sure the colors have to be verified by tineye for this challenge, right?

message 45: by Cinthia (new)

Cinthia (cinthiah) | 308 comments Karla wrote: "And I’m sorry! Our Captain last year just wanted everything listed that the book could be used for just in case. Just a habit. ☺️🤓"

No worries! And it is a good idea to list everything the book could be used for, but we can only use each thing once, so no need to list a P and K character, for example. But if there are characters with other letters that fit then those should be listed. :)

message 46: by Cinthia (new)

Cinthia (cinthiah) | 308 comments Karla wrote: "What percent of the book has to be the intended color? I have other I can work on for colors sake if we are most worried about the color."

Usually it's more than 50%. I'll try to hunt down the official rules tomorrow to be sure. And we're doing very well with the colors. We only need 3 more yellow books. :)

message 47: by BarbaraAnn (new)

BarbaraAnn Hi - we don't necessarily need to use tineye, but in this case, I'd say the cover is about 50% green and 50% blue so i don't think we can count it for green - to count, it has to be more than 50%.

I'll check and see why you can't access the spreadsheet Karla.

message 48: by Denise (new)

Denise (duckiedee) | 83 comments Good morning - I'm terrible at reading the spreadsheet and figuring out what we need... can someone tell me what we may still need for the hand and I'll use that to pick out my 2nd book from my TBR pile... I don't think any of my other book club books fit... Thanks!!!

message 49: by BarbaraAnn (new)

BarbaraAnn Hi Denise - if you have anything that matches one of the colors, that would be great - in addition to the colors listed, we have 2 wild draw 4 cards which will match one of the other colors. Otherwise, we're still early enough in the month that anything you read that counts for any of the card will work fine.

message 50: by Cinthia (new)

Cinthia (cinthiah) | 308 comments Also, I'm wondering if some of you may be trying to access the wrong spreadsheet. There's a team one that only the captain has access to, and then the tracking one where we post all of our options.
