Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Welcome everyone!

This is our 6th year of UNO and I can't beleive we are here! From a very small easy challenge we have grown over the years, but what stays the same is that this is a challenge where you can mostly read what you like, but have more fun by getting to know other players and getting great book recommendations.

Our theme this year is futuristic 2020 desserts! I have never made Sabayon, but that will be my goal by the end of the challenge. Doesn't it look delicious?!!

I have sent you all friend requests and will PM you soon with the link to this thread so hopefully we will see you all soon.

As an intro, I live in Sydney, Aus with my husband and 2 boys (7 and 4) and run a HR consulting business which specialises in increasing the engagement and performance of teams. I read almost everything except Horror, and I'm not a massive Romance reader.

I look forward to playing with you all!

P.S Don't forget to create your UNO shelf if you haven't already

=====

Important

*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Friday 1 Feb, 2020 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time).

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

*For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour. You can ask us in this thread for our opinion, or use this to get an idea. If in doubt, ask me or Paulette as we can check it and/or take to the captains group for another opinion

* This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Our is now available, and also linked above.

Feel free to add your books here that you will be reading (not required, but some people find it handy).

Otherwise that spreadsheet is the place you will be posting your read books. Then you just need to comment in this thread that you have completed a book and confirm it is on the sheet.
If you can't access the sheet for any reason, just post your read book here with all the information possible so we can add it for you

Hey there!
When I first saw our team name I thought, “what the heck is that?. Now I’m drooling over here! I love to bake too, so I might have to make that my goal as well, Karen! I’d love to see your results! :D
My name is Sisa and I live in San Antonio, Texas. 2019 was my first time playing Uno and I loved it! Last year I deleted my ŷ account because I wanted to spend less time on the internet and my devices, and then in December I remembered Uno. Well, I couldn’t let myself miss out on all of this fun, so here I am! If my ŷ profile looks very bare bones, it’s because I made it to play Uno! :P
I love books, and I have always been an avid reader! I frequent book shops and libraries and often times wish I could just hit the pause button on my life so I could curl up in bed with my books. Right now my life is pretty busy. I’m a stay-at-home mom with my 3-year-old daughter, so most of my time is dedicated to her. I am also very active in a women’s hiking group in my area, so that takes up another chunk of my time. I gave myself a goal of reading about 2 books a month for this game, because that’s what I’ve been averaging with my schedule lately. Hopefully I can manage more than that, because I’d love an excuse to dedicate more time to reading. Also, I’m a part of a meetup book club, so one of my books each month is set in stone. February’s selection is “The Nickle Boys by Colson Whitehead, which might work for a Red card? :D.
Anyways, I’m excited to meet everyone else on our team and get to reading! February can’t come soon enough! Haha

Kate Phillips Hello Everyone!
My name is Kate and I’m from Mankato, Minnesota. We just had our first blizzard of the new year, so enjoying all the snow. This is my first year doing UNO. I almost committed to it last year, but had a newborn, so decided to wait. I didn’t want to let another year go by without joining, so here I am!

I grew up loving to read books. When I would do well in school, or do something well at home, my parents would reward me with books, which probably is what started my obsession. My favorite are historical non-fiction, memoirs, and mystery, although I’m always open to reading anything that catches my eye.

I currently work for a car dealership doing payroll. I have been married to my college sweetheart for 5 years and we have an amazing 17 month old who keeps us on our toes. We also have 2 rescue dogs, one from Alabama and one from Texas.

I am looking forward to reading new books, having fun and getting to know you all more as well!

Deb (deb1902) | 67 comments Hello everyone
My name is Deb, I live in a small beachside town in South Australia (Wallaroo). This is my first reading challenge of any kind, so am very excited to expand my reading and make some new online book friends.

We have two daughters, 20 and 18 (the 18 year old is on a rowing scholarship in Dallas, so looking forward to a US visit soon).

I love reading although didn't do much whilst the girls were young but getting back into it now. I read many different genres, but do enjoy a good mystery/thriller.

I have my own business (commercial finance broking, specialising in agriculture finance).

Looking forward to this challenge and getting you know you all.

Have a great day!! Deb

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Hi everyone, Lisa checking in.

I am Mum of 3 and grandma of soon to be 5 gorgeous little people. I do admin for our farming business and also am a full time carer for my adult son with autism. So a pretty busy life.

Other than my family, my passions are reading ANYTHING and also planning and going on holidays. This year my big trip is to Cornwall and Wales in the UK, which I'm very excited about.

This is my 5th year playing UNO (in Karen's team, we actually won one year) but it's all for fun . I love finding the tricky colour covers, the mini challenges and chatting in this thread.

Amanda A | 290 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Amanda and I live in South Carolina. I work full time as an accountant for a school district. I am single with no kids and I have one Yorkie who is very spoiled. I also have a large family that I enjoy spending time with. I like to read a variety of genres, except for Horror. Although I have read some Horror for a challenge when needed.

I have played every round of UNO so far and love the challenge. Looking forward to playing this round with all of you!

lol! I really like simple desserts that aren't too sweet, so I'm hoping it is right up my alley :o

I love that you remade a goodreads account to join uno! xD

The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead looks more than half read to me. What do you all think? Then we just need to see if it fits 0, 1, and/or 8

Everything I know about Minnesota is from books/TV/movies which portray it as a kind of quirky place (think Fargo!). What are your thoughts? Is it just because of all that snow?!

It is 41c here today so Lisa and I no doubt are in the complete opposite to what you are experiencing. So glad you could come back to uno this year!

In May, Karen. I've been wanting to go to Cornwall since I watched the first version of Poldark eons ago. And also a big fan of Doc Martin. Finally getting there this year.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments So.. coloured cards. This is what I've got so far..

Green 7 - Potion Problem (Halloween Helper's Cozy Mystery, #1) by Linnea West
Red 1 - Omens (Cainsville, #1) by Kelley Armstrong
Yellow - 8 The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren
Blue 3 - Murder on Black Swan Lane (A Wrexford & Sloane Mystery, #1) by Andrea Penrose or The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tassel A Story of Sleepy Hollow by Alyssa Palombo

Do you want me to save mine for next month? I got it from Lane Cove Library and have 3 weeks and then can extend as long as no one else wants it. Always good to have a few yellows up our sleeves.

Edited to say.. I just realised we have Draw Fours - so we can both read it and use it this round.

I have the audio on loan, and I just checked... it is good for 14 days. So I will have to get through it in the first week of UNO :o (5 people are waiting for it). Yes, we can both use it with the WD4, or you never know we may find a sneaky 7 in there somewhere!

If so, it would work for Red 8 the main character’s name is Elwood. :)

Hi Jo! :)
I felt the same way last year, but after we started playing it was pretty easy to catch on. It helped that I copied these down on a cheat sheet for quick reference, but by the end I had them memorized.

0 - standalone/Z
1 - O
2 - T
3 - H
4 - F
5 - I
6 - S
7 - V
8 - E
9 - N
Skip - K/P

The numbers can also be used if it’s that number in a series or the number appears in the title, but that’s pretty easy to spot or remember. I found the letters the most challenging bit to remember, so that’s what I made the cheat sheet for. :)

Amanda A | 290 comments Here is what I have that would work for remaining colored cards:

7 Yellow - Love Her or Lose Her (Hot Hammered #2) by Tessa Bailey MC last name Vega

8 Red (duplicate) - Broken Juliet (Starcrossed, #2) by Leisa Rayven MC Ethan

3 Blue (duplicate) - Miss Frost Saves The Sandman A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost, #3) by Kristen Painter

ETA: I also have One of Us Is Next (One of Us Is Lying, #2) by Karen M. McManus which works for a duplicate of 1 Red, if needed. Or I could save it for later.

Thanks Amanda! I'll move around Sisa's book for 8 Red as it also works for 0 Red and that way we can use your "One of us is next" :)

0 Red Sisa - The Nickel Boys (also works for 8)
1 Red Lisa - Omens
8 Red Amanda - 8 Red - Broken Juliet
3 Blue Lisa
7 Green Lisa - Potion Problem
7 Yellow Amanda - Love her or lose her
8 Yellow Lisa - Unhoneymooners
Duplicate 1 Karen - 8 Yellow - unhoneymooners
Duplicate 2 Amanda - 3 blue - miss frost
Duplicate 3 Amanda - 1 Red - One of us is next

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Jo, we're all the same when we start these challenges. It all seems a bit daunting but after a while you'll get the hang of it. The object is to have fun.. although it does get addictive for some people.. (blush).

Speaking of which... I have another Red 0 book if we need it. The Hawley Book of the Dead by Chrysler Szarlan . But I'll hold off on putting it on the spreadsheet till everyone has had a look at the colour cards.

I will be back home in Melbourne Australia on Sunday. Looking forward to UNO again and getting to know you all. I love to read and on average between 15-20 books a month. I love thrillers and crime.. 😊

I'm just getting into crime and thrillers. I love Sandra Brown and Karin Slaughter. And currently working my way through Karen Rose.

Stephanie (stephreadsnnc) | 183 comments Hi hello sorry I'm late. This weekend was my daughter's 10th birthday. She had a sleepover and I lost sleep lol I'm here and ready to read :) I'm going over the information now

Oh before I forget my name is Stephanie! I love to read anything and everything, but I tend to gravitate towards the Urban Paranormal genre and science fiction. I have two kids who are now 12 and 10 as of a couple of days now 0.0. I am engaged to a wonderful man who has had my heart since we were in the 9th grade <3

I am currently enrolled in the community college here in NC where I will be going after my LPN degree. I have an obsession with art, Tim Burton and Edgar Allen Poe. I find myself in total relaxation on the Carolina Coasts and am so looking forward to my already booked and paid for week vacation coming this June. This is basically me in a nutshell. I look forward to working and reading with all of you guys!

If your book works for one of the colored cards that I am committed to, you can have it. I will probably be reading the book anyway, but we don't have to use it for a colored card.

ETA: The list of colored cards is in message 8.
