Laura | 2892 comments Welcome, team Science Brioche!

I’m so happy to be playing with all of you. A little about myself. I live in Southern California, where I homeschool my 6 daughters. We have 5 cats and 15 chickens.

Tatiana Davis | 66 comments Hello Everyone! I’m excited to be doing UNO again! I had fun last year. I’m Tatiana, married with 4 kids. I try to read 3 or 4 books a month but it usually ends up being about 2. I plan to read the testaments for my first book which would work for either of the green cards.

message 11: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 338 comments Hi everyone! I played UNO last year and enjoyed it. I'm retired, living in North Carolina. I read almost anything but Mystery and Fantasy are my favorites. Looking forward to playing with you all.

message 12: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Hi everyone,

I’m Chris from Nottingham, UK and this will be my second UNO challenge (my last one was in 2017). I love reading historical fiction, fantasy, humour and some crime novels. My main goal this year is to deplete my TBR shelf (it currently stands at 74 books and even though I started depleting it last year I have only managed to get rid of 5 books! I must stop BUYING more books until I have read those ones!).

Anyway, I really only want to use books for UNO that I already have. I will buy one or two if I need to (for the sake of the team) but would rather use what I have.

Nice to meet you all and I’m sure we’ll have great fun in the next three months or so!

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Hey, Diana & teammates! I am pretty sure this is my second year playing UNO & I loved it so I’m back!

I am a retired high school teacher and I taught English for 25 years mostly to freshmen and I taught yearbook for about 18 or 19 years. Since retiring in May 2017 I have done some extensive traveling in the states and Mexico.

I obviously love reading and my favorite genres are mystery/thriller/suspense, historical fiction, romance, and emotional reads! Lol Reading challenges have taken over my life!

I have 20 grandchildren and am expecting my 21st in March. My 5th great grandchild (a girl) was just born yesterday, January 21. 💕💕💕

I look forward to getting to know all of you!

Diana, thanks for the countdown clock! :)

Since I’m here let me say Hi 👋🏻 everyone! Good luck to all of you! 😊

Are you reading the same edition that is on your Want-to-Read shelf? If so, I'm afraid that one has too much blue to count for either blue or green. :(

Do you have an Uno shelf for the challenge?

We can just blame it on a ŷ glitch! They've been happening so frequently lately. :)

Good luck to you, too!

No need to buy stuff just for the challenge! I have a lot of libraries that I can access, as well as Kindle Unlimited, so I can almost always find a book to cover any task. And I've played with Jackie before, so I know she's pretty willing to find what needs to be found.

I'm assuming that those 74 books are all books you own but haven't read? My TBR contains every book I've looked at and thought, "That could be good" since I joined ŷ. It's currently sitting at over 1800 books!

message 19: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Please take a look at the top few posts here. The first post has a link to our team spreadsheet. My first post (#5) has a link to a tracking spreadsheet that we can use. You all can either add your books to the spreadsheet, or post them here. Just let us know when you post what cards it works for. The more info we have, the more flexible we can be if we need to move things around.

My second post has info on our February color cards. I always find it helpful to get those locked down pretty quickly, as they can be the most difficult to fill.

message 20: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 338 comments Hi Laura! So good to be playing together again!

Between the library and Kindle Unlimited, I can usually find anything needed, and as I mentioned, I will read just about anything. I find the most fun is in finding books to fit tasks. And with the size of my TBR, there's usually something on it to fit. :)

message 21: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana Davis | 66 comments Oh ok. Whatever you think. I looked it up on tineye and it was over 50% green. That was the standard last I played but maybe it’s changed? Are we using tineye this time? If it doesn’t work we can fit it elsewhere I’m sure..

message 22: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments I am planning to read Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman and it covers Blue 1.

I am also planning to read Ready Player One (Ready Player One, #1) by Ernest Cline which works for Red 9, google lists one of the characters as Nolan. I have never read it.

Melissa Mcmahon | 90 comments Hi Team! My name is Melissa, and I live in Canada with one son and two cats. My favorite genres are fantasy, historical fiction, and mystery/thriller this is my first time playing Uno or a team challenge.
I am looking forward to getting started :)

Chris | 190 comments Laura wrote: "No need to buy stuff just for the challenge! I have a lot of libraries that I can access"

Unfortunately, I don't. Our library is so small you have to go outside to change your mind. Although we do have one about 10 miles away, I have been to quieter building sites! They even have a crêche! But I suppose if I'm only going to borrow books I can take my ear buds.

"as well as Kindle Unlimited"

I actually never thought of this! D'OH!

"I'm assuming that those 74 books are all books you own but haven't read? My TBR contains every book I've looked at and thought, "That could be good" since I joined ŷ. It's currently sitting at over 1800 books!"

1800?! Does you doctor know about this addiction? Haha. That is insane! Have you ever looked in the mirror and said "My name is Laura and I'm a bookaholic."? Trust me, it helps. Haha.

Do you also have the addiction I have of not bothering to read the blurb on the back and just go for the book because of the pretty cover? I have read soooo many crappy books because of that. The Essex Serpent is a prime example. Beautiful cover. Awful read.

ė (ek77) Hi everybody!

I am Egle, I am from Lithuania (Europe), this is my first time playing UNO in goodreads.
Little about myself - I am an IT student (will graduate this year) and I work with advertising. I am able to communicate in four languages (Lithuanian, English, Russian and German (I am taking courses of last two very recently)).

I like sci-fi, classics, post-apocalyptic novels, science books and right now, I am inlove with E. M. Remarque.

It's incredibly nice to e-meet you all!

P.S. soooo what we should read this month or everything starts from February? I am familiar with classic UNO, so I need some info to understand this game better :)

message 26: by Jennifer (last edited Jan 23, 2020 09:05AM) (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments Hello! I've played UNO a few times and loved it! Unfortunately some years life gets in the way and I wasn't able to play.

I'm an accountant and paralegal and live in North Dakota so winters are pretty miserable and no better time to curl up with good books. When I'm doing challenges I tend to get a bit obsessive.

Last year I made myself go a whole year without buying or borrowing a book. The goal was to read down my piles I have everywhere. I did make it a whole year but I also didn't read much so it didn't really work I guess. I was pretty proud of myself for being able to go a whole year though because things were getting pretty out of hand.

message 27: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments One of the books on my soon TBR is
There Will Be Lies by Nick Lake
which would work for the Yellow 6 or 2.

We don't use Tineye. We use human eyes! If you post it here and we have any questions, I will ask about it in the Captain's group. The decisions of the captains on colors is final. I'll ask about yours!

I'm asking in the captain's group, because I know people have asked about Ready Player One in past years. Also, excellent book! It was, of course, much better than the movie!

We were all new at some point. Actually, Uno was my first team challenge, too.

Unfortunately, my ŷ friends are enablers. My TBR is tame compared to some! Team challenges, especially, are bad for my TBR. I'll be looking at everything you all read!

I'm more likely to trust the author without reading the blurb, rather than the cover. I have been know to pre-order a book from a favorite author, and then when I get it I'm surprised by which series it's in! (I'm looking at Ilona Andrews here!) Although I did pick up Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate based on the cover, and it's really not worth it!

Laura | 2892 comments ė wrote: "P.S. soooo what we should read this month or everything starts from February? I am familiar with classic UNO, so I need some info to understand this game better :)"

The challenge starts February 1st. Books have to be started after the official start time to count. In March & April, we can use books started in the previous month, but all books used in the entire 3 months must be started on/after February 1st.

- Note, the start time is Australian, so it may not be midnight on Feb. 1 for you!

One of the things I love about Uno is that you can read just about anything! Our co-captains and I will fit them all in. Just let us know the characters that fit for the cards, and we'll slot everything in.
(The rules, in case you need a refresher)

We usually get a mini-challenge about the middle of the month. That will require more specific books, but we can usually still fit all books in there, too.

The consensus in the Captain's group is that it doesn't work for Green. When you use tineye, there is a default box that is checked, "Exclude background color from extracted colors." You have to uncheck that in order to have it see the blue background. When you do that, it's over 50% blue. So I'll put you down for the Blue 2!

The captains say Eleanor Oliphant is not blue enough.

Also, there wasn't really a consensus on Ready Player One until Karen searched through previous year's spreadsheet and found it was used for yellow. I'll put it down for the Yellow 6.

Okay that is fine! I think the rest of my soon TBR won't work for colors, but I make regular library trips. Once we know what colors nobody has mentioned I will pick up one for that card.

message 37: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments I also just realized my Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4) by J.K. Rowling audiobook is going to come off hold in the next week. It has this cover and character Olympe Maxime!

message 38: by ė (new)

ė (ek77) Did I understand correctly? Would it be OK if I read this book? (should the cover be of an English book?)

Green 7 - /book/show/4...
it is set in Vienna (and Prague, but hey, VIENNA! haha)

Is this a good book or should I change it?

message 39: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments That works! It doesn’t have to be in English, if you’re not reading it in English.

message 40: by Eli (new)

Eli (kongshavn) Hi,

I’m Eli (Ellie), first time playing UNO. I’m a physiotherapist from Norway. Love to read, and I’m quite competitive when it comes to games/challenges, so I really look forward to participate.

message 41: by Eli (new)

Eli (kongshavn) I’m planing to read “Harry Potter and the deathly hollows. The kindle edition is green and it’s the 7th in the series (+ a character starts with V, Voldemort).

First time playing, so do I understand the game correctly?

message 42: by Chris (last edited Jan 24, 2020 02:34PM) (new)

Chris | 190 comments I don't know who is in charge of permissions for the team spreadsheet but I have just asked for permission to edit it so that I can add my book. Thank you :-)

I think it may be you, Laura.

message 43: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Chris, you should be able to edit the tracking spreadsheet, but the official spreadsheet is updated by the captains. That is me, with Jennifer and Chelsey being the co-captains.

message 44: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Oh, OK. I've looked at the tracking spreadsheet but it's blank and I don't know where to put anything so just put me down for number 9 in hand one for Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman as it falls under either title beginning with N or author's first name.

message 45: by Eli (new)

Eli (kongshavn) I cannot edit the tracking spreadsheet either. If Red 9 still available, I’d like to read “Wundersmith by Jessica Townsend

message 46: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Ah. Glad it's not just me then! Haha. I've been trying to figure it out for the last 45 minutes lol

message 47: by Laura (new)

message 48: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Thank you, Laura.

message 49: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments I don't know what's up with the tracking spreadsheet, because I have it set to allow anyone with the link to edit. Can you guys try again?

message 50: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Mcmahon | 90 comments I'll read A Curse So Dark and Lonely (Cursebreakers, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer , for Blue 1, if it hasn't already been covered.
