Ben Rowe (benwickens) | 13 comments Worlds without end also have the interesting list the HWA list as well - could be an alternative or done in tandem or just an interesting list for people to look at

I am slowly trying to make my way through some of the Nightmare list although if I read a short story by someone and dont like it I probably wont read through the whole collection, equally will just dip my toe into some of the anthologies listed.

I may try this for 2015. there is some on the nightmare list that I've already read but at least I won't have to stand in front of my book shelf trying to decide what to read!

message 20: by John (new)

John (frayerbanac) | 336 comments I agree, Latasha. The list is pretty solid and saves one from searching bookshelves for inspiration. It's so much easier to run an index finger down a column of print. I've certainly read at least half of them and it will be fun to discover some good reads among those which I haven't.

message 21: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (littlemissred3) | 252 comments That's quite a list and I've read several of them, but I'll try and pick some of them.

No, usually you pick the number of books you want to read from the list; track which ones you read, either on a separate Ε·±¦ΣιΐΦ shelf or in a post on the challenge thread; and, at the end of the year, see whether you reached your goal.

If you go to the 2014 challenge thread you can sort of see how it works. For example, I picked 20 as my goal, 10 from each of the two lists everyone decided we should use, and then listed them as I completed each one. On the Horror Aficionados homepage there is a shortlink to the challenge's official page. I hope you decide to join us next year!

message 33: by Emily (last edited May 05, 2015 05:28PM) (new)

Emily (hypnokittie) | 12 comments I'll shoot for 10 total using all of them, but I want to read at least 3 from that indie list. I'm not familiar with any of those. And this is my spot!

1. Silence of the Lambs - Thomas Harris (5 stars)
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

message 35: by Myst (last edited Aug 31, 2015 12:47PM) (new)

Myst | 408 comments I'm aiming for 5 of the following. Too many other backlogged books on the tbr to devote more time to this challenge and some of these are massive bricks of books.

Complete 6/5

Ghost Story by Peter Straub
I am Legend

Cujo
It
Christine
Heart Shaped Box
Horns
The Historian
20th Century Ghosts
Night Shift

Edit: A book for a different group read appears to be on the lists of choices so:
The Island of Dr. Moreau

2. From the Dust Returned by Ray Bradbury

message 38: by John (new)

John (frayerbanac) | 336 comments Myst, I take it you haven't read 20th Century Ghosts and Night Shift before? I envy you. For collections of short stories in the genre, they're hard to beat.

message 39: by Nikki (last edited Mar 06, 2015 08:18PM) (new)

Nikki (nikkisez) I'm going for 24 horror books, mostly from the Nightmare list above as well as Bram Stoker award winners, all written by women.

1. The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson - completed 1/10/15 -- 3.5 stars
2. Hotel Transylvania - Chelsea Quinn Yarbro - completed 1/18/15 -- 2 stars
3. Those That Hunt the Night - Barbara Hambly - completed 2/2/15 -- 3 stars
4. Sunglasses After Dark - Nancy A Collins -- completed 2/7/15 -- 4 stars
5. The Cipher - Kathe Koja -- completed 2/15/15 -- 1 star

message 41: by Deborah (last edited Dec 21, 2015 06:51AM) (new)

Deborah (brandiec) | 229 comments I've decided to go for 12 on the Nightmare list, one per month (not necessarily in this order):

1. The Red Tree, by Caitlin R. Kiernan (4 stars; completed 4/5/15)
2. The Keeper, by Sarah Langan (4 stars; completed 2/17/15)
3. The Missing, by Sarah Langan (4 stars; completed 6/13/15)
4. Zombie, by Joyce Carol Oates (1 star; completed 12/6/15)
5. Summer of Night, by Dan Simmons (4 stars; completed 7/13/15)
6. From the Dust Returned, by Ray Bradbury (2 stars; completed 10/18/15)
7. My Soul to Keep, by Tananarive Due (3 stars; completed 5/10/15)
8. Just an Ordinary Day, by Shirley Jackson (3.5 stars; completed 9/5/15)
9. A Choir of Ill Children, by Tom Piccirilli (4 stars; completed 1/19/15)
10. The Terror, by Dan Simmons
11. Floating Dragon, by Peter Straub (4 stars; completed 3/7/15)
12. Drawing Blood, by Poppy Z. Brite (5 stars; completed 8/6/15)

I'm afraid my last book, Dan Simmons's The Terror, is going to prevent me from completing this challenge. I'm about 10% of the way in and bored to death.

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments Question: Is it bad form to just pick a number of books now and then add books to the shelf as I go along rather than selecting specific books up-front? I tend to be pretty fickle and change my mind a lot, and I suppose in one sense that makes something like this good because it forces me to stick to a decision :-), but I'm curious. I've actually read more than I would have expected from the Nightmare list. Haven't checked out the other lists yet. This might be a good chance to pick some things that have been on my TBR list a long time and that I've just never gotten around to reading.
