Liz | 2 comments Hi, first post here. I am a huge lover of historical fiction and non-fiction from all eras. However recently I've been reading the call the midwife series, the baby laundry for unmarried mothers and currently reading every mother's fear. You can see there is a theme in my interest at the moment: pregnancy and motherhood. Now the books I've read so far have been great, don't get me wrong, especially those set in the 1960's because that's when my grandma, an unmarried mother, had my mum and fascinating comparing the differences in opinions to now. But what I'd like to read more of is one set in the 1980's when I was born to see pregnancy and motherhood in that decade and compare it to my experience of parenting in the 00's. Can anyone recommend a book fiction or nonfiction that is set in the 1980's and has the theme of pregnancy and motherhood in it???

Fiona Hurley (fiona_hurley) | 292 comments I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan was written in 1989 and has a theme of motherhood, contrasting Chinese immigrant mothers and their American daughters.

The Bean Trees by by Barbara Kingsolver (published 1988) is about a young woman who inadvertently adopts a child.

Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts takes place partly in the 1980s,
