Welcome to the 21st Century Literature group! The description below our banner should give you an idea of the kind of books we read here. Here’s some more information on the nuts and bolts of how this group works.

Most months, we read two works of fiction. One is selected by the moderators (the Moderator Pick), and the other is selected by an open poll of our members (the Open Pick). In addition to the Open and Moderator Picks, every three months we also have a Wild Card. The purpose of the Wild Card is to open things up to books that may be considered more ‘genre and therefore fall outside our usual selections. More on the Wild Card can be found here: The Wild Card.

Here is the schedule for when the nominations open, when the polls go up, and when the discussions start. This is a general guide, actual dates may very by a few days. The nomination thread is always placed in the What to Read folder, and the polls can be found from the group homepage.

Open Pick:
Nominations open the 15th of every month and stay open for one week before the poll goes up. The poll is up for one week before the winner is announced, which is 30 days before the start of the discussion. So, for example, nominations for the May Open Pick start on March 15th, poll goes up March 22nd, poll closes and winner is announced April 1st.

Wild Card:
Discussions for the Wild Card start on the 15th of Jan, April, July, and October. Nominations open on the 1st of the prior month (December, March, June, and September). Like the Open Pick, nominations and the polls are open for a week each.

The Moderator Pick discussion starts on the 15th of every month, and the title is usually announced at least 30 days in advance.

Nominated books must have been originally published (in any language) in 2000 or later, and also have to have been published in English at least one year prior to the discussion date.

We do not send out broadcast messages when nominations or polls are opened but post announcements on a new thread, so keep an eye out. The rule is that if you nominate or vote for a book and it wins, you will read the book and join in the discussion. No one is expected to make profound and deeply insightful comments (although those are always welcome). Our goal is to read good books and have a good time discussing them. Even a short post such as “really enjoyed this book is welcome participation. While discussions have official start dates, people can comment anytime, even months later. Feel free to revive previous discussions if you read something we’ve discussed in the past.

If you’re a new member, please post a ‘hello in the “Introduce Yourself Here thread. There is also a thread in this folder for asking any questions you may have about the group. You are also welcome to send a private message to the moderators with questions or concerns that you want to be less public.

The “Book Chat folder is for posting any interesting things relating to 21st century books and reading, such as awards, interesting articles, etc. This folder is NOT for anything resembling a promotion; those posts belong in the “Promote Yourself or Others Here! folder, and nowhere else. There is also a “General folder is for random things relating to this group.

Things to keep in mind when posting.
1. Please provide Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ links when you post a book title. Please select “linkâ€ not “coverâ€ when adding books.
2. The usual rules apply about civility and avoiding personal attacks; I think we all know them by now. The moderators will intervene if things get too hot, but thankfully that is not something that happens much around here.
3. Please be very careful about spoilers, everyone has a different definition of what that may mean to them. If there is any doubt, post your comments in a thread that specifically states spoilers are allowed.
4. This is your group. Have fun.
