Welcome back for our second round of suggestions!

Just a reminder that you can find a full list of prompts already on the 2021 list in the third post on this thread.

A little reminder of how things are done around here:

How it works:
- The topics for the 2020 reading challenge list will be determined by a series of mini-polls, the number of which depends on the number of prompts winning in each mini-polls
- Suggestions for each poll will be opened until 15 suggestions are received and “seconded.
- The voting thread will open the day after suggestions go live. You can find the schedule here.
- The poll will be posted after the voting thread is opened for 24 hours, and will remain open for three full days.
- Each user has 8 votes to spread between their favorite (top) and least favorite (bottom) prompts
- The prompts with the more favorable votes (comparing top votes to bottom votes, and looking at the overall number of votes it received) will be added to the final list (between 2 and 5 depending on how the votes are spread)

Rules:
- Each member can only suggest OR second one prompt
- Suggestions close after 15 total seconded prompts

When suggesting and seconding, feel free to provide examples and descriptions that may help other members understand the prompt better. These descriptions and examples will be copied over to the voting thread for further discussion.

As always, please express any and all feedback (respectfully, of course), either here or in The Wild Discussion.

I am stepping away from my computer for a little while, but will be back in a few hours to update the first post!

message 3: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 477 comments I would like to suggest:

A book related to one of the United Nations 2021 "International Year" themes (Peace & Trust, Creative Economy for Sustainable Development, Fruits & Vegetables, and Elimination of Child Labor).

A book whose title contains a negative (No, Not, Never, Nobody, Can't, Don't, etc.)

Note - If you read in other languages, equivalent negative words in any language count

message 5: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1132 comments I’ve been thinking about prompts that would be easy to fill with either fiction or nonfiction, and come up with:
A book with a focus on the natural world

This would include animals and plants, the oceans or atmosphere, the earth itself, the cosmos, the microbial world...

Sounds like that could include fiction likeWhere the Crawdads Sing or The Signature of All Things among others.

Yep, and I’d give my highest recommendation to The Overstory, but probably go with nonfiction myself.

message 9: by Steve (new)

Steve | 615 comments A lot of people liked the "We Didn't Start the Fire" prompt this year.

How about.... "A book related to Don McLean's 'American Pie'"?

Here's a link to the lyrics:

The song contains many explicit and implied references to cultural concepts, especially musical. "(John) Lennon read a book on (Karl) Marx"; "the quartet (The Beatles) practiced in the park"; "the day the music died" (the plane crash of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper"). There are also biblical references in parts.

If anyone has ever been part of Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth, this prompt's for you especially.

message 10: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments A book with a day of the week or a month in the title.

message 11: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments How about a book related to a generation that you don’t belong to.

message 12: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments I second A book whose title contains a negative (No, Not, Never, Nobody, Can't, Don't, etc.)

message 13: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) Since so many things have been cancelled or postponed because of the virus (i.e. the Olympics), a prompt dealing with second chances. Could be a plot that involves a second chance (divorce, relocation, going home again, etc.), a book you failed to finish that you are giving a second chance, or one you are reading a second time, or an author you are reading for the second time.

message 14: by Brandee (new)

Brandee | 8 comments I second "a title containing a negative" and "a book with a day of the week or a month in the title"

message 15: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments What about a book published before you were born?

message 16: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments I will second: "A book with a focus on the natural world"

message 17: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 592 comments I suggest a book containing illustrations that isn’t a graphic novel.

message 18: by Avery (new)

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments Oh I love so many of these already - I'm ready to vote! Negative, Natural world, second chances, 2021 international year, illustrations... I think I'll wait to see if others second some of these and if not I'll second one of them!

message 19: by Taylor (new)

Taylor Price | 14 comments I second the second chances prompt suggestion.

message 20: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1470 comments A fiction or nonfiction book related to mental health. May is Mental Health Awareness Month & Saturday October 10 is World Mental Health Day. The book can be related to mental health in any way. Memoir, True Crime, Short Stories, the psychology behind something.

message 21: by Conny (last edited Jul 07, 2020 09:49AM) (new)

Conny | 638 comments I am suggesting (and will explain below):

A book written by someone no more than two degrees of separation away from you

As a reminder, you are one degree away from everyone you know, two degrees away from everyone they know, and so on. If we consider everyone in this group to be one degree away from each other, it will follow that you are two degrees away from any author/writer whom any group member here has ever met, and can choose from all those authors for this prompt. And guess what, we have started a list to collect all those one-degree connections:

/topic/show/...

To sum up, for this prompt you could read a book by
- any author whom you have met personally or had a meaningful interaction with, e.g. on social media (must include a personal conversation/comment, not just the author clicking Like on a comment you made),
- any author whom someone you know has met (same conditions as above), or
- any author on the list above, comprising authors whom our fellow group members have met. Which is cool, because it features loads of international and indie authors but also a good deal of famous names.

You do not need to reach out to, or have met, any authors yourself to fulfill this prompt.

Example: I've met Austrian author Ursula Poznanski in person at a signing, and I've corresponded personally with Sharon Bolton on Facebook (by private message). So everyone in this group is, through me, two degrees of separation away from these two authors and could read anything by either one of them.

Suzanne | 349 comments I suggest a book where the author has the same first and last initial as you.

Milena (milenas) | 760 comments I will second a book related to mental health.

Brandee wrote: "I second "a title containing a negative" and "a book with a day of the week or a month in the title""

Brandee you can only suggest or second *one* prompt per poll; since title containing a negative was already seconded, I used yours for a book w/ a day of the week or month in the title.

message 27: by Avery (new)

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments I'll second same first and last initial! Agreed with Ellie, there are already too many good suggestions!! I'm already thinking I'll only upvote this round!

so sorry. I didn't realize that. Thanks for letting me know :)

message 29: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments I will second the 2 degrees of separation prompt.

We will have to do a list (if this prompt wins) of any authors we all know or have spoken to so everyone has even more options.

message 30: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Ok, I see I got beat out! I will take my vote back for now. lol

That one's already been seconded, so you are free to second or suggest something else.

People have already been compiling quite a sizeable list over in another thread which has been fascinating to look through.

message 32: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2037 comments I will second the American Pie prompt.

message 33: by Lin (last edited Jul 07, 2020 10:18AM) (new)

Lin (linnola) | 556 comments I would like to suggest a book with an animal on the cover. The book doesn't need to be about the animal, any animal on the cover will work. This could be a fiction or non-fiction read.

In the last year or so I've read Dewey The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron and A Dog's Purpose (A Dog's Purpose, #1) by W. Bruce Cameron

Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ has a bunch of lists with different animals
Non-Fiction - Favorite Animal - /list/show/1...
Mostly Fiction, some Non-Fiction -Butterflies - /list/show/3...

message 34: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments I will second a book published before you were born.

If it makes the list, it will hopefully give me the push I need to read some of the older books on my TBR rather than reaching for the newest titles.

message 38: by Lin (new)

Lin (linnola) | 556 comments Joyce wrote: "I suggest a book containing illustrations that isn’t a graphic novel."

Would a hand drawn map be an illustration or does it need to be a picture?

°Õ±ð°ùé³ú¾±²¹ (tereziatt) | 11 comments I suggest a book with a long title (6+ words)

message 40: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1729 comments I suggest A book from our best of book of the month thread. There is a wide selection suggested.

message 41: by Juliet (new)

Juliet Brown | 255 comments I suggest A retelling of a ‘classic by a BIPOC author

message 42: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3248 comments I second a book related to a generation that you don’t belong to

°´Ê´¡³¾²â´Ê° (amybooksit) I suggest a book that you consider to be Brain Candy

Brain Candy is a book that is fun to read but not necessarily intellectually stimulating, also often referred to as "fluff" reads.

°´Ê´¡³¾²â´Ê° (amybooksit) And not to be a downer, but Don McLean has recently lost some of his rewards and such due to a domestic violence situation against his wife. Not sure if that effects the suggestion or not.
