Shelly | 912 comments April 29, 1986 is the date of the fire at the LA Central Library. The book uses the fire as the "centerpiece" of the book, but it is about so much more. The book tells the history of the LA Central Library and how it fits into the LA library system as a whole. But woven into the book are histories of libraries in general, the destruction/burning of books through history, and the services libraries provide to the communities they serve, beyond loaning books. As much as I enjoyed reading about the fire and how books were saved by freezing them to try to save them from mold, I also felt buoyed by the descriptions of how the modern library has reinvented itself as an information hub and community resource. Reading it while the libraries are "closed" and yet still providing programming and resources during the pandemic made it even more relevant. I think anyone who loves libraries and books will enjoy this book.
