Don't you hate it when that happens?!😉😂

MUST.HAVE.BOOKS!

Pien | 601 comments I’ve finished this book (somehow Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ thinks I read it twice, but nope) and it wasn’t what I expected from a Grisham at all.
My review has big spoilers so beware! I gave it two stars.
It’s a taste thing though, someone else might love it.

Sue | 41 comments I shan’t read your review at the moment then Pien, I’ll hold off for now, but I must say I am struggling with this. I felt indifferent about the main character in the first half and was relieved I had moved on to the second half. Perhaps I will become emotionally involved later in the book once it starts to come together more. I hope so.

I am at 60% and completely loving it, lol, see ya later Snails 👻📚

Sue | 41 comments Oh wow, that’s great news Aya! Looking forward to finding out more 😀

Pien | 601 comments It’s great to hear you love it so much Aya! It has gotten a lot of stars so I think there must be more ‘lovers dan ‘haters.
Looking forward to your review!

Not done yet, I am kind of saving the moment because I like it so much, I don´t want it to end - well we know the end, don´t we. That is also a cool way to write a book - so now the why!

Pien, if this is unexpected from a Grisham, then I think I am going to love his other books a well, saw some of the movies based on his books, but never read him before - he might be a new a favorite yai.

It´s so funny and cool how one can love or hate a book or just be indifferent compared to others - i guess that is one of my reasons for being on GR - and the many many reviews. I do not read them before i read a book though, afraid of spoilers.

SPOILER ALERT - 4,5 stars
Please don´t read this is you haven´t read the book yet - most of what I write is probably spoilers, so I don´t bother with hidden spoiler html.
I finished this, only because other books are waiting and once I sad down with the book it was hard to put it down. I am a big fan of historical fiction and I have also liked some of the films based on his books, so it was a win win for me.
I liked that we are told so much in the beginning and then backflash to WWII - The Bataan Death March - Thrilling story and true, and then back to reality to follow up on a deathsentence - and no.. as much as I tried I did not guess the why?

Funny info - or not! It turns out, according to Grisham, that General MacArthur was not a hero after all - there goes my faith in history books - buuuh!

I was completely into the Pete Banning Character and most of the others as well, and the whole story is just heatbreaking and yet so well written IMO

Take the 5 minutes and read Author Notes, it gives a good sense of the situation as well. I mean, who could have thought this up.

Sue | 41 comments I’m looking forward to reading your write ups on here Pien and Aya, but avoiding them until I’ve finished. I’m at 75% and much happier now, I feel like it is coming together for me and and I’m involved in it now. My husband asked me this morning how’s your book and I told him all that’s happened and as I explained it I thought that all sounds like a really good book! I did read quickly through the second part and war experiences, as I found I struggled with it. Having said that it was impacting with just how cruel and horrendous it was. I’m finding that Grisham is not very descriptive in his writing, sort of just says what needs to be said (if that makes sense) and so I can be reading something which is quite important or a significant event and it’s just sort of in there in an almost monotone way and I’ve needed to re-read it to grasp the significance. Just my experience with it, but glad to say I’m looking forward to a good sunday afternoon read with it today which should finish it.

I agree with the writing style, a man of few words but gets the job done.
