I read Friday Night Lights as well :)

I have The Summer before the War but I was going to use it for the prompt about a season or time of the year.

message 55: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Anderson (miss5elements) | 331 comments I read "All You Can Ever Know" by Nicole Chung. It wasn't hard to find, I just went to the corresponding ATY Listopia list and chose an author I listed as "Want To Read". Recommendation: I would read anything by Louise Erdrich.

I was thinking of putting it there, or the prompt about a love story. It has 3 different types of love, friendship, parental and romantic.

message 57: by Steven (new)

Steven McCreary | 141 comments I read Platform by Michel Houellebecq.

It was the first one on my physical shelf that I saw that fit. I bought it cheap because it's on the 1001 book list, which I'm trying to complete.

It was a weird book. At no point did I think ugh I don't want to keep reading this, but when I got to the end, I realized I didn't enjoy it and didn't think it was very good. Often with books from the 1001 list, or other lists of great books, I don't enjoy them per se, but I can see why they're important or considered great literature. Not so with this one.

I agree - most of the books on that list (or any classic list) are not very good. They've been sold as "excellent" to us since grade school. And maybe because our values have shifted so much.

message 59: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (grapefruit) | 57 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
A book that has been on my TBR for so much time: Night by Elie Wiesel

2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
Since I took into account the full names of authors using initials (such as JoAnne KAThleen Rowling), it was a bit more difficult, but the Listopia listed Night within the first 10 - sold!

3. What book would you recommend to others to read for this category?
The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins!

message 60: by Oyinda (new)

Oyinda (oyindx) | 4 comments This was such a hard one when going through my reads for the year, out of 27 books, only one author fit this prompt - Memory of Stone by Chio Zoe

message 61: by Angela (new)

Angela | 389 comments What are you reading for this category?
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by CS Lewis
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia, #1) by C.S. Lewis

Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
It really was difficult, I didn’t realise how hard it would be.

What book would you recommend to others to read for this category?
Not really!

message 62: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 477 comments I ended up reading It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover by Colleen Hoover.

I didn't find a lot of books that fit the category when looking through my tbr, but between this thread and the listopia I had no trouble finding lots of books I already wanted to read. So glad I ended up going with this one because it was a 5-star read.

Jim Townsend | 19 comments Angie wrote: "For this category, I'm probably going to do The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells. My back up choice might be something from the Harry Potter series. BUT I've been circling I..."

But the book doesn't fit because, using full names, the H.G. stands for Herbert George.

message 64: by Jim (new)

Jim Townsend | 19 comments Good evening!

If one uses full names for initials, C.S. (Clive Staples) Lewis (1899-1963) doesn't fit this prompt. I'm new to this challenge, but I read this prompt first, from January 1-3, 2021, with Travels on a Greyhound Bus by Beckie Henderson Travels on a Greyhound Bus by Beckie Henderson. If she spelled her first name with the letter Y, or didn't use a nickname, I would have needed to find someone else.

message 65: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2831 comments For this prompt, the author’s published name would be what needs to be followed. If someone wanted to make it BIO and go by the author’s full name then they could, but it is not necessary. Just like Nora Roberts would not work but J.D. Robb would count even though it is the same person.

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments What are you reading for this category?
I read Death Comes to Cambers by E.R. Punshon

Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
No. I have quite a few authors who would have fitted.

star_fire13 | 197 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
Punching the Air

2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
Yes and no haha I had fun going through my list for authors. I actually found a couple, but I also found a bunch that I thought would work, but at a second glance, I'd realize they didn't.

3. What book would you recommend to others to read for this category?
Anything by G. Willow Wilson.

message 68: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1377 comments I am reading Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell. It was not hard to find him. I got this book on Audible. So far, it is fascinating. It is easy to see how his experiences shaped his books Animal Farm and 1984. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed those books or who is a history buff.

2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
I had compiled a list of authors from my TBR that would work. A friend recommended this, and I was delighted to realize after finishing that it worked for this prompt!

I ended up using The Gown by Jennifer Robson. I had several others in mind, but this book was chosen by my local book group and I couldn't figure out where to put it until I realized it fit here.

message 73: by Severina (new)

Severina | 377 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?

I read Deadly Ashes by N.C. Lewis
2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt? No - just looked over my TBR
3. What book would you recommend to others to read for this category? Not this one - a cozy mystery with very annoying characters/caricatures. I would recommend Pride by Ibi Zoboi, Bellwetherby Connie Willis, and The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

message 75: by Marie (new)

Marie (marie123) | 93 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
Faking Faith by Josie Bloss

Pride by Ibi Zoboi
Amelia Westlake by Erin Gough
Unpregnant by Jenni Hendriks

message 76: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Peterson | 700 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
Virgil Wander by Leif Enger

2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
A little bit! I really wanted to choose an author whose full name didn't contain the letters, and a bunch of my options were authors who go by initials.

3. What book would you recommend to others to read for this category?
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd is such a sweet childhood classic that I think is well worth reading in adulthood due to how well written it is.
Why Fish Don't Exist: A Story of Loss, Love, and the Hidden Order of Life by Lulu Miller is a nonfiction book I read last year. I really enjoyed the unique combination of biography and memoir and found it to be a very engaging, quirky story.

message 77: by Leah (last edited Apr 03, 2021 01:42AM) (new)

Leah Still | 69 comments I read The Plague of Doves. I found this quite an easy prompt - too many to recommend! Louise Erdich was a new author to me - I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would like to read more by her.

ladymurmur | 541 comments Gail wrote: "Am I being too nit-picky by pointing out that the S in C.S. Lewis stands for Staples? Just asking because I picked out one of his books."

Hi Gail! The nice thing about this challenge is that you get to set the level of nit-picky-ness that you want for yourself. :-) Personally, I would allow C.S. Lewis for this prompt, because he wrote as "C.S. Lewis" , not "Clive Staples Lewis". But that's my take.

If you're interested, there's a whole thread for "KISS (Keep it Simple) or BIO (Bring It On) options for making individual prompts or then entire challenge easier or more challenging.

Not sure what I have read for this category previously so sorry cannot recommend anything. However I have read some Jeeves books by P G Wodehouse previously and can recommend them.

Suzanne | 349 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
Goodnight from London by Jennifer Robson

2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
No, but for some reason I have to double check the names several times to make sure I'm not missing something! There were several options on my TBR that worked.

3. What book would you recommend to others to read for this category?
I don't recommend this book but I really enjoyed her book The Gown. Other authors I see on my TBR without ATY are: Jess Kidd, Robinne Lee, and Josie Silver.

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1823 comments Nancy wrote: "Possibilities from my TBR are Things in Jars by Jess Kidd or Long Bright River by Liz Moore or Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdich."

I'm going through the prompts and posting what I read, vs what I planned to read. I did read Things In Jars, though I wouldn't recommend it. I did end up also reading the other two books I mentioned, but for other prompts, and I didn't love Future Home either. I'm currently reading Long Bright River and am liking it so far.

message 87: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3766 comments I’m reading The Hidden Girl and Other Stories by Ken Liu. I didn’t try to find an author for this prompt. I just waited until I started reading something and discovered that it fit. I highly recommend Liu’s other short story collection Paper Menagerie and Other Stories.

message 88: by Stacey (last edited Sep 27, 2021 02:06PM) (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments I read the awe-inspiring War in Val d'Orcia: An Italian War Diary, 1943-1944 by Iris Origo for this prompt. What a tale of bravery and unselfishness! It's a first-hand account of World War II as it comes to the Tuscan region of Italy, near Montepulciano. Origo and her family take in 23 refugee children, besides caring for their beloved farmhands and locals during the war.

Two of my favorite authors fit this prompt and I recommend anything by them: John Fowles and Nicole Mones. In addition, I loved Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson, which fits, too.
