I went into this intimated by my past experiences with this story by another translation that I probably read a thousand years ago. I think we all know the story and most have seen the movie but Heaney's translation was so good I swam through this and could hardly believe how fun and entertaining it was.

I did leave with a question about Grendel and his mother though. Is Cain Grendel's father? If not who is? The Christian morals to this story are not surprising and imply that living outside of gods rules leaves you open to the wrath of the evils like Grendel and that the god fearing hero Beowulf can set you free.
"To the everlasting Lord of All, to the King of Glory I give thanks that I behold this treasure here in front of me, that I have been allowed to leave my people so well endowed on the day I die"
It can also make you rich with gold apparently.

This was my first time reading Beowulf and I greatly enjoyed it. I'm inspired to see the movie and I also want to read J.R.R. Tolkien's translation of Beowulf.

I was reading the free kindle version of Beowulf in December and I was getting nowhere with that translation, so after reading your post, I picked up the Seamus Heaney translation and I am enjoying it (and actually following along) much better.

I have read this many times, and read Seamus Heaney's beautifully lyrical translation and listened to his reading on youtube as well. Marvellous, simply marvellous!
