Wanjiru Warama (wanjiruwarama) | 218 comments Hi Authors,

I know readers want to know what is in it for them in a book. But I have struggled to articulate or to convince myself of the benefits readers derive from my books. My current caption—…books that inform and entertain—seems okay, but how many people will buy a book based on that? How about the “I’m fat, dumb, and happy crowd? Do they care?

I write nonfiction memoir/historical stuff. And born and raised in Kenya (although I’ve spent most of my adult life in the USA), (1) my first two books are on experiences of immigrants when they first arrive.

(2) The 2nd book is on marginalization and subjugation of women geared toward African and Middle Eastern communities and social studies, for the most part, and (3) the 4th tiny book is on short stories of how I started writing and a travelogue to the Greek Islands

My current WIP (in a series and closest to my heart) is about life in Kenya from pre-colonial, colonial (mostly), and post-colonial periods. The series is the one I would like to put out there the most, and I intend to consult a publicist when my first, and possibly together with the second, book in the series is clean enough.

As opposed to being reader-driven, my writing is based on a craving to fill gaps I notice in history books that I have read.

Any insights will be appreciated.

Genevieve Montcombroux | 69 comments First lesson in writing class is "write from the heart". Write it and worry about readers when you have put your very best out. My series All the Silences set in WWII was written with the tears of my heart and I was sure nobody would read it - it isn't a romance, it isn't a thriller but I've received wonderful comments.
My sincere best wishes.
Genevieve
