This whole book is about Cadence’s trying to remember what happened during the summer when she was 15 years old, but her subconscious blocking that memory. This explanation contains some MAJOR spoilers. If you are going to read this book, don’t read on.

Cadence (Cady) has a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that she thinks is from a swimming accident during summer vacation visiting her grandfather. This is not what happened. Her mother won’t tell her because the doctors think that it’s best if she remembers on her own. Because of her TBI, she doesn’t retain this knowledge.
Page-49 [I used to ask Mummy when I didn’t remember the rest of summer fifteen. My forgetfulness frightened me. I’d suggest stopping my meds, or trying new meds, or seeing a different physician. I’d beg to know what I’d forgotten. Then one day in late fall—the fall I spent undergoing tests for death-sentence illnesses—Mummy began to cry. “You ask me over and over. You never remember what I say.”]
The narrative is interlaced with memories of her friends, The Liars that she sees every summer. There’s also a “fairy tale� that’s tied to her memories. When she finally returns during summer seventeen, things are very different.
The first part of the true memory returning happens on page 151 [Even farther away, the Wood Hole fire boat chugs toward the fire that we set. Gat, Johnny, Mirren, and me. We set this fire and it is burning down Clairmont.] This is a big revelation, but it gets worse.
The shocking true memories come back at Chapter 81, when Cady remembers everything that happened that night, and that her friends are dead. She is the only one to survive those events. She also realizes what her family has been going through, and that her condition has held them emotionally hostage.
