A place to discuss books with the theme "Talking animal/object" for our 2021 reading challenge.

I've just started reading Mordew. While I'm reading it for the Shadow challenge, I note in the extensive front pages (which should not be overlooked) it contains a talking book and Anaximander, a talking dog.

I'll read anything with a talking dog. Really enjoyed Perestroika in Paris by Jane Smiley, with many talking animals.

I finished Hollow Kingdom today and all the characters are talking animals. I LOVED it! It was so inventive and entertaining.

Hollow Kingdom is one of my favorites.

Good to know! Although I know of many fairy tales with talking animals, off hand I could not think of any novels except Kafka on the Shore. I loved that novel, but the talking cats are really just a small part.
Then I know of a number of books where people can shapeshift into animals, but they don't usually talk when in animal form

I have no idea if you would like Hollow Kingdom or not! It isn't fantasy and does take place in our world. But it is pretty bonkers! You might love it though. I'm talking myself into you liking it, ha!

I might like it. Kafka on the Shore is pretty strange too. Have you read it?

I had a look. I am not sure! Strange or weird is good, it is humor I often don't like because I often don't find it funny.

It's definitely got a lot of humor.

I haven't read Kafka on the Shore.

The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame is an oldie but goody--a wonderful classic full of talking animals.
