Hi all and welcome to Uno 2021, most of you are new to me and I'm looking forward to getting to know you all. This years theme is movies and there are some great movies here makes me want to indulge in a movie marathon.

A little bit about me: I live in South Wales with my 4year old Spaniel/Daschund. I lost my OH last summer after a very short battle with cancer, I have been fortunate that I have a good support network. We are currently in lockdown number 3 but I have been able to split my work week up with 2 days in the office and 3 at home.

This is my 5th year playing UNO and it is one of my favourite team challenges, something which I have a slight addiction to. You can pretty much read anything for this challenge and I pretty much read anything. I have been known to read the most obscure of books in search of one that fits a challenge. My preferred genres are Thriller, Mystery, Paranormal, Romance, Fantasy, UF and usually have 2 or 3 books ongoing at any one time.

What does everyone like to read?

When you check in please link your UNO Shelf.
Thanks!

Insiyah (insiyahxo) | 503 comments Hi everyone, and welcome to Beetlejuice! I'm your host Insiyah, and tonight's show begins with...

(sorry not sorry)

Regardless of my bad jokes, I'm one of the co-captains of Beetlejuice, which I've not watched and I'm kinda in two minds if I should. I prefer reading over watching anything, which is why my watch list is pretty long, though not as long as my TBR list.

A bit about me - I live in Dubai. I'm a writer and a photographer, and I'm currently looking for a job as a Content Creator. I'm opinionated, open-minded, and a total self-proclaimed nerd.

I'm open to reading most types of books except for romance, especially Harlequin style ones (those I am not at all fond of). For this year, my aim is to read more classics, biographies and contemporary novels. I also want to read more books like How to Argue With a Racist: What Our Genes Do (and Don't) Say About Human Difference and My Life on the Road. I also love a good Daniel Silva and occasionally Jeffrey Archer, but I'm kinda done with Grisham (don't get me started).

I'm going to stop there, because I can go on and on about books forever (as long as my coffee is next to me).

I'm really looking forward to getting to know you guys!

Marieke | 62 comments Hi everyone!

I am the second co-captain of Team Beetlejuice. This is the first time I am participating in this challenge, but I am very excited for the upcoming months!

Bit about me: I am living in the Netherlands with my boyfriend. I am in my fourth year of studying medicine. I use most of my spare time to reading, which honestly wasn't that much in 2020. But overall I still got to manage to read quite a lot.

I am always reading several books at the same time. And my tbr seems to constantly grow and grow and grow.
My preferred genres are Fantasy/Sci-fi, historical fiction and mystery/thriller/horror. But I am open for basically any genre.

My UNO-shelf is: UNO

Utkarsha Arvind | 98 comments Hi, everyone!
This is my first time participating in a UNO and I am looking forward to the next three months of books and conversations with you all.

I live in Delhi, India. After completing my Masters in English literature, I took a break from studying in 2019 to work and get a taste of adulting. Did not go so well. So, I am preparing for PhD now and working as a part-time freelance writer.

I like painting, cooking, sleeping and using my sense of humor as a defence mechanism. I also like reading books, I guess. :P

My favorite genres are fantasy, YA, Historical fiction and non-fiction. I love reading plays as well.

Natalie | 234 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Natalie and I live in the US near Boston and work as an engineer. I have an active toddler and realize most of my free time goes towards reading so I do not have a lot of other hobbies at the moment. Requesting library books through libby?

My favorite genre is fantasy, mainly because I have always wanted a dragon and magical powers. But I read a bit of almost everything. I played this game a few years ago when I would do a ton of team challenges and decided to play again this year.

Sabrina | 341 comments Hi,

My name is Sabrina, and this is my third year doing the UNO challenge. I am interested to see what mini challenges they come up with this year. I am an addict for sure. I pledged to at least 8 books a month. I live Louisiana. I am an educator, and in my free time I like to read romance and fantasy.

I'm really excited about UNO this year. I hope everyone has a great week.

p.s. I sent everyone a friend request so that planning for those reverses will be easier.

Sabrina | 341 comments Louise, Marieke, or Insiyah,

Could one of you add a tracking spreadsheet to our page?

A tracking spreadsheet would make it easier for everyone to keep track of who is reading what for what cards and who has finished their books so that everyone can easily plan to read for missing cards.

Please.

Edit: I made a quick one. Feel free to use, edit, or not use. I just felt I should contribute, since I requested it.

Jen (book_worm23) | 229 comments Hello all!

My name is Jen and this is my 4th year doing the UNO challenge. This is one of my favourite challenges so I look forward to doing it every year.
I recently graduated from college specializing in Computer Software development, so I'm in that fun phase of job hunt mode.
My favourite genres are fantasy, SciFi, Mystery, YA, anything action adventure and pretty fast paced, occasionally I'll read romance but I have to be in the mood for it, or as long as it has a good story line.
I'm looking forward to this starting again :)

My uno shelf: uno-2021

message 31: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Aloha everyone! I'm Lauri from Hawaii and I just LOVE UNO! I think this will be my 6th time playing. I am constantly reading -- I started when I was 4 years old and have never looked back! Feel free to check out my shelf 5 star reads for cool ideas...

My favorite genres are historical, paranormal, chick-lit, mysteries (both cozy & regular), psychological thrillers... In short, just about anything! I'll try any book -- I give 'em 100 pages. If I just hate it, I'll move on. This rarely happens. I may let it lie for weeks or even years sometimes & then come back to finish it later on. I read multiple books simultaneously. I always have a book (or 2!) in my bag.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!

I can't do a link to save my life, but my shelf is uno-2021...

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments And soooo... How are we going to work this, dear Captains? Are we going to call out color books and/or the various numbers in our hands OR shall we just read as we will and list as many possible categories our books will fit and have you place them as we go along? I've been on teams that have used both methods and they seem to work equally well...

I will respectfully volunteer for a Red 4 -- I have a book that will fit that I'm dying to start! Let me know!

message 33: by Ani (last edited Jan 20, 2021 10:00PM) (new)

Ani | 48 comments I'm new to this, but does red 4 mean it has to be red in colour as well as have any of the below?
- has a 4 or Four in the title
- has a title starting with F
- has an author first name or surname starts with F
- has a character with a first name, surname, or nickname starting with F
- is set in a place name starting with F
- is book 4 in a series
Or is it either red or four? Just checking. also can we start this weekend or does it have to be Feb 1st?

Insiyah (insiyahxo) | 503 comments Welcome aboard to Anisa, Natalie, Sabrina, Jen and Lauri!

You all should be aware that as Louise, Marieke and I live on this side of the Atlantic Ocean, we might take some time before we're able to reply to you guys.

Message 30: I've linked the spreadsheet but it's also in Message 1.

Message 32: Lauri, I've already got your shelf, and in case any of you need to see it, I'm linking it HERE . In Message 6, Louise has linked some of the shelves, and she'll update it soon, so everyone can use that message in the future.

Message 33: Lauri, what book have you got for Red 4?

Message 34: Anisa, in this case it's red and four. The colored cards needs to satisfy both the color requirement as well as the number requirement.

To everyone: I'm adding a general count of cards to Message 14, to keep track here on this discussion. The more detailed information is on the spreadsheet. Louise has also created a tracker in Message 7 specifically for the Colored Cards and any other cards that are more complicated than the usual numbered cards.

Louise | 1282 comments Good morning everyone we are all checked in and nearly ready to go. Welcome everybody.

Thank you Sabrina for the tracking spreadsheet I hadn’t got round to that but but as you have kindly provided one I’ve linked it in message 6.

Ok now to talk strategy:
Read what you want, and put down every option that your book works for in your completion. In general there won’t be claiming of specific cards other than the colored cards. Towards the end of the month we will reach out if we are short of any specific cards. In February we have 16 #5 cards!

 Colored Cards
These are the ones we need to try and get planned out before hand - listing them here but will track who has claimed/completed which cards in message 7

Red 5
Red 4
Red 6
Green 1
Red 4
Green 1
Yellow 1
Red 5
Wild Draw 4
Wild Draw 4
Wild Draw 4
Wild Draw 4

And to start off I’m claiming one of the red 5 with IN Doubt (Redemption Thriller #9; Ivy Nash Thriller, #3) by John W. Mefford

 Reverse Cards
Please friend the rest of the team so we can fill in these cards easily

Books can’t be started until the countdown reaches 0 :)

Completions there will be no separate completion thread. All completions will be posted in here (sample completion post above) or on the tracking spreadsheet (thank you Sabrina). Whichever option you go for please check the following:
1. Marked as read
2. On your UNO shelf
This will help the 3 of us easily check books.

That’s all for now

For me, I will claim one of the green 1 with:
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott , which I am dying to finally read.

And if necessary, I can do one of the wilddraw4 cards for red4 with De vliegeraar by Khaled Hosseini , (the kite runner in dutch). But otherwise it can be many numbers. :)

On my kindle, I have a series with the main characters name starts with the letter I.

I don't mind re-reading them for the challenge. I'll added them to the tracking sheet so you can see how many I promise to read that way you can determine how many you still need for the month.

Jade City (The Green Bone Saga, #1) by Fonda Lee Shockwave (Star Kingdom #1) by Lindsay Buroker The Lord of Stariel (Stariel, #1) by A.J. Lancaster

I found an I character in this so I can read that for Red 5
The Beast of Beswick (Everleigh Sisters, #1) by Amalie Howard

And just to double check for the wild draw 4 we just need to do any of the color cards again? So if more than one of mine works for green 1 I can read both. Also I was not planning to read any of the above if someone else has something they want to use for those cards.

Sorry, I forgot to hit refresh when I posted a second time and didn't see your post. I thought it just had to be a character (theoretically with some sort of scene/line). The spreadsheet doesn't say it has to be the main character. The character is the sister of the main character and her name appears 279 times. I haven't read it so I don't know if she is prominent enough to be a "main" character, but she appears to be a big part of the book.

And let me know which of my green books work.
