Verify Word Count for Children's books:

In previous years we have used TinEye for cover color verification, but that is no longer required. If you have a cover that you think works, post it here. If the captains all agree, good. If we don't agree among ourselves, we'll ask the other captains in the captain's group.

Laura | 2892 comments Hello everyone! It's so nice to meet you all. I think everyone here is new to me, so I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you.

The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies!

I'm a stay-at-home homeschooling mom of 6 girls (my oldest got married this Summer, my youngest is 11). We have 5 cats and a plethora of chickens.

Uno is one of my favorite team challenges. I love that we can pretty much use anything that you want to read. I read a bit of just about everything. Romance, Fantasy, Mystery, Sci-Fi, UF, Paranormal, and even the occasional non-fiction book.

What does everyone else like to read?

Also, can you please link to your Uno shelf for me? Thanks!

Hey there, everyone! My name is Sisa and I live in San Antonio, TX.
I am a SAHM with my 4-year-old daughter, and I help lead a hiking group that does local and statewide hikes.
I started doing the Popsugar Reading challenge a few years ago, and since then I feel like my taste in books has really broadened. I enjoy reading pretty much every genre, so it just depends on what I'm in the mood for. This is my 3rd year playing UNO and I can't wait!
I also love The Princess Bride! It's one of my favorite books and movies, and I even love the memoir, As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride, by Cary Elwes. So, all of that to say, I'm super excited to be on this team with you guys!

Not to get ahead of the game, but I've already started looking at my books, and I have a few that fit the color cards. I'm not sure how you guys organize that, but I just wanted to let you know. :)
Anxious People (yellow 0- character Zara)
Magic Lessons (yellow 3- author Hoffman)
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (green 3- character Casca Highbottom; green 7- character Volumnia Gaul)

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman Magic Lessons (Practical Magic, #0.1) by Alice Hoffman The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games, #0) by Suzanne Collins

Anyways, I can't wait to spend the next few months getting to know y'all and adding some new books to my always growing TBR. :P

Edit: here is the link to my UNO shelf- /review/list...

bookswithpaulette | 1470 comments Hi everyone! Welcome to The Princess Bride team.
Im your co-captain again the year, its my third year playing UNO and its a lot of fun and a great way to kick of some solid reading for the year!

a little bit about me...

I live in Melbourne, Australia. Its summertime here, so I'm looking forward to ramping up my reading game outside in the great outdoors. I love a good thriller, crime, mystery book, a little historical fiction .... romance books are definitely not my thing.

Looking forward to chatting to you all, Sisa I remember you from my first year playing UNO we were in the James Bond team, great to see you back :)

Hey Sisa,
Great to see you back again for UNO! Oh I love to go hiking too, day hikes or multi day hikes are always fun. and fabulous for audio books too

Did you want to read all three of those? Just checking because I have you down as 4/month. It's fine to read more, but I don't want to put you down for all three if that's not your intention and then have you stress about it!

I have an option for a Green 3 or a Green 7, but in our Captain's chat none of us have any yellow options yet.

message 16: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments I knew there was something I forgot! To explain how I've found that UNO works well.

I can set up a tracking spreadsheet if people would prefer it, but otherwise, if you post a completion post here, and tell us what #s a book works for, the captains will add it to our team spreadsheet. We'll use the following priorities:

1. We start with the color cards. We'll have those planned out before the month starts, most likely. This will include the Wild Draw 4s.

Then, as people post completions,
2. We fill in the difficult letters/numbers. 5, 7, 8. If a book works for one of those numbers, it should go there, even if there are open cards in earlier hands (we'll get all the hands completed!).

3. Next we look at difficult hands. For February, that would be Hand 5 & 7, with 2 Draw 2s each. Also, Hand 13 will require care because there are 2 Wilds, 3 8s, and 1 5, so at least one of the Wilds will need to be filled with an 8 or a 5.

4. Finally, if a book doesn't fit one of the above steps, or we are done with one (or all) of them, then we just start at the top and fill in the first spot that the book works for.

Following this plan, we won't finish a hand for the first few weeks of the month, but when we start to finish the hands we will get them done quickly!

bamaace83 | 257 comments Hey everyone! I'm Anna. I think this is my 3rd year playing Uno, I probably should go look at my shelves to verify that...but I love this challenge. I live in the Louisville, Ky area and work in pediatric healthcare. I work during the week and am off on weekends which is usually when I catch up on a lot of reading. I've been with my husband in all 15 years, back since college days, and we have one dog, Trooper, who really thinks he's human. I love reading almost anything but sci-fi is growing on me. I can't wait to get to know everyone. I haven't looked ahead but I've been holding on to Anxious People by Fredrik Backman for Uno so I know that book will be read for me at some point in the next three months. Sisa, you read it first and then I'll use it for a reverse card in the next round. :)

I might need to ask about these in the Captain's group. Anxious People looks a bit Orange to me, and Magic Lessons looks a little Brown to me.

Stacey | 610 comments Hi all! I'm Stacey and I live in Cincinnati, OH. This is my 2nd year playing and I enjoyed it so much that I'm a co-captain this year.

My most read genres are thriller/mystery/horror and sci-fi although many of my all time favorite books are outside of that. I love finding new books so I hope everyone will recommend their favorites during the challenge.

Animals are a hot mess. I think your cat and my dog must be long-lost cousins. Trooper is lazy all day long and just lays around but from 6 pm to 9 pm, he is alert and ready to play and all attention should be on him. I think that he thinks his day time job is to be a bum and then when we get home from work it's time for him to be noticed. He even does that if we are off or when we were home off and on last spring during quarantine.

I'll have time later this week to really search and see which color books that I can take. I think now that you say it that book may look a little more orange than yellow but maybe we can get lucky. It's just sitting there waiting for me to read. I know that I can take a wild or green 3 with In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren . Main character has a last name of Hollis.

Hey Paulette!! Yes, I remember you as well! It's great to play with you again! :D
And I agree, hiking is so much fun! If I could start every day with a hike, and end every day with a book, what a wonderful world this would be! :)

Yes, I would love to read all three, if that's okay with everyone else. I'll just see how much time I have when I'm done before I commit to any more. And I agree, pictures can be so tricky, because colors look different to everyone. At home, Anxious People looks like a mustard yellow, and Magic Lessons looks like a golden yellow. Let me know what the captains decide, and I'll go with whatever y'all say. :)

Yes, I've been holding on to it too! It's been hard just seeing it sit on my shelf, and listening to all they hype. haha :D
I might be remembering wrong, but I think that we could both read it for color cards this round, if one of us reads it for the WD4?
Edit: as long as the captains approve it for a yellow cover

Alekhya Suma (alekhya_suma) | 106 comments Hi everyone! I'm Alekhya (pronounced a-lake-ya). I'm a 23-year-old from India. This is my first UNO and I'm really excited about it.
I love to read anything as long as it is fiction. Historical fiction is my newly found interest.
I've taken up a new job a few months ago that eats up a lot of my time. I don't read as much as I'd like to because of that but I still manage 2-3 books a month.

Hello Alekhya! Welcome to UNO! I think you're going to love it. It's so fun and easier to understand once we start playing. You'll have it down before you know it! And to answer your question, yes that book would definitely work for yellow 3, because the cover is mostly yellow and the author's name starts with an H.
That's a great find! :)

For those who are new to UNO, I feel like this cheat sheet really helped me my first year.

0- Z
1- O
2- T
3- H
4- F
5- I
6- S
7- V
8- E
9- N
Skip- K or P

I wrote it down on my phone and referenced it when looking for books. It really helped until I had them all memorized, and now I'm finding UNO titles even when we're not playing throughout the year. :D

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I found another book on my shelves last night that would work for Blue 4, in case one of those other books don't work as yellow.
What Alice Forgot (character Frannie)

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
