Char | 17408 comments Here is a spot for the few of us signed up at The Pigeonhole to read Plague of Gulls by Stephen Gregory.
Since this is a new service, I thought it would be nice to have a place to talk about this service as well as the book.

message 2: by Kate (new)

Kate | 3525 comments Okay, I'm in.:) Are you starting this now?

message 3: by Paul (new)

Paul Nelson (pauln) | 104 comments I will be finished on this very soon, it's my first from Stephen Gregory, first quarter anyway and its pretty good so far, liking his style of writing.

message 4: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments I'm going to download it when I get home and then send it to my Kindle. So I'm not starting right now, but within a few hours I hope to get going with it.

Paul, I like his writing style VERY much already, so I'm hoping I will like this one too. :)

Char | 17408 comments In what fashion did you guys download it? I want to send mine to my Kindle so that a copy is kept in my Kindle archives.

message 6: by Kate (new)

Kate | 3525 comments Yeah, I've downloaded it and sent it to kindle.
There's an app you can download so that when you get the mobi file onto your computer you have an option to send it to kindle.
I'm going out shortly but I'll pm you when I get back and give you more details. :)

message 7: by Paul (new)

Paul Nelson (pauln) | 104 comments If you go on your bookshelf you can download to your pc and then email to your kindle, looking at the site there is some other interesting looking books :)

message 8: by Paul (new)

Paul Nelson (pauln) | 104 comments I've subscribed to Fraternite also.

message 9: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments I downloaded it and I just sent it to my Kindle. We'll see how it goes. :)

message 10: by Char (last edited Feb 02, 2015 07:27AM) (new)

Char | 17408 comments I clicked on the "about" link and learned a lot, (finally), about Mr. Gregory. Seriously, when reviewing his other books I googled him and I couldn't find anything out at all. I mean it was like the guy barely existed. To this day I still can't find a picture anywhere, but at least I know more about him and his family now.

message 11: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments It landed on my Kindle, I'm good, Kate!

message 12: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments I have it on my phone but wondering if I shud put it on my kindle as well.

message 13: by Paul (new)

Paul Nelson (pauln) | 104 comments Finished, there's enough to retain my interest and some intriguing points regarding the quarry, the gull and the protagonist. Hopefully I haven't forgotten it all before I get onto the next stave :)

I like his style of writing though and luckily I've got 4 of his paperbacks to read.

message 14: by Valancourt Books (new)

Valancourt Books (valancourt_books) | 271 comments Pigeonhole has a picture of him now. I've seen pics of him before but they weren't posted online. Mystery man!

I read the first "stave" this evening and I'm enjoying it.

message 15: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments Man, Paul! You're already done? I just a got home from dinner so I'm doing in. :)

message 16: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments *diving*

message 17: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments There's a picture? I must've missed it.

message 18: by Addy (last edited Jan 30, 2015 09:53PM) (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Wow. Just read the first chapter and already he's managed to hook me in! I'm gonna take it slow since the next stave comes next Wednesday? I think. My favorite thing is how Gregory can cause you to look at an ordinary bird and turn them into something horrific. He can cross the line between what a normal relationship is with an animal and I love that.

message 19: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments Sounds promising so far! :)

message 20: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments So yeah, I'm done.
I already don't like waiting. :(

I'm into the story for sure. I can't wait to see what you guys think. :)

message 21: by Paul (last edited Jan 31, 2015 04:27AM) (new)

Paul Nelson (pauln) | 104 comments Spoilers alert :)

Char did you see the films section, There's a film of The Cormorant from 93. Didn't know that I'm going to read it in the next couple of weeks.

Now I've been to the Castle in this story (years and years ago and Snowdonia many times) I'd imagine it's a touch creepy and foreboding at night. Anyway the whole quarry and the dead bodies thing is intriguing but not nearly as much as this pet gull that's attached itself to young David.

The BBC version of The Cormorant was never released on VHS or DVD, but it's available on Youtube (or it was at one point). I enjoyed it. Tough movie to transfer to television but they did a good job. I recommend watching it.

Thanks for that. :)

message 26: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments I signed up for this one! I'll probably get to it later tonight or tomorrow sometime. I can't wait--I love this guy's fascination with birds.

message 27: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments And thank you Charlene for the link, I had no idea something like that existed!

message 28: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments Maxine, is nice to see you. :)

message 29: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments Thanks, Ryan! I was all over the site post night. I found the movie, his bio and picture. What an interesting man!

message 30: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments Paul, I can't believe you've actually been there. That's COOL, man. :)

message 31: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments Got the first stave done. What a start to the story.

"‘The gulls, ladies and gentlemen ... the gulls are the souls of men who have drowned at sea. Look, and listen to them screaming ..." Love it.

I like Brian, the gay friend who guards the quarry. He's kind of a nice bit of sunshine in a tale that very dreary and bleak.

message 32: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments Maxine, I'm glad you liked it. I did too. :)

message 33: by John (new)

John (frayerbanac) | 336 comments I'm intrigued by The Pigeonhole. How long is a "stave"? What a lovely word!

message 34: by Paul (new)

Paul Nelson (pauln) | 104 comments I've got one stave that's 22 pages, so I guess anything between that and 75 pages. This book is 4 staves long

message 35: by John (new)

John (frayerbanac) | 336 comments Thank you, Paul.

message 36: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments I like the word too, though I admit I found it a little bit confusing at first.

message 37: by John (new)

John (frayerbanac) | 336 comments It has various definitions, but used in this context is lovely. I think I might sign up for this. How long has The Pigeonhole been going?

message 38: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments I'm not sure. They just came to my attention because of my love for Stephen Gregory.

I have to say, that for this book, at least, I think it's a good deal and very well done.

I like that there are tiles on the website, that unlock with each stave. At least I think I like them, only one is available to see so far.

message 39: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Has anyone got the next stave? I got an email but it's not in my app yet. I wonder if there is something I need to do.

message 40: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Well, now suddenly it's there. Yay!

message 41: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments YAY!
I won't be able to get it until later tonight. :(

message 42: by Paul (new)

Paul Nelson (pauln) | 104 comments Yeah its looks like its both stave 1 & 2 together, so with 4 you'll get the whole book.

message 43: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments Screw it. I downloaded it to my work puter, then sent it to my Kindle ,and deleted it from my work PC.

I wish there was a linked TOC so I wouldn't have to scroll through to find out where I left off.

message 44: by Valancourt Books (new)

Valancourt Books (valancourt_books) | 271 comments I'm starting the next stave tomorrow in our first hotel for this vacation. Can't wait!

message 45: by Char (last edited Feb 04, 2015 05:26PM) (new)

Char | 17408 comments Awesome! You guys work so hard, I'm glad to see you getting a rest. I hope you have an excellent time!

message 46: by Kate (new)

Kate | 3525 comments I've just read the 3rd stave. I've cringed when I've read some of it (view spoiler)

message 47: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments I just started the third stave last night so I can't click on that spoiler yet. But your reaction makes me excited, Kate! :)

message 48: by Kate (new)

Kate | 3525 comments This one is a much slower burn than Wakening the crow. There was a lot going on in this stave.

message 49: by Char (new)

Char | 17408 comments I didn't get a chance to read today at lunch, so I'm hoping to finish this stave tonight. Then I'll be back. :)

message 50: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments Kate posted in the discount thread that Gregory's The Woodwitch is discounted on Amazon. I got excited enough about that to post it over here :)
