Richard Kenneth Conde | 310 comments I read this play a third time, and each time, I get an idea I never had before about

I never thought of this before. This thought just hit me. Ophelia has a father and brother. No mention when the mother died. Okay. As a single parent, Polonius has to assume both paternal and maternal duties for his daughter. Obviously he would not be as attentive to his daughter's female needs as a mother would do.

Also, being King Claudius's right hand man, that would be a stressful job, and he would assumedly neglect his daughter from her time of needs, especially during her teenage years. I am assuming her mother was deceased during her teenage years, as she is still young during the play. So during her formative years, there are motherly neglect towards her, thus unpreparing her for her eventual bout with Hamlet when he decided to act crazy.

Thus she must already have some sort of mild PTSD, and the death of her father, elevated that PTSD on a higher level. thus leaving her to commit suicide, and her eventual drowning with no one around to witness it.

Okay this is just a hypothesis okay. I'm just saying.
