Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 4367 comments Nominations for the August 2021 read are for books published from 1980-1999.

SF novels or short story collection/anthologies that have not previously been read by the group are eligible. Please check the bookshelf & the nomination rules for further clarification before nominating a book.

Previously nominated books are on this bookshelf. More qualifying authors & books can be found here.

Please add your nominated book title as a clickable link directly to the goodreads' book page, with author and year, so it looks like this:
Children of Time
Adrian Tchaikovsky
2015
(If you can't create book links, please include the URL to the book.)

Tell us why you chose the book that you're nominating. Remember that books require seconding now. We'll close this nomination thread on the 15th of June in order to have plenty of time for poll(s) and then for acquisitions of the winner(s).

message 3: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) This Alien Shore
C.S. Friedman
1998

I read this a few years back and really enjoyed it. The world building was very inventive and there was a lot of action and intrigue.

message 4: by Ronald (new)

Ronald (rpdwyer) | 174 comments I nominate Replay by Ken Grimwood.

I haven’t read the book but its average Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ rating is over 4 stars. My Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ friends have given it 4 and 5 stars. That is intriguing the heck out me for my impression is that the book is not as well known in the science fiction community. Maybe this book is a hidden gem?

message 5: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 4367 comments I'll nominate Wild Cards edited by George R.R. Martin (1986). It's half a dozen or so short stories, each by a different author, set in a universe that Martin oversaw. After WWII, a virus has infected mankind & given some wild powers while it just killed or mutated others.

We haven't read any of this series yet & I think we should since both the stories & the authors have been very influential on the genre. This was published the same year as "The Watchmen" comics came out & there are a lot of similarities. Besides that, they're a hell of a lot of fun & it's been far too long since I last read them.

message 6: by Cato (new)

Cato (cato-the-cactus) I nominate
Dawn
by Octavia E. Butler
(1987)

I have not read this book but it has been on my list for some time now. It has an average goodreads rating of 4.13 and promising reviews. Readers describe it as a complex story with very alien aliens.

message 7: by Oleksandr (new)

Oleksandr Zholud | 1372 comments Sundiver by David Brin, originally published in 1980. I have this book in my TBR list for years, in order to check the whole series, which got several SF awards

message 8: by Leo (last edited Jun 04, 2021 12:37AM) (new)

Leo | 779 comments I just finished Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis trilogy, that starts with Dawn, and can recommend it.

I second Sundiver.

If you want to, go nominate something for September.
