Interesting so far - lots of historical narrative so I think that might need to be something you are okay with to enjoy this book.

Click below for my review - a lot of history to sift through so it may be too much for some, but I ended up enjoying it!

Liane | 70 comments I listened to the BBC dramatization of this. I’m not sure how true to the book it was, because I didn’t feel that it was repetitive like Matthew suggested. However it was a very good rendition. And I’m glad I listened to it.

I agree it was a fascinating historical period. Some of the research I’ve done suggests that it was a pretty accurate historical fiction.

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 22 comments I enjoyed this quite a bit even though I thought it could use some editing. I thought about switching to a dramatization about half way in but then decided to push on.

I didn't know anything of this history so I wouldn't have noticed if there were historical inaccuracies. I'm not one to get worked up over historical inaccuracies anyway because they can sometimes make for a better novel. Historical fiction is great in that it often wants to make you look up more about the history as Liane did here.

Eileen | 151 comments Hmm...I may have to check out the BBC dramatization of it, especially because I'm a huge fan of Derek Jacobi. I listened to the audiobook and my feeling was more like Matthew's I think.

It was definitely an interesting historical period and it reminds me of some things I learned with my students, lol! I'm a math and science tutor, but sometimes I worked with my students on other things like social studies!

Liane | 70 comments Eileen, I listened to the BBC dramatization while hiking, so now every time I take a hike my mind drifts to Claudius. It’s rather weird that it stuck with me that strongly.

Ha! I hope that is not a bad thing!

Eileen | 151 comments Interesting! I will add that to my queue for listening. As I said, I loved Derek Jakobi in the series, although I don't remember much now. But when I started reading this book, I kept seeing Jakobi in my mind, so it will be interesting to listen to the adaptation.

Liane | 70 comments Matthew, no, it’s not a bad thing, just weird to be contemplating ancient Greek politics in modern day woods. Better than dwelling on current day politics!!😆 and it feels circular, like these woods have probably been around since before that age and have lived through it all. This too shall pass.
