I am a big lurker here (and swear I like fun things) but am thirding this. It is looking like I will have mostly downvotes this time.

I'm realizing as I follow the comments for these voting threads that a lot of people do this challenge for different reasons, which is probably why I don't want a zillion completely bizarre categories (since the ATY list is the main chunk of books I read in a year) when someone else does (especially if they're reading way more than 52 books in a year).

Also I realize this is probably not the way to make a good impression with regular posters here, but can we please consider the Disney prompt dead if it doesn't get in this time?
I have my own personal prejudices against song prompts in general (and Disney in particular) but it just feels like if it doesn't get in at this point, it's time to stick a fork in it.

And now I will sneak back into the shadows..

Sorry about that, viemag. I forgot to adjust the dates when I copied the intro post over.

Beth | 450 comments @Edie @Katie - phew I'm glad it's not just me! I was starting to think everyone is going to be upvoting my downvotes. The discussion often doesn't reflect in the results though so we'll have to wait and see what the silent majority are thinking.

I would bet with so many niche prompts (Wizard of Oz, Lizard Spock, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc), the voting will be more spread out than it would be if one or two of these prompts were on the poll with more generic prompts.

I have a feeling that there will only be one winner and I’m pretty sure it is my least favorite epistolary.

message 60: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1823 comments The vocal minority feels people have been going for the easy prompts, and there was a push to get some more fun ones in, even though some of those were suggested very recently. While I wouldn't want to see all of them get in, I do hope we get at least one or two.

I used all 8 of my votes for upvotes this time.

I ultimately did not vote for Monopoly, even though I love the idea. I also did not vote for Year of the Tiger as I really want the Olympic one, and both of those are related to China, which we already have with Asian author too. And Hugo, as others said, is covered by Powell, even though this one includes nominees.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3207 comments I was looking at the ideas for Titanium, and I was wondering what the letters SIA stood for. It took me a while to realize that Sia sang the hit song Titanium.

I'm a little confused by this comment. If the summer reading challenge said "Read a book related to the Leo or Virgo sign" would you consider it a prompt about a Western author because they're signs from the Western zodiac? My first thought would be to read a book with a character associated with a trait of that zodiac sign, not to assume that since the origin is western, I would have to read a western author.

Plus, every year is a year in the Asian zodiac so nothing about the year of the tiger is specifically more Asian than another year (last year was the year of the rat, this year is the year of the ox, etc). If we had this prompt every year, it wouldn't mean we'd have to read an Asian author every time, just like how if we had prompts about the western zodiac every year, it wouldn't mean reading a western author every time.

Thank you!! I thought SIA was an acronym since it was in all caps, and didn't realize that it referred to Sia the singer.

message 65: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2031 comments So after going back and forth, my votes are as follows:

Supernatural/paranormal character (I love urban fantasy)
Mythology (Ditto)
Disney Songs (I have an eternal love for Disney songs and while I'm not completely satisfied with the wording of the prompt, I'm still voting for it)
Bohemian Rhapsody (I love the song, the lyrics are varied enough and it just seems fun)
Wizard of Oz (Another one that just sounds fun)
Return or repeat (It's already got my mind going with how to satisfy it)
Monopoly (This discussion won me over)

And my final choice goes to the loving LGTBQ+ prompt. I debated with the revenge prompt instead because I love theme prompts, but it felt too negative and so the love won out in the end.

No one has to read an Asian book for the Chinese Year of the Tiger, some of us just identified it as a possibility. You could just as easily read about Tigers, or other wild animals, or something related to the interpretation of the tiger sign. Reading a Chinese or Asian book is also one idea for the Olympic prompt. So Nancy might be concerned that these two are competing, so she's voting for her favorite. These books are in the middle for me, so I might have to choose. Otherwise I'd vote for both.

The so-called western zodiac used to be called something entirely different. I don't remember the label for what I learned (in the dark ages before Internet). You might argue that a Greek book would fit.

We thought that might happen last week with the diversity prompts, but 3 of them got in. A little solidarity when voting helps I think. I think if people want a song prompt they should all vote for both of them to give them both a fighting chance. Same with all the fun prompts, or all the related pairs.

message 68: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1823 comments That's right, thank you NancyJ. A few other people also felt the prompts are similar so I'm not the only one.

Are you thinking of astrology for western zodiac?

message 70: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3238 comments I'm wondering if some of the feedback around the Disney prompt has to do with the way it's currently written. I was just submitting my votes, and I actually found "Disney/Pixar" a little misleading since I thought for a second it meant that the movie must be specifically from the Pixar branch of Disney.

I didn't suggest it this time, but my original intent when the prompt first went up was Disney OR Pixar, so it would include things like Snow White, The Lion King, etc. as well as Toy Story, Frozen, etc. I honestly can't remember if it was written as "Disney/Pixar" or "Disney or Pixar" previously, but I'm wondering if that's somehow made a difference. I don't mean to nitpick, and I guess it's a bit late now that the voting has started, but I wonder if people are seeing it as more limiting than it should be. Assuming whoever suggested it this time meant it to be the exact same prompt as what was suggested previously.

My intention was to suggest the Disney prompt the way you originally suggested it but perhaps I copy and pasted some other version by mistake. Sorry if that is what happened. I didn't try to change it in any way on purpose.

No problem! I assumed that was your intent and realistically, the current wording really shouldn't make a difference since it results in the exact same concept. I'm just confused because I don't remember seeing many complaints about it being too open, etc. before. Oh well, hope it gets in, but if not, it will be on my rejects challenge.

I don't think it was the wording. Some people just don't love Disney, or this type of broad prompt. I hope everyone who likes one of the song prompts votes for them both. I think that's how we got all three author prompts in. Solidarity. I didn't vote for Disney last time but I will this time. Circle of Life is a great match for the book I just finished, and I know I'll read more like it next year. [Once There Were Wolves, 5 stars]

Thanks Nina. Even though others have mentioned some of these, for some reason your list helped me see good options in a better way. I'll probably vote for Bohemian Rhapsody, but definitely won't downvote it as I was originally thinking.

Angie | 19 comments I probably won't vote until I've gotten some sleep tomorrow, but I figure I should get my thoughts down.

Right now, I have 6 upvotes and 1 downvotes. I have to decide where I will allocate my last vote.

Like/Definite Upvotes
1. A book featuring a character with paranormal or supernatural abilities
2. A book related to the Wizard of Oz - This is the only repeat suggestion I'm voting for.
6. An epistolary novel
7. A book that was nominated for or won the Hugo award - It's nominees as well as winners, so I see it as a different prompt than our other list prompt. I was planning on using a Newbery winner for that prompt anyway.
10. A book with the theme of revenge and getting even
14. A book with one of the Monopoly tokens on the cover

Neutral
3. A book related to the title of a song from an animated Disney/Pixar movie - I voted for it the first time, but this is the third time we've seen it in 8 polls.
4. A book that features loving LGBTQIA+ relationship
5. A book with a return or repeat as a major plot element
9. A book related to Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock
11. A book related to mythology
12. A book related to the 22nd chemical element Titanium
13. A book related to 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing
15. A book related to Year of the Tiger

Downvote
8. A book related to the lyrics of "Bohemian Rhapsody" - I love Queen, but I have negative associations with this song.

Emily/mods, can you just double check that I only voted once? You know how some sites say “don’t click this more than once and if you do it processes the thing twice? The page didn’t seem to be reacting so I clicked the submit several times. So it’s possible I voted a few times in quick succession.

message 87: by Marin (new)

Marin (marinbeth) | 187 comments I really like these suggestions! I keep losing track of time this year, so I've missed a lot of votes (better than last year, when I missed the voting entirely. It was a weird year).

This time, I upvoted Titanium, Olympics and Year of the Tiger, because I really like the prompts that are connected somehow to the actual year of the challenge. 2022 will by my fourth time doing ATY, so I like when there's a prompt that couldn't be in any other year.

I also upvoted the monopoly one, because I like cover prompts. I don't pay much attention to covers on my own, so I appreciate the push.

I used a couple of downvotes on prompts that would be super easy for me to fulfill, but obviously I'd be fine if they got in!

The schedule can always be found in the first thread under 2022 ATY List - Introduction, Schedule and FAQs. You do have to scroll down a bit, but you'll see it multicolor listing all the dates for suggestions, voting and announcing the winners. I have consulted it multiple times myself!
