One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

Frodo and his Companions of the Ring have been beset by danger during their quest to prevent the Ruling Ring from falling into the hands of the Dark Lord by destroying it in the Cracks of Doom. They have lost the wizard, Gandalf, in a battle in the Mines of Moria. And Boromir, seduced by the power of the Ring, tried to seize it by force. While Frodo and Sam made their escape, the rest of the company was attacked by Orcs. Now they continue the journey alone down the great River Anduinβ€”alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go.

Just starting :)

First quarter - (view spoiler)[Pippin and Merry were captured by the orcs and the entire time spent with them was full of tension! It showed how uncontrollable they were, but this was fortunate for the little hobbits as it allowed for their escape. They found themselves confronted with an Ent as they entered the forest, who allowed them to travel a great distance quicker than their little legs could have.

I really enjoyed the Ent's stories, as sad as they were. I hate thinking of all the Ents and trees being cut down. Of all the things that occur in these books and the movies, this always makes me the saddest lol. That and the missing Ent-wives! (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[The battle at Helm's Deep made this a very tense and action-heavy quarter! (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[Merry and Pip filled Gandalf in on their adventures and discoveries. Tolkien is so skilled at writing moments like these. It was so lengthy and yet never felt like an info-dump, despite the moments of action being in the past.

Frodo and Sam finally met with Smeagle. He was an untrustworthy individual, but also a pitiable one and he did prove to be honest too. He directed them on a safe path to Mordor in return for his life. Obviously the lure from the ring was fuelling him onwards, but he still did not have to provide them with more information and to further lead them on a secret side path, after delivering them to the gates of Mordor. He knew they would not survive entering there and saved their lives twice in this quarter - first by getting them off the mountain and second with his knowledge of an alternative safe path. Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[Ugh, such a great last quarter! There was no conclusion but closed in an open-ended fashion that had me eager for the final series instalment. It never felt like a 'filler' middle book, either.

I love Faramir's character, even though he isn't the most pure or kind, and so really enjoyed getting to know him as he was introduced here. After such a long stretch with solely Frodo, Sam, and Gollum this suddenly opened up with a whole new cast included. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ The Treebeard chapter was really long. Dude just kept talking. He did have some good stories in there though.
This isn’t what I expected so far. I presumed we’d spend most of our time following Frodo and Sam yet we haven’t heard from them so far. Their part of the story is the one I’m most interested in. I do like that we are still following all of the characters though and that some of the others weren’t just forgotten. Usually books would just let us know what’s going on with the main protagonist. (view spoiler)[ I like Smeagol. He is doing well at being helpful despite kind of have 2 sides at war inside of him. I’m enjoying this part of the story more than the last. Probably because I spent a lot of the last part waiting to get to these characters. Sam is probably still my favourite character. (hide spoiler)]

I agree with you. (view spoiler)[I love all the stories and characters but the ones following Frodo and Sam will always be my favourite. Gollum proved himself, for much of this, to be pretty trustworthy and helpful, which is surprising given the pull the ring has over him. (hide spoiler)]

Are you planning on completing the trilogy and reading book 3 next month? I haven't yet started it so would love to BR it if you're planning to and on whatever date is best for you :)

(view spoiler)[ This definitely built up the next book by adding a bunch more characters near the end. I like how the books aren’t concluded and it’s just a big story.
This book stepped up in action and darkness massively so I can’t wait to see what the next one does. I’m hoping for a nice happy ending but I’m not sure that’s what I’ll get. (hide spoiler)]

Yeah this book closed with the story available to go anywhere after it. I'm sure more darkness will come before any more hope is delivered.
