Sandi (sandin954) | 1276 comments Hi all,

Here are my August reads:

Top Read

Artemis - Andy Weir
I found this to be an entertaining science fiction adventure with a caper style plot. I enjoyed the characters, the science seemed plausible, and I thought the narration of the audio version by Rosario Dawson was well done.

Good Reads

Interesting Times - Terry Pratchett
One of the better books that feature Rincewind. The plot was fairly brisk, there were some laughs, and it was good to catch up with TwoFlower, the Luggage, and Cohen the Barbarian. Listened to the audio version which was well narrated by Nigel Planer.

Travel Light, Move Fast - Alexandra Fuller
The author's 4th book featuring her family focuses on the loss of her father and how she and the rest of the family navigated their grief. Listened to the audio version which was read by the author.

Rolling Thunder: A John Ceepak Mystery - Chris Grabenstein
It is always fun to catch up with Ceepak and Danny on the Jersey Shore. I thought the plot was pretty good in this installment and the narration of the audio by Jeff Woodman was well done.

The Sour Lemon Score - Richard Stark
Another well plotted and fast paced installment in this series. The book opens with a bank robbery and Parker is his usual all business self. Listened to the audio version which was ably narrated by Stephen Thorne.

Lost - Sharon J. Bolton
While this book has many of the elements I try to avoid (serial killer plot, kid protagonist, romance, and lots of melodrama) I found this to be a compelling read.

We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption in an American City - Justin Fenton
An account of a corrupt crew of Baltimore detectives. The book was very detailed and well researched but it was a depressing read.

OK Read

Last of the Independents: Vancouver Noir - Sam Wiebe
Debut PI novel set in Vancouver, Canada. This had a few things that I found engaging like the setting and the overall tone but I found the main character lacking, the plot kind of tepid, and the ending fell flat for me.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16676 comments Sandi: Very nice month! I love Andy Weir’s books and the science (and humanity!) interwoven throughout. His latest was fabulous too.
We Own This City was quite eye opening and yes, very depressing. I’m glad we group read it - though summarizing it and really thinking about what these guys did was sobering and horrible.
I need to catch up with Ceepak and Danny on the Jersey shore, thanks for the reminder!

Bonnie I like Artemis. I really liked the character and story, but found the science/technology over my head.

That is why I enjoy science fiction on audio so I can just let the tech wash over me since I never really understand it.

Will have to spend an audible credit on Weir's latest.

I am looking forward to the TV series for We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption in an American City. I assume they will pare down the characters and all the details so it will be easier to follow.
