Yes - his love and descriptions of it were full of passion, but definitely felt as though they were arrived at too quickly to be lasting. Henry's reaction to him as well was so very cynical, much in keeping with his character but the more he does these things, the more I begin to dislike him. Basil, at the end of chapter four, was a heartbreaking figure alone in his cab.
