Nicky (nickyxxx) So, hi there y'all.

I'm not into the type of fantasy with dragons, elves, dwarves, witches and wizards all crammed in one universe. But I am the kind where mostly "normal" humans occupy the fictional towns. I guess the latter is called "low fantasy"? But I'm not sure, lecture me on subgenres please. ;P

I'm also really into towns packed with people, with narrow streets and dark alleys, and market places and horse-and-carriage. Kind of a pre-industrial vibe, I'd say?

For those who are familiar with his works, settings like Michael J Sullivan's Riyria universe (book 1 is The Crown Tower) are exactly what I'm looking for.

Love,

Andrea | 3464 comments First thing that comes to mind is The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch.

Other things coming to mind tend to involve military and big battles so even if the setting is small town I don't think that's what you're looking for if it mainly focuses on a battlefield outside it. Thieves and assassin stories are a better match since those are usually limited to the towns themselves. I'm not familiar with Sullivan's works

There's gotta be more, I'll keep thinking and I'm sure others will jump in.

I thought of that book too, Andrea, but the feel/atmosphere of it is completely different from that of the Michael Sullivan books.

Michelle (michellehartline) | 1032 comments These books have a similar-type feel, along with a gallows humor, so they might fit; they're both by T. Kingfisher:

Paladin's Grace
Swordheart

Nicky (nickyxxx) Thank you all so much for responding!

I've had Locke Lamora on my list for ages now. Seems like I gotta bump it up a bit. ;P And I recently added Assassin's Apprentice too; and of course I will be reading the Riyria Revelations series in 2022. Y'all can read my mind.

I do really like the idea of thieves and assassins. I'm not super acquainted with what's out there, with thieves/assassins as main characters; so if you have more recommendations regarding that, then please drop them here, I'm eager to find more of them!

I also have on my list already: The Way of Shadows, The Blade Itself, and Age of Assassins. And I've also found a website through Google that lists tons of good recommendations, so I'll also be checking those out.

I just thought of another one. You will really enjoy this too. The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks The way of shadows by Brent Weeks!

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1007 comments You could also look at some of the classics. The Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series from Fritz Leiber is low fantasy, as is Katherine Kurtz's Deryni series.

Andrea | 3464 comments It's funny how I either own or have my eye on so many of these series being mentioned but I haven't gotten around to them yet :)

Michelle (michellehartline) | 1032 comments Too many books to choose from, maybe? I'm in a similar boat, Andrea.

message 11: by Robin (new)

Robin Tompkins | 958 comments Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar books were one of my entry points into fantasy (a long time ago) so, I can endorse Tony's recommendation. Assassins, thieves and wry humour all present and correct.

Nicky (nickyxxx) Thank you all again! I've added the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series (or at least book #1) to my TBR!

Michelle (michellehartline) | 1032 comments What about Carol Berg's Breath and Bone and Flesh and Spirit? You might like these. Limited world, excellent characterization, and just really great tale-telling.

LOL

I have those too, there was a use bookstore that was closing and was selling all their stock super cheap, 5$ for a whole box, the box being the limit what I could carry anyway since I had to get home by public transit! I thought the covers were pretty and just tossed them in.
