Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments First book in 2022 - King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo - completed January 2022. Well that was a wild, Grisha-filled ride! “Hope was the wind that came from nowhere to fill your sails and carry you home. I love returning to this world and that while nothing works out as planned, people with good intentions and courage can still win the day. Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Second book in 2022 - When You Get the Chance by Emma Lord. My first 5-star read of 2022, and it was exactly what I needed! From the cover, to the theater content, to the sparkly wonder of it all, I felt delightful at the end! Great plot movement and character dialogue! A true love letter nyc, theater kids, and family - those that step up and those who step in. I received this book as a free giveaway in exchange for my honest review. Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Fourth book in 2022 - Under the Whispering Door by T. J. Klune. Brilliant and charming, exactly what I’ve come to expect from this author! But there’s always an exploration of the goodness in the world, if we choose to see it, and this book does not disappoint. There were hilarious moments and ones that had me tearing up. Loved the characters and diversity! Definitely worth reading! 5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Fifth book in 2022 - Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed. Well-written middle grade! Doesn’t shy away from a hard subject matter but also includes the joy in life as well. Loved the characters and the descriptions of Pakistan. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Seventh book in 2022 - Castle Dor by Daphne du Maurier and Arthur Quiller-Couch. I wonder how this novel would have turned out if it was solely written by Du Maurier and not a continuation of Quiller-Couch. I found the concept intriguing and certain parts were quite clear and direct. Other sections it was like reading through fog. However, overall, it was an enjoyable read. But one I would recommend only for die hard fans. 3 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Ninth book in 2022 - The Wives by Tarryn Fisher. I have mixed feelings about this book. It kept me guessing until the end, and I understand the point the author was trying to make. But the arc felt inauthentic to the main character. The ending left me unsettled, but not in a satisfying way. Not sure if I recommend. 3.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Tenth book in 2022 - The Tsarina's Daughter by Ellen Alpsten. Overall, really enjoyable historical fiction. It took me a bit to get situated in the time period. The author does mention the suffering of the Russian people contrasted to the ostentation of the royalty. I enjoyed learning more about the history, and the author’s interpretation of historical figures actions. I received this book as a free giveaway in exchange for my honest review. Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Eleventh book in 2022 - The Maid by Nita Prose. Enjoyed this mystery! Loved the main character, how she was described and how she viewed the world. I enjoyed how the story unfolded, though it was a bit long in the middle. I appreciate that the author used her experiences working with special needs children to inform her creation of the character. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Twelfth book in 2022 - Ghost Stories of Tampa Bay by Kim Cool. I appreciate learning more history about my hometown. I will definitely be investigating more and desperately want to go on a ghost tour the next time I’m back in town. However, the stories in this book were less narratives but more like vignettes of the author’s thoughts and experiences. Not what I was expecting from the title. 3 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Thirteenth book in 2022 - How to Be a Movie Star by T. J. Klune. Heart-warming, lovely, understanding - this was a fabulous book! Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Fourteenth book in 2022 - A Chorus Rises by Bethany C. Morrow. The beginning of this book was a bit irritating. I’m not a fan of petulant teen. But the author used that to start character progression that became very satisfying. I really appreciate the message she was conveying. Really good ending. Worth reading! 4 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Fifteenth book in 2022 - Night Song by Beverly Jenkins. Given that this was her first published novel, it is impressive that she managed to combine little-known history with compelling characters and a good story. It’s a bit long and includes a lot, something that she’s mastered in her current work. Very open door. I would happily never read or hear the descriptor virginal used to describe a woman or her physical attributes ever again. Worth reading! 4 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Sixteenth book in 2022 - Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell. But it also looks at how those influences can be used in fitness, politics, misinformation, religion, among others. Good audio! Worth reading! 4 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Seventeenth book in 2022 - The Wedding Setup: A Short Story by Sonali Dev. This was a perfect gem of a short story! To introduce the characters, plot, conflict, and resolve all with the required hea is difficult to do well in a novel. To do that with such emotional effect in the confines of a short story is the mark of a true master. Definitely worth reading! 5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Eighteenth book in 2022 - The Hidden Palace by Helene Wecker. Beautiful writing and lush descriptions are this author’s signature. Her characters are complex. However, there were parts of the story that were too long, and at points, I wanted to yell at them to grow up and use their words. But it was an interesting sequel to the first book. Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Nineteenth book in 2022 - The Power of the Dog by Thomas Savage. I really enjoyed this novel! The landscape depictions were woven into the story so as to become a feature of the plot. The characters were interesting and complex with a villain that reminded me so much of someone, I hoped he would get his in the end (no spoilers!). Definitely worth reading! 5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Twentieth book in 2022 - Love Me, If You Dare by Alyssa Clarke. Overall, this was an enjoyable book. I appreciated some of the unique elements the author introduced. However, it seemed at moments that the action was lost in between plot points. I had to repeat paragraphs a few times to see if I missed something, and I did not, it was just missing. This was the author’s debut, so I’m hoping it gets worked out in the next book. Loved the main characters, and I’ll be continuing with the series. Worth reading. 3.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Twenty-first book in 2022 - Mercy Street by Jennifer Haigh. Honest and brutal is the best description I can give for this book. It is well-written with developed characters. There are difficult chapters written from the perspective of a racist, sexist white man, so that was disconcerting but brutally honest as well. Apart from those chapters, I really enjoyed the rest of the book! Place and weather are also depicted almost like additional characters. “Over the years, Claudia had heard the same words from teenagers and middle-aged women; from nurses and teachers, cops and soldiers; sex workers and rape victims and survivors of incest. It was a lesson they’d been taught from birth, swallowed and digested: at all times, in all circumstances, the woman was to blame. “Claudia thought of the protesters gathered on Mercy Street: the church going faithful, the celibate priests and monks. Would they have any interest in Shannon F. - a homeless addict who haunted the brick sidewalks of downtown crossing, harassing tourists for spare change if she weren’t pregnant? Preventing her abortion was all they cared about. The bleak struggle of her life the stark daily realities that made motherhood impossible didn’t trouble them at all. My only quibble with this book is the ending felt a bit too convenient. Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Twenty-third book in 2022 - The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Robinson. At the end, I loved this story. I appreciated the author’s note and the info she shared about her history and connection to the story. Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Twenty-seventh book in 2022 - Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore by Matthew Sullivan. Do not be fooled by the title and cover - this is not some happy go lucky romp through the shelves. This goes darker than I would have expected, but it’s an interesting mystery. It took a bit to get the plot moving, but overall, it was a good read! Not a huge fan of men writing women protagonists, and while there was depth missing in the main character, she was portrayed better than most. Worth reading! 4.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Twenty-eighth book in 2022 - When the Reckoning Comes by LaTanya McQueen. This is a powerful novel, exploring much of the apathy and hypocrisy of white America. The writing was excellent, and I really appreciate how the author created the characters and weaved together the story. It felt a little incomplete to me at the end, but it’s a wonderful debut! Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Twenty-ninth book in 2022 - Survival of the Thickest: Essays by Michelle Buteau. Michelle Buteau is one of my fav comedians, so I was excited to learn more about her. She reads the audio, and I cannot imagine absorbing this any other way - fab! The essays were a touch disjointed in how they were laid out, so there were times I got confused as to what her topic was during the chapter. But I loved her very honest approach to her truth. Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Thirtieth book in 2022 - The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, translated by Lucia Graves. I have complicated feelings with this book. There were parts I loved, particularly those describing books and Spain. But I had difficulty connecting with the characters and felt the story was too wordy. Perhaps just not the right season for me to read this one. “Evil presupposes a moral decision, intention, and some forethought. A moron or a lout, however, doesn’t stop to think or reason. He acts on instinct, like a stable animal, convinced that he’s doing good, that he’s always right, and sanctimoniously proud to go around fucking up, if you’ll excuse the French, anyone he perceives to be different from himself, but because of skin color, creed, language, nationality, or His leisure habits. But there were truths hidden amongst all that wordiness. “The words with which a child’s heart is poisoned, through malice or through ignorance, remain branded in his memory, and sooner or later they burn his soul. And just beautiful sentences - “books are mirrors: you only see in an them what you already have inside you. And “making money isn’t hard in itself. What’s hard is to earn it doing something worth devoting one’s life too. 3.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Thirty-first book in 2022 - The City of Dusk by Tara Sim. This book started out so promising, but then it got stuck in the middle of the plot before veering off the tracks at the end. It was a good concept with interesting characters. But then the same thoughts and motivations kept getting repeated, which dragged the plot down into quagmire in the middle. Then the characters all kinda went sidewise and took the plot down with them. By the end, I just didn’t care. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future, but I won’t be continuing with this series. I received this book as a free giveaway in exchange for my honest review. Not worth it. 2 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Thirty-second book in 2022 - The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley. What started out suddenly, then lapsed into quiet second-guessing, really blossomed into a fun reading experience. The book drags in parts but that only adds to the overall effect. I was surprised, and I’m not often when it comes to mysteries. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Thirty-third book in 2022 - Indigo by Beverly Jenkins. Overall, this story is fascinating! I love the characters, and the author always does a marvelous job of weaving real historical events into her tales. My only quibble with these earlier works is her use of the term “virginal - bleh! This book is an open door romance. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Thirty-fourth book in 2022 - The Rage of Innocence: How America Criminalizes Black Youth by Kristin Henning. This is an incredible work of passion and scholarship for racial justice! The author builds on each section with an anecdote from either her personal practice or a national story, followed by data and research before applying that to practical circumstances. “Black children have learned to adapt their behaviors to survive under the relentless scrutiny of police officers who see and treat them as a perpetual threat. This is essential rising for anyone in the justice and school systems. “Black students don’t feel welcome or trusted at school and are less likely than white students to report that school police and security officers have treated them with respect. As a youth and adult defender, I can tell you that these stories ring true to circumstances I see every day. “Black kids just want to be kids and yet they know their lives are profoundly limited by the constant surveillance and persistent threat of police violence. And in reality, “those who don’t want to believe we live in a nation that kills innocent children because of the color of their skin must convince themselves that police stories about dangerous black youth are true. But the dangerous black youth narrative is false and must be fought against - join the fight and read the book! 5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Thirty-sixth book in 2022 - Tightrope: Americans Reaching for Hope by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. I am incredibly impressed with this book and highly recommend it! The compassion, empathy, clear-eyed reporting brought to bear on these difficult topics is extraordinary, particularly in our deeply divided country. I truly appreciate the scholarship, but this book reads like a memoir of a town. It does not get dragged into data (though that’s included) or get mired in politics (though, that’s included too). By taking a deeply personal look at friends one of the writers grew up with, the authors are able to tell these cautionary tales of where America has failed and provide hope to how we can course-correct. There are even steps that each reader can individually take! While I don’t agree with every conclusion or suggestion, it gave me a lot to consider. Definitely worth reading! 5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Thirty-seventh book in 2022 - Cazadora by Romina Garber. Really enjoyed the broadening of this world! The conversations that are included are so necessary, especially in light of recent legislation. “I don’t know that there’s any plan for our lives I think we just get confronted with choices, and the more honest we are when making them, the more our life begins to reflect us. Love the strong women representation! “All I know is they’ve been making up stories about independent girls in every tradition since forever, And I think it’s time we take back our narratives. I felt there was a bit too much included and really wish it had been stretched into a trilogy. I hope there are more books in the future! Worth reading! 4.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Fortieth book in 2022 - Blood on the Tracks by Barbara Nickless. This was an incredibly enjoyable mystery suspense! I really liked the main character - her backstory is unique and I love that she’s caring for a former marine k9. She’s complicated, but so is everyone in the story. It rang very true, rather than being gratuitous. I learned a bit about the railroad police and marine mortuary affairs. I loved the hooks at the start of each chapter. The slight paranormal element is interesting too. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Forty-first book in 2022 - Gallant by V. E. Schwab. Beautiful, haunting story! This is one I recommend in physical book form, for the illustrations are so important to the story. They are also beautiful. I liked the characters. The author has such a deliberate way of describing her scenes, as if they are literally being drawn before the eye. I failed to connect a bit with the story and felt it ended a touch abruptly, but that could also reflect what’s occurring in my reality. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Forty-seventh book in 2022 - Topaz by Beverly Jenkins. Overall, this was an enjoyable read. It was a touch confusing at the start, as there were references to Philly and Chicago - perhaps an editing issue. The latter half of the novel, in particular, reminded me of the author’s Blessings series, as it involved some colorful townsfolk coming together to support each other. There is still some dated language, but I enjoyed her main and side characters. And as always, the history was fascinating! Worth reading! 4 stars
