Patricia | 1069 comments I've been trying to get organized but have a ways to go. So, to get started: I want to read (at least) 120 books. I will join as many challenges as my brain can wrap itself around. I will continue with some favorite series & start too many more. I will read with my two library groups--no matter what we pick! I will read from unfinished challenges from past years. I will be willing to put a book aside if it's not working for me--even if I paid good money for it. I will encourage and enable others in their reading, whether they ask for it or not. I will support my local library, my local indie, and any used bookstores that come into my path (even if that requires a few detours.)

Excellent challenges. I love starting series and then neglecting them so I can start more. I do try to continue with series each year. There are so many great ones. I'll be interested in your thoughts on Nomadland. I thought it was excellent.

Oh, we need more enablers here. I personally don't think we have enough.

Patricia | 1069 comments January update, Part 1: I have finished 14 books so far. May finish one today (for my 12 & 4 challenge). This includes two audio and two nonfiction.

I finished several I had started in December (or earlier). First Genuine Fraud. I really didn't understand the point of this book. It's not long & it kept my interest because I had to know how it ended, but, overall seemed pointless. Do not recommend.

Two books in translation. First, from the Swedish, Anxious People. I did like this but it took me a bit to get into it. Backman's strength is characterization and he does not disappoint here.

From the Japanese: A Midsummer's Equation.
My second book by Higashino. Manabu Yukawa is a physicist, also known to some as "Detective Galileo". He has gone to speak at a conference for underwater mining, a prospect which has deeply divided the small coastal town. While there, a man staying at the same hotel dies in mysterious circumstances and Yukawa is called upon to do his own investigating. Good mystery with great characters.

Two on audio: Christmas Shopaholic (narrator Nathalie Buscombe). Really enjoyed listening to the shenanigans of Becky Brandon nee Bloomwood. She is to host Christmas for the first time which is stressful enough, but everyone in her family (along with her best friend) has ideas from what to serve and how to make it to everything in between. Before long, hardly anyone is speaking to one another but Becky is determined to make everyone happy and have the best Christmas ever.

My other audio Grave Peril, The Dresden Files #3. I keep hearing this series gets better, but it hasn't pushed any buttons for me yet. I listened mostly in my car and even when half-listening, didn't feel as if I missed much. If you're into constant action, this may be for you.

Magic Lessons I've not read any of the others in this series, so I'm late to the party but have read several other books by Hoffman and have never been disappointed. Part historical fiction and part magical realism, Hoffman weaves a tale of mothers and daughters, mystery, and early American history.

Firekeeper's Daughter YA; indigenous; mystery. Danuis Fontaine is an unenrolled tribe member (this is important) who has a hard time fitting in with either her hometown or the nearby Ojibwe reservation. She was a star hockey player on her high school team and now wants to study medicine, but decides to enroll at a community college to help her mother and grandmother.

She's enlisted to help Jamie, a new recruit on her brother, Levi's hockey team, find his way around his new home. She's attracted to Jamie but some things don't seem to add up with his story. When Daunis witnesses the murder of a close friend, she finds herself in the middle of a criminal investigation involving meth which is destroying the lives of many she cares about. Highly recommended.

Patricia | 1069 comments January update, Part 2: The Holiday Swap. Yes, two of my Christmas books I finished in January. Twin sisters, both pastry chefs, but one (Cass) has stayed in their hometown to run the family bakery while the other (Charlie) has moved to LA to star in a reality baking show. When Charlie hits her head and loses her ability to taste and smell, she asks Cass to make a switch to help her save her show. A fun, entertaining read with plenty of romance.

Another fun read was The Overdue Life of Amy Byler. Amy is a single mother working as a school librarian. When her long-lost husband shows up wanting to make amends and get to know their two children he abandoned, she finally gives him a chance and takes the time to spend in NY, both for work and some overdue time for herself.

The Last Thing He Told Me Part suspense, part family drama. A newly married woman with a teenage stepdaughter finds herself the victim of a missing husband. Why is he on the run? And how well does she really know him? And what will this do for her fragile relationship with her stepdaughter?

The Broken Girls St. James is a favorite author and I greatly enjoyed this one. A dual timeline in Vermont; one in 1950 & the other 2014. Idlewild Hall is a boarding school for unwanted girls in 1950. Amid rumors that it is haunted, one of the girls disappeared and not much attempt is made to find her.
In 2014, journalist Fiona cannot stop thinking about the murder of her sister though it has been 20 years. The murderer was found and is in prison, but she still feels there is more to the story. Good suspense with St. James' usual air of creepiness.

12) The Secret, Book & Scone Society First in a cozy mystery series. Liked it well enough to continue when I'm in the mood for a light read. The friendship that forms between the four women has potential to make the series interesting and fun.

For my two nonfiction, the first was for a book club, Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century. Written by a journalist about some people living off the grid. Some by choice but mostly because of extenuating circumstances, these are mostly seniors who live in vans and RVs, finding seasonal work where they can and creating a community amongst themselves. Depressing but eye-opening and well-written.

Finally, The Way Through the Woods: Of Mushrooms and Mourning. Woon, originally from Malaysia, married a Norwegian and lives in Norway. When her relatively young husband dies unexpectedly, Woon must find her way through her grief and one way she does this is by learning about mushrooms and becoming part of that unique community of mushroom hunters. I found the parts about mushrooms interesting and informative, and appreciated how she was able to weave her own tale throughout her journey.

Lea (leaspot) | 3488 comments Wow, congrats on a great January! Sorry to hear you aren't finding The Dresden Files to your taste. In fairness, I read the first three as an omnibus and was underwhelmed, I think it took me to the fifth book to really get into them. That said, I would never recommend someone read five books to see if they like a series and the constant action does not change, so maybe you will want to let this series go. I'm hoping to read The Firekeeper's Daughter and The Last Thing He Told Me this year, glad to hear you highly recommend The Firekeeper's Daughter! Happy reading!

If you are not rooting for Harry, then stop now. Usually by book 3, fans hit a stride with loving and laughing at these characters.

Urban fantasy is not for everyone. Read something else.... have you read The Shadow of the Wind. Books and romance, and I really loved that. I usually hate romance, but it was perfect for this story about books.

Night Film?? It was pretty popular a few years ago and was truly a mystery. Very surreal.

or, The Golem and the Jinni, which is a beautiful and atmospheric tale of these two odd characters.

message 36: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1069 comments Thanks, Lea! Hope you enjoy The Firekeeper's Daughter.
Thanks, Bill! Nomadland was interesting, but definitely not an easy read.

Alondra, I know. I really wanted to like him. Maybe I should pick a book from the middle of the series. I have enjoyed Peter Grant in his Rivers of London series Rivers of London and several of the books in that series, so thought I would like this one. I have read The Shadow of the Wind. Hope to read the next one in series this year. Loved The Golem and the Jinni & would like to reread it before reading the next one.

Haven't heard of Night Film, so I'll check it out. Thanks for your help though I would expect nothing less from one of our chief enablers!

Thanks, Bill! Nomadland was interesting, but definitely not an easy read.

Wow, not a chief enabler.... *sigh* LOL

I still need to start the Rivers of London. I think that would be a perfect fall read.

I definitely have to read Golem/Jinni before reading the next book. It was so melancholy though, so maybe I should read in Spring??

Ioana | 2083 comments Great update, you rock Patricia!

I'm with you on Dresden, but I hated the narrator, so I don't know if reading the book would make me like that series more. I gave up after the 2nd book, I could not take his whining anymore.

Nomadland is on my TBR too, glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Happy February!

Thanks, Ioana! I guess you can't like everything & when it comes to a series read, I have plenty of those to keep me busy!
Happy Reading!

Patricia | 1069 comments February update: Completed 12 books including 2 audio and 1 nonfiction.

On audio, I listened to The Stranger Diaries. This was a reread for me. I listened to the audio because my library mystery book group read it for February. Clare Cassidy is an English teacher and she teaches the short story "The Stranger" every year and is also working on a biography of the author. When a friend and fellow teacher is murdered and a note left at the scene with a quote from the story, Clare quickly learns that truth can be stranger than fiction.--Everyone in our group loved this one. I've read 10 or 11 of Griffiths' Ruth Galloway series and the first in another. I've never been disappointed in one of her books.

My second audio book was not as enjoyable for me though very short. The Aunt Who Wouldn't Die. Takes place in India. A new bride discovers her husband's aunt dead, but the aunt continues to haunt her through the years.

My nonfiction read was Why We Swim. I enjoy swimming and find it an exercise I can stick with. Tsui explores the history of swimming in different cultures and what it means to people all over.

The Cat Who Saved Books is Japanese (translated by Louise Heal Kawai), magical realism, and a book about a book store. A boy in high school, Rintaro, loses his grandfather who raised him and owned a bookstore. Known as a hikikomori (the Japanese have such great words), one who avoids social contact, Rintaro is surprised when two friends from school begin coming to the bookstore to check up on him. He's even more surprised when a talking cat shows up to tell him he needs his help to save some books. A charming book about friendship, books, and coming of age.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret is an illustrated, middle grade book about a boy who lives in secret in a train station and keeps the clocks running.

The Henna Artist Also read for a book group. Historical fiction; India. My group was a bit mixed on this. Some really liked it but others less enamored. I liked the way she ended it; how the characters grew and worked things out and appreciated learning about a different culture, but overall wasn't impressed with the characters and their decisions.

The Jane Austen Society. Historical fiction. A group of people who live in a small town in England after WW1 discover they all have a love of reading Jane Austen. They come from varied backgrounds--a farmer, a widowed school teacher, a doctor, and a lawyer. Since they live in the town where Austen spent much of her time, they decided to raise money to make museum in her honor. Great story about friendship and reading.

To be continued.

Looks like it was a good month Pat. The book on swimming sounds interesting and I have added it to my TBR.

Patricia | 1069 comments Continued: Trouble In The Town Hall (Dorothy Martin #2), cozy mystery. Dorothy is an American widow who moved to England after the death of her husband. When she and another woman discover a dead body in the town hall, she can't help but get involved in spite of many warnings, particularly from the chief constable who has become a very special friend to her.

Inkspell is the second in a young adult fantasy series, translated from the German. I enjoyed this, though I think I like the first Inkheart better. Both tell of a bookbinder and his daughter who are able to read characters out of books, then find themselves read into a book themselves.

On What Grounds Coffee House Mystery #1. Set in New York. An okay cozy mystery.

Hamnet Winner of the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2020. I've read two books by O'Farrell and loved them both, so plan to read more soon. This one is based on the life of William Shakespeare and his family. Shakespeare had twins, Judith and Hamnet. We know Hamnet died when he was 12 but little else. The rest comes from O'Farrell's vivid imagination.

This Time Next Year. Quinn and Minnie are born on New Year's Day, one minute apart. Though their mothers met during their time of labor, they never saw each other again. On Quinn and Minnie's thirtieth birthdays, they meet in a random and strange way. Minnie thinks Quinn has led a charmed life while hers has been cursed with bad luck, but looks can be deceiving. A fun book.

Lea (leaspot) | 3488 comments 12 books in such a short month is amazing. Looks like some very interesting books too. I had some of the same thoughts regarding some of the characters in The Henna Artist. Some decisions that were made certainly made me want to throw the book against the wall, but I agree about the ending. I did read the sequel and had some thoughts on that as well. It looks like this will be a trilogy.

Yes, it must have been a great book for your book club. I'm thinking Hidden Valley Road will be also.

I liked the Inkworld series very much although I preferred the first, I think. You do need to read the final book to get the final resolution. Have you seen the movie based on the first book? It's excellent.
