Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am going to kill the Kane Chronicles trilogy yet! I had to renew the hc book and I am only about 35% done.

I am 50% done with Jane Hawk #3.

I have the second book for the Impossible Time series in audiobook ready to listen to, after I finish a few others that I downloaded. On hold.

Whew - February really flew by at the end of the month.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I slowed down on Jane Hawk. I keep getting heard burn from the stress.

I am half way through the Kane Chronicles book. For some reason I did not think it was going to be so long. I am jus at 50%. All of the "facts"/"statements" about all of the Egyptian gods that the author throws in are fascinating, but I cannot tell if they are made up or what. He has quite the imagination, even if I am not the target audience for this trilogy.

I have been re-listening to some of the Barker & Llewelyn series books while waiting for the latest in the series to be available. I love the narrator's voice for the characters.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am still on the edge of my chair with Jane Hawk. Good thing I have the Kane’s to switch back to when I need to breathe. Their story is wrapping up though. The earth may be seeing its last sunrise unless they can defeat Apophis. 85 pages to go...

I started listening to A Gathering of Shadows - Shades of Magic, book two. I’m disappointed. They changed narrators. I don’t know if the female is the same one but the male is definitely not the same guy that narrated the first book. The first guy had “voices for the characters. The new guy is just reading.

message 54: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments I hate it when they switch narrators.

message 55: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4470 comments I read that whole series and really liked it. I still haven't bought something to listen to audiobooks on. I keep finding something wrong with the players I look at. I'll get something one of these days.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finally finished reading the much too long third book in the Kane Chronicles, The Serpent's Shadow last night.
This series was at the top of my long list of series to finish. And, it is done. I am declaring the Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan killed, March 12th.

I think I picked up this series, although it is aimed at middle teens, after I started reading the Amelia Peabody series. I chose The Red Pyramid for a challenge task, although I do not remember which challenge. I think I needed a fire on the cover. It was a novel way to expose the names and lore of the mostly long forgotten Egyptian gods to kids. I wish Sadie and Carter Kane well. ;o)

message 57: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I have been listening to A Gathering of Shadows in audiobook. I think I really need to read this series. I am not thrilled with the new male narrator vs. the one in the first book. Honestly - I keep falling asleep. I think I am going to send it back to the library and try the ebook.

I am at 92% in the Jane Hawk book. I need to finish it - it is going to expire soon.

message 58: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Crooked Staircase. Got my 5 stars.
The ebook ended at 94%, where the preview for the next book, The Forbidden Door started.

Woohoo! I liked it a lot too.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Re Shades of Magic:
I put the ebook of A Gathering of Shadows on hold at my library.
I checked out the names of the narrators and found #1 A Darker Shade of Magic was narrated by Steven Crossley. #2 A Gathering of Shadows by Michael Kramer, and #3 A Conjuring of Light by Kate Reading.
I like her, so I may listen to the third book in audio - when I get to it. I am in no rush.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My library seems to have purchased many of the audiobook versions of Robert B. Parker's Jessie Stone series, written by several other authors that the Parker family authorized. I have listened to all nine of the original stories written by Parker himself, but I was never interested in the ones written by others, until now. They were available, and while I was waiting for the other books that I have on hold to arrive, I decided to download a few of them. There are ten books, and I am currently listening to the sixth one. I have not waited for them to be in order. I am currently listening to Robert B. Parker's Fool's Paradise.

message 62: by Cherie (last edited Mar 24, 2022 07:44PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to Robert B. Parker's Fool's Paradise and Robert B. Parker's Debt to Pay. I am currently listening to Robert B. Parker's The Hangman's Sonnet.

I have one more ready to listen to , and one on hold from my library.
There seems to be one missing, but my library does not seem to have it in audiobook format. ;o(

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am currently listening to Nora Kelly #2, The Scorpion's Tail. I added the series to my list, since I am now reading book three /of four, since GR counted Thunderhead as book 0. I have been using the old "series challenge" rules for my series and only adding them to my list if there are three or more books in the series.

message 65: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59014 comments How do you find the narrator of the Nora Kelly series (not Thunderhead since it was recorded by Scott Brick)? I listened to the sample of Book 1 and decided I couldn't do it so have been reading the series in ebook format.

message 66: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - the narrator (Cynthia Farrell) of The Scorpion’s Tail was ok, not great. She was fine for the women’s voices - the men, not so much. She was easy to hear and I think you could speed her up. I finished the story this afternoon. I gave it 4 stars but should probably be 3.5. There was an interesting twist at the end. The Corrie/Nora collaboration seems to be a theme. Take note of the dedication. 😊

I put a hold on the next one but the wait list is long (I am #42 on 6 copies).

message 67: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59014 comments I think you're right about the Corrie/Nora connection.

I never noticed that the dedication was to William Smithback, Jr. Interesting!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I started reading the first Walt Longmire series book, The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson. I have owned the book for many years.

Walt is the sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming. Forty-one pages later and I know that he doesn’t eat donuts, his wife died, he has a daughter that is a lawyer in Philadelphia. He is “a sheriff who had survived by the cult of personality... I like him.

message 69: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My library has been adding a slew of audiobooks lately and I found the Blue-Eyed Devil and downloaded it. This was the fourth book in the original series written by Robert B. Parker.

It seems that there are more available, so I will probably listen to them too, when they become available. They are listed as "Robert B. Parker's xxx, like the Jessie Stone books, written by other authors.

message 70: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to Blue-eyed Devil this evening. That will wrap my 4 book original series of Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch.

I also finished reading The Cold Dish, Walt Longmire #1 for my yearly challenge. I loved it! I totally enjoyed the author’s humor and his excellent story. I seem to be a sucker for these older, single guys be they detectives, policemen, sheriffs or private investigative folks. I added all of the book titles to my series spreadsheet and purchased Death Without Company, which is book #2

message 71: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Now, I am starting The Cove by Catherine Coulter. This is book #1 in her series called, FBI Thrillers. Next, I will also be reading book #25 in the same series for my yearly challenge.

message 72: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments I started that series and stopped at book 3 and have been wanting to get back to it. If you plan on reading the series let me know. I have a lot of the physical books in the series.

message 73: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hey Jannene - I am really enjoying The Cove. I thought it was a lot strange at first, but it has been very exciting and quite surprising at times too. James is playing his sax in Miss Lillie’s club, where I am at now. I am calling it an early evening and going to bed. I can’t keep my eyes open any longer. I think my library has all of the books, so yes, at this point, It looks like I will be reading the next ones in the series. I just have to order them up. 🤓

My library has Jane Hawk #4 available and I can download it now, if I want. Let me know and I will start it with you. 😉

Jannene | 3124 comments I’ll check in with Dom. We just started our chunky book, Kingdom of Ash which is the last in the series. I’ll post back.

We plan on it after our chunky book. To quote the TV show Survivor ‘The tribe has spoken.

Probably plan on around two weeks out.

message 76: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Cove. There were a few times where I had to roll my eyes and it may have been a little longer than it should have been, but I am giving the series a chance.

message 77: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am currently listening to Robert B. Parker's Ironhorse. This is the first book in the Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch series written by Robert Knott. There are 6 books written by him. The audiobook is narrated by Titus Welliver and it is excellent! I think I may have to add this to my list. I hope my library has more.

message 78: by Cherie (last edited Apr 06, 2022 06:12PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I was just going to start the second Walt Longmire book, Death Without Company, when my library hold on the last Robert B. Parker's Jessie Stone book became available, so I downloaded it. Robert B. Parker's Fool Me Twice is the only one my library did not own in audiobook format. I put the CD set and the ebook on hold and it is the ebook that showed up first. This will be the tenth and last book in the series that I have enjoyed in the last three weeks.

I finished the 25th book in the FBI Thriller series in record time, partly because I was able to download the audiobook and the ebook at the same time. What a difference writing 24 more books made in the series. Vortex was great. I am almost afraid to go back to the beginning of the series now.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I didn’t want to loose this so I‘m posting it here.
A book mentioned in another book:
Coming of Age in Samoa by Margaret Mead is mentioned in Robert B. Parker’s Fool Me Twice by Michael Brandman

message 80: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4470 comments Oh my that brings back memories. I read Coming of Age in Samoa: A Psychological Study of Primitive Youth for Western Civilisation for an anthropology course in college “a few years ago.

I read the reviews and checked with my library. The book is available, so I may read it. ;o)

message 82: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished the 10th book in the Robert B. Parker’s Jessie Stone series, so I am declaring it killed.

message 83: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Yay!

message 84: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished reading the second Walt Longmire book and have the third on hold now. I really like him!

I am listening to the #8th book in the Robert B. Parker Virgil Cole & Everett Hitch series. Robert B. Parker's Blackjack - I think I need a score card, there are so many characters.

message 85: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished the first Veronica Speedwell series book, A Curious Beginning for the monthly challenge. I liked her. She is going on my list. ;o)

message 86: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Blackjack. It was long and seemed to wander. Only 3 stars. I think there are two books left to finish the series.

I started the 12th Barker & Llewelyn book in audio. A Dance with Death is set in London 1893. England’s Prince George is getting married and the heir to the Russian Throne’s life is in danger. This an orphan read for me. I killed the series several books ago.

message 87: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Cherie you ready for Jane?

message 88: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sorry, Jannene. I am starting Jane Hawk right now. I had planned to start the other day but my on hold Walt Longmire book became available.

I just finished book #3. I loved it! My granddaughter and I finally finished bing-watching the complete TV series on Netflix on Sunday. Now, we can complete the Stargate Universe series on CD from my library. 🤣

message 89: by Cherie (last edited Apr 26, 2022 12:06PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury is mentioned. In The Forbidden Door (Jane Hawk #4).

Cornell is reading it to Travis. “It’s Magic.

message 90: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am 63% done with The Forbidden Door.
This one has been quite different than the previous three. I am relieved. The others were just action scene after action scene. This one has some VERY unique characters and plot scenes.

message 91: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I tried listening to old George Guidell (so> narrate Another Man’s Moccasins but between the flash backs to Vietnam and his voices for Walt being gravely and lows I gave up and downloaded the ebook. It was a fine story but I am enjoying The Dark Horse better. I really enjoy the author’s subtle humor and his characters. I want to steel away and be a fly on the wall as he goes about his day. His descriptions of the country and references to places are wonderfully soothing. I have never met anyone with bakers chocolate eyes but I realky like Juana and her son Benjamin.

message 92: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am listening to Walt Longmire #8 and I have the ebook as back up.

Jane Hawk #4 expired from my tablet before I finished her and I just got her back from the library today.

message 93: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Jane Hawk #4 is still hanging out waiting to be finished but I can’t leave off on Walt Longmire. I am reading book #12, An Obvious Fact.

I started listening to Diablo Mesa (Nora Kelly #3) this morning after I received the notice from my library that it was available.

message 94: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Man oh man, Walt must be enticing.

message 95: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments He really IS, Jannene!
I finished Depth of Winter and listened to his novella, The Highwayman, into the wee hours.

For the first time, the next book for Walt is not available so I finally got back to Jane Hawk. Then, I found out that there were only three short chapters left! The six percent left in the book was for the preview of the next story. ☹️
I hate that about the ePub format that I choose to read but it works best on my old tablet.

While I wait for Walt, I am going to finish People of the Book and maybe pick up Travels With Mysrlf and One Other.

message 96: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I I finished all of the Walt Longmire books and all of the novellas and short stories. My library had them all! Next book due in September.

My granddaughter and I are listening to the last Pastoral Protectorate book, TImeless.

Did you watch the tv series? If so, did the tv series stay close to the books?

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice wrote: "Did you watch the tv series? If so, did the tv series stay close to the books?..."

Did you mean the Walt Longmire stuff, Janice? If yes, then I can say that we binge watched the TV series after I finished the first book and while I was reading/listening to the second. I think the TV series stories were much more dramatized regarding the activities on the Indian Reservation. The characters were pretty true to the books. The first season stories for the TV series were a combination of several events from the first few books.
Personally, I liked the books and characters better and really enjoyed the George Guidell narrations, except for the last book. The audio editing was terrible. Craig Johnson writes great dialogue the humor is subtle and funny. The greatest thing is the amount of history/facts and information he puts into the stories and I love the Cherokee language included. I spend/spent a lot of time looking things up, and listening to songs. I read and listened to all of the books - more than once.

Janice (jamasc) | 59014 comments Yes, Walt Longmire. I read the first book a long time ago, but I've watched the entire series. Someday I would like to read the series as well, but I have lots of other series to concentrate. I have too many on the go.

I know what you mean, Janice. I hope you enjoy them, if you get a chance to read any more.

I guess I caught it at just the right time. All of the books were available from my library, and I was able to get the next one, right after finishing, without any long wait times.
Now, they seem to all have holds and 3 or 4 week wait times. I will be chewing my fingernails until #18 is published in September.
