Andrea | 2 comments I read this book in the late 90s/early 2000s. It was possibly a YA. It was fantasy (I'm pretty sure!), but probably based on U.S. history of Native American forced displacement.

I think the male main character was named Gabriel. He died in the camp (of sickness that was spreading among tribesmen?) and his wife (who wasn't born in his tribe but had met him and joined his tribe) was pregnant. She had lived in a city and had to learn his way of life when she moved out of the city to the tribe.

Reading reviews for the sequel, Time of the Eagle, it does seem as though Gabriel dies in the first book, leaving behind a pregnant wife.

I think that's it! I just had it backwards that the woman joined the man's tribe. I'll read it to make sure, but I'm almost 100% that's it. Thank you!
