UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Oooooh... this is rough.

1. Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward I LOVE the intensity of the Brothers. They are so tormented. Makes me want to take them home and kiss them all better.

2. The Darkyn Series by Lynn Viehl
More tormented, misunderstood Vampires. I love Michael.

3. The Maker's Song series by Adrian Phoenix. What can I say? Dante Baptiste is hhhhhhhhhot.

4. Midnight Breeds by Lara Adrian. Another race of Vampires struggling for survival.

5. The Carpathians by Christine Feehan . The series was getting a bit old, but the last few books have really put the women in the forefront of the story.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish ~♡Katie♡~ wrote: ": ) are the rest just as good as the first?"

Better, I think. I feel like the first book in any series can be a little slower because the author has to set up the world, the characters, the storyline etc. Now you have all that so there will be more meat on the bones, so to speak, of the stories and characters. More time to devote to them. Make sense?

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish All of the BDB books were 5 stars. There were some I liked better than others, sure, but they were all 5 stars.

message 13: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) EVERYBODY I know on here has been talking about these books. I feel like I am missing out, because I haven't read them. Grrr...

message 14: by Mahyar (new)

Mahyar (themaninthegrayflannelsuit) | 18 comments Twilight Saga and The Vampire Diaries are only Vampire series I've ever read, so I will go with "Twilight".

message 15: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (ontariogal) | 47 comments So far I've only read Twilight, which I liked. I've seen the first two seasons of True Blood so I don't think I want to read the sookie series, since I started the first book (someone lent it to me) and it seemed an awful lot like the show. Does that change much? Is it worth reading if you've seen the show?

The thread gives me some great ideas though! I also got the first 6 House of Night books for Christmas, and am looking forward to getting into those when I get tired of my other TBR books. I'm really looking forward to them seeing that a lot of people have them on their list, and up close to the top. I will have to check out the Vampire Diaries too, and I had not heard of BDB books, but I am intrigued!!

The Sookie Stackhouse novels are like the show in the beginning but they do have small and large differences in each. Some characters are portrayed differently in the show or stick around longer, and some of the plot was changed for the show as well so you won't be reading an exact copy of the show. Plus once you get past the first two you'll be ahead of the tv series, lol.

My ratings have changed for my choices, lol. They now stand at
1.Vampire Chronicles - Anne Rice
2.Sookie Stackhouse Novels - Charlaine Harris
3.Black Dagger Brotherhood - J.R.
4.Vampire the Masquerade novels - Multiple authors
5.Anita Blake series - Laurell K. Hamilton

Nona (goodreadscomnona) | 102 comments I agree Michelle, nobody can top the complexity and selfishly emprowing vampires like Anne Rice. My second would be J R Ward's BDB only because they are warrior with weakness' of men. So far those are only the series I would re-read or recommend I've read Sookie, a few Anita Blake and The House of Night and thought they all fell short but I do demand alot from my vampires. I need an author like Rice or ward who goes into depth, about everything otherwise I lose interest quickly.

I agree, I really like vampires to have true personalities that really stick out and are unique. I would probably rank Ward's series higher but I've only read one as apposed to the 6 Stackhouse books I've read. The Anita Blake series is kind of a boring series to me on some aspects but I haven't read alot of series (more stand alones)so it makes the top 5 because Twlight is 6,lol.

message 19: by Nona (new)

Nona (goodreadscomnona) | 102 comments the first book of BDB about Wrath was ok but the rest far out shine his story. I have to read the last one of the series but I loved Rhage and Zadists story the most, I'm a sucker when it come to men that need 'fixed' and they turely needed it. Oh yeah I did read Twilight but I think of that not as a vampire story for some reason, more like super human or something but vampire in my opinion they are not. Vampires are the blood sucking monsters under the illusion od humnsa to better stalk their pray in most cases so a sparkling 'veggie' day time walking vampire doesn't cut it with me.

message 20: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I personally despise the Twilight series...I agree with that as well, they don't come off as vampires at all. In fact if it wasn't for some one saying the word vampire in the book you wouldn't even know...but then again the whole "I'm a highschool girl who is sad and needs a brooding boyfriend" routine doesn't really seem to have that much depth involved.
I've heard that Rhage and Zadist's were the best ones, but I haven't been able to get around to going to the store to buy the rest of the series. I've also been trying to find more vampire series of quality to read.

message 21: by Nona (new)

Nona (goodreadscomnona) | 102 comments I bought my series off amazon for very little, at B&N the box set is $50 I think I have $25 wrapped up in all 7 of them shipped to my door and in good condition. Yes their story is so far a favorite, I have thought about reading the Blue Blood books but still am stand offish when it comes to high school/Vampire romance books.

message 22: by gazing_where (new)

gazing_where | 7 comments I am completely hooked on the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Once you get through the first few chapter of the first book its like an addiction. They are really fun and easy reads. I usually finnish one in a day if I read off and on for an hour or two.

message 23: by Jackie M (new)

Jackie M | 452 comments There are couple of new to me series that I have come to love Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires and Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress and Night Huntress World.

message 24: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) I am not a big series fan, and I am also more of a werewolf fan, but here goes... >_>

1. The Last Vampire series by Christopher Pike (The Last Vampire in particular)

2. Vampire series by Shannon Drake (Deep Midnight if I had to pick)

3. Darkhunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon (Night Embrace or Dance With The Devil in particular)

4. The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward (Lover Eternaland Lover Unbound especially)

5. Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton (pre-orgy part only, Obsidian Butterfly is my favorite)

6. Companions of the Night(The first vampire romance book I ever read and loved, if I remember correctly)

7. The Historian (it was work but it was worth it, imo)

8. Dracula (It's Dracula, I mean come on!)

9. Sunshine (Just read it recently, and it was much better than I expected)

10. Yeah... I got nothin'. lol

message 25: by Ida Suyanto (new)

message 28: by Aparajitabasu (new)

Aparajitabasu | 16 comments at first it was Twilight saga and then Vampire academy series but now it has become

1. Vampire Academy series
2. Twilight saga
3. Vampire diaries
4. House of night(the series lost its spark after book 4 for me)

message 29: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jengray72) | 7 comments Good vampire stories, and completely hilarious: Christopher Moore's Bloodsucking Fiends, You Suck, and Bite Me. I've read the first two; last one on my TBR list. These are not romantic and glamorous--they are down and dirty and laugh out loud funny. Loved them!

message 30: by sonya (new)

sonya marie madden | 441 comments Anne Rice is still the classic vampire author for me.

message 31: by Peter (new)

Peter (goodreadscompetermeredith) | 22 comments I thought vampire were suppose to be evil...not conflicted. My two cents...Barlow from Salem's lot was the best. Just the right amount of cultured evil to hide his craving for blood.

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 375 comments Years ago, I read most of the Saint-Germain vampire series by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro and thoroughly enjoyed them. Le Comte de Saint-Germain is a very aristocratic and gentlemanly vampire. The series is also rich in history as Saint-Germain travels throughout the world into different time periods and cultures.

My second favourite vampire book would have to be Stephen King's "Salem's Lot". That was my first introduction to King and hooked me into reading more of his books.

I really want to read that series. I have heard nothing but good things about it.

message 34: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 375 comments Hey, Jackie, I think you would enjoy it. It's been awhile since I read a book in the Saint-Germain series, but I do recall being quite fascinated by the idea of a "good" vampire, who didn't use his condition to terrorize and kill people for blood sport. And, if you like historical fiction, you can learn a great deal about different societies and cultures throughout the ages.

message 35: by Cammie (new)

Cammie I'm loving the Night Huntress Series and I'm waiting on reading books 4 and 5 until the release of book 6 gets closer.

message 36: by Malina (new)

Malina (miss_mali) | 31 comments Twilight is the only vampire series read sooo I think that wins by default. But I did like the series i read it twice. And out of the series my favorite book was Twilight but I also really liked New Moon too.

message 37: by Cammie (new)

Cammie I thought Twilight was pretty good but I still have to read the rest of the series but I'm in no rush. I saw New Moon and thought it was really funny. Was the book as funny as the movie?

message 38: by sonya (new)

sonya marie madden | 441 comments not through the whole series yet. New Moon was a great movie, but books always seem to be better. Coincidence?

How does the Vampire Diaries book compare to the show? I know probably way better but like how far off did the show go? I am a die hard for that show. Watch it every week.. I know kinda sad.. But I must say the guys that they got to play the Salvator brothers are very nice to watch haha.

The basics are the same. However, there are a few differences. They completely removed Meredith (another friend of Elena's) from the show. Tyler is not even remotely likable in the books. The plots are a lot more straight forward. I only like the first 4 books in the book series. I started reading them when I was 13 years old, when they first came out.

message 42: by Dalia (new)

Dalia I am really suprised the Sergei Lukyanenko series of Vampire/Magician books have not been mentioned before- I just finished the third book in the series and I liked it even better than the first two... Night Watch Day Watch Twilight Watch

message 43: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 344 comments Easily the best Vampyre book ever written is Dracula. Braum Stoker heavily researched the vampire lore of eastern Europe. He also read the vampire treatease written by the French Monk Augustine Calmet. In which he records vampire cases studied by the Austrian government in 1650. He researched Prince Dracula, and other Romanian folk lore. Like the Scholomance which was a school of the dark arts run by the devil himself and located on the shores of a Sytrian lake. This is what makes Dracula such a great vampire and such a great book. The devil had taught Prnice Drucul how to resurect himself after death. Since only God has the right to do this Dracul was excomunicated & turned into a vampire. He was also a witch & shapeshifter capalbe of conrolling the weather, levatation, mind reading. He had the strength of 20 men. This is all realated in the book by Professor Van Helsing. Dracula was no ordianry vampire. He was the king of his kind. Stoker had also read Carmilla wirtten 20 years previous, and set in Styria. He did not want to copy Carmilla so he used the name given in the writings of Calmet, Transylvania. If you have not read Dracula do so. What I like best is it is a stand alone book, and a timeless classic.

Terry Simpson | 13 comments Necroscope. I have yet to find nay vampire books that thrilled me as much as the Necroscope series.

message 45: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 344 comments Hey Terry can you elaborate on Necroscope? I have never heard of it before. So I am curious. What did you like most about it? I like Sookie Stackhouse and Cirque du Freak as far as series. I have not been able to find another series I could get into.

message 46: by Terry (new)

Terry Simpson | 13 comments Nothing I say below is a spoiler.

Cary, it's an old series first out in 1986. The first book is maybe 15% about vampires as it has to build to that point. That's just one of the things I loved. The world building was superb. ESPionage (Soviet vs English), vampires, necromancy and beyond with the ability to speak to, befriend and learn from the dead, possession of a sort, psychics, teleportation, mixes of myths and lore to make it all believable with enthralling back stories mixed in that will make you love or hate the characters appropriately, writing to build tension to match its blood and gore. I could continue to wax poetic.

The one thing about reading Necroscope even today after reading so many that have walked the same path over the years is the it was original. If you do read it, you'll see plenty that you may say, hey such and such an author did that with his or her vampires or undead or zombies or whatever, and I think that's what makes me love it so. To me, Lumley blazed a path with Necroscope as Bram Stoker did with Dracula, (another favorite of mine).

message 47: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 344 comments Wow Terry thanks for hipping me to Necroscope. It does sound original, and not just another vampire romance series. For me it's important to have some backstory or mythos that supports ,and makes credible the story being told. Giving it some depth, and creating a world in which the story seems more believable. Your despription of Necroscope really has made me want to read it. Very nice of you for taking the time to elaborate on the books content. :)

message 48: by Jojobean (new)

Jojobean My favorite books are the Vampire diaries hands down.
I also like the vampire academy books and the cirque du freak books. I like twilight also.

message 49: by Cary (last edited Mar 25, 2012 08:49AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 344 comments I'll say it again Carmilla, and Dracula are my favorites hands down. They do everything vampires are supposed to do, and conform to the traditional folk lore. As far a modern series vamps. Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mysteries, and Darren Shaun Cirque du Freak/ Vampires Aprentice.

message 50: by Fauuzzie (new)

Fauuzzie (faize) Cirque du Freak was good. One of my favorite vampire books is Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith.
