[2023] Poll 8 Suggestions

This would be a book about theater, film, fine art, dance, opera, music, literary publishing, television, or radio.

I didn’t post on the wild discussion because I just thought of it. 😅 But I’m open to rewording to make it more clear. I thought it would be a list prompt that might help us clear a book from our TBR.

I will second this one.

It could be during a war, climate disaster, by zombies, terrorists or during a prison sentence.

Twelve Years a Slave
Kalakuta Republic
Allison Hewitt Is Trapped
Robinson Crusoe

I'll second this one

This could be about religion, struggle with faith, religious study, or a character named Faith, faith in someone you trust, a faithful dog!, a character with a spiritual profession (monk, nun, priest, etc), etc, etc

A book with one of the 7 most used verbs in English in the title: be, have, do, say, get, make, go.

I’ll second this one

Something like:
A book about a character who is imprisoned or by an author who was threatened or imprisoned due to their work
Jill wrote: "I will second Imprisonment - a story where someone is captured, taken hostage, trapped or imprisoned"
That was seconded by T. in Msg 8, so Jill, you can suggest or second something else.

It makes sense (why is prison on people's minds?) but it would be hard to condense for voting

The author part of this was because of the news today that Salman Rushdie was stabbed and is in the hospital.

Yes, I was thinking of that too.

Prompts about books and the written word are common, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen this idea in a challenge. There are lots of popular nonfiction and novels with this theme Project Hail Mary is a recent popular example. I think this could include oral tradition, spells, etc. I did find a few listopias to help folks get the idea:

Louise, are you open to adding something about the author being imprisoned/endangered or do you feel that's a different topic?

Did you link to the correct list? These are not about language, linguistics or the spoken word at all. They're lists of subjective best books, and worst books.

Shannon, could we just say "A book that was translated"? Can we assume it means from another language?

Yikes, I'll see if I missed something or just the number!
The number just got stuck on the previous line, I fixed that.
I show we have 8 down, 7 to go.

Juliet are you aware of who the authors are, besides Salman Rushdie, who have been threatened or imprisoned? This might be interesting, but I wouldn't want to be limited to just Rushdie.
Edit: I just found the following list, but I'm not familiar with any of the authors, so I don't know yet how available their work might be:
As far as threatened or imprisoned - There are Russian authors like Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn or Boris Pasternak. I'm sure there are many in Afghanistan, China and other places that we don't know about. You also have writers who have gone into exile, like Isabel Allende. There must be a list somewhere. For the average person, it could be a bit daunting to find these.

Thanks Robin, these are at least two i have heard of.

Just a reminder that you can find a full list of prompts already on the 2023 list in the third post on this thread
A little reminder of how things are done around here:
How it works:
- The topics for the 2023 reading challenge list will be determined by a series of mini-polls, the number of which depends on the number of prompts winning in each mini-polls
- Suggestions for each poll will be opened until 15 suggestions are received and “seconded.
- The voting thread will open the day after suggestions go live. You can find the schedule here.
- The poll will be posted after the voting thread is opened for 24 hours, and will remain open for three full days.
- Each user has 8 votes to spread between their favorite (top) and least favorite (bottom) prompts
- The prompts with the more favorable votes (comparing top votes to bottom votes, and looking at the overall number of votes it received) will be added to the final list (between 2 and 5 depending on how the votes are spread)
Rules:
- Each member can only suggest OR second one prompt
- Suggestions close after 15 total seconded prompts
When suggesting and seconding, feel free to provide examples and descriptions that may help other members understand the prompt better. These descriptions and examples will be copied over to the voting thread for further discussion.
As always, please express any and all feedback (respectfully, of course), either here or in The Wild Discussion.
