Barbara Just finished with - and maybe this belongs in the "how soon do you give up on a book" topic - a legal thriller called "Once A Liar." The book is told in alternating narratives of the main character, a cutthroat lawyer, the "Then" that tells about his rise to the top of his profession and the "Now" that deals with his present crisis.
I got maybe 80 pages in. From the jacket I knew he was going to be accused of murdering an ex lover, the daughter of his arch rival DA. The beginning goes slowly through backstory, the death of his ex wife and he and his present wife taking custody of his teenage son by the late ex. Back and forth, back and forth and so slowly that I figured out the whodunit and pretty much the whydunit and there was nothing about the book that made me want to invest more time in seeing how the author got there.

Thomas (tom471) | 1250 comments I read The Lipstick Bureau by Michelle Gable It is a pleasant historical fiction book set in WWII Rome. The OSS has an office of Morale Operations, tasked with distributing black propaganda in occupied Europe. This book is loosely based on a real person who worked in that office.
